Two useful models used during Intro to Management & Leadership (there are more)

Who we are is how we manage and lead. We explore personality types and traits and define what our natural and most comfortable way of being is and how this impacts on those around us. This is definitely an eye opener for most people and it helps managers to understand that their team is often not like they are. So, we look at strategies at how to get the best from their teams by understanding the personality type of their team. This is definitely not about labelling people and there are definitely no excuses to who we are. We are all able to adapt and demonstrate different behaviours but we tend to revert to ‘type’ under stress and when we are not consciously aware of what we are doing or how we are doing it.

Constructive feedback is one of the hardest things to get right. We often allow our opinions and judgements to get in the way of what we really want to say. The clue that poorly worded feedback has been given is often the response you get and this SARA model demonstrates perfectly the responses and reactions. What we are aiming to do when giving feedback is for the individual to listen and come up with their own realization that something could have been done in a different way to get a better outcome. If we adopt a coaching approach by asking the individual what they think they can do differently, you are likely to get a more positive response with the individual accepting with commitment to an action. This places the responsibility with the individual and builds a more trusting relationship.

Introduction to Management and Leadership FAQ

Who can attend? – New managers who have responsibility for a team of people. Or experienced managers with no formal management or

leadership accreditation and see this course as a refresher and the chance to gain an accreditation. This course is not suitable for aspiring managers.

Is there an Accreditation with this programme?

– Yes, for a small additional fee you can become registered with The Institute of Leadership and Management and you will receive an Endorsed Certificate giving you free studying membership for six months and access to The Institute’s on-line learning resources.

How much theory is there?– A little and any theory is practical and logical. The emphasis is on understanding enough of the theory to gain context

and understanding with a focus on the practical application within your management role.

How long is the course?– 8 x 3 hour virtual and video modules. We recommend modules are delivered 4 weeks apart with practical tasks being

assigned to you between each training module.

Will there be role play?– No. But there will be skills practice managed in the best way possible using ‘break-out’ rooms with time allocated for

these sessions to happen.

What do I need to access the course? – We recommend that you use a desktop or laptop so that the zoom technology is used in the most effective way. Your

participation is often hampered using ipads, tablets and phones. Using a desktop computer or static laptop means the camera is likely to be in the right place for you to see everyone and everyone to see you during the session.

Do I have to have the video on?– Yes please. This course is all about connecting with others and this is best done using video technology.
