Introduction to Rhetoric
- Rhetoric is a tool that enhances composition (writing)
- It consists of different rhetorical devices used cohesively to: persuade, inform, express, or entertain
Diction
An author’s choice of words. These words are carefully chosen to enhance the writing and produce an effect on the reader.
Tone
The attitude an author has toward his/her subject.
The tone of a piece is determined by an author’s diction.
Citizenship in a Republic
Read “Citizenship in a Republic” by Theodore Roosevelt. Circle any unique diction you find or diction you feel might lend itself to indicate tone.
Take notes/write down your thoughts when you feel necessary
