Introduction

• ‘Have you ever played video games before? Look at the joystick movement. When you move the joystick to the left, the plane on the TV screen move to the left too. The same thing happens when the joystick is moved to the right. The joystick controls the plane’s movement through its communication with the central processing unit in the game console.’

• A joystick is an example of an input device.

Input

• Do you know what input means?• Input is any data or instruction that you enter

into the memory of a computer.• There are 4 types of input: – text– graphic – Audio; and – video.

Input Devices

• Input devices are any electronic devices connected to a computer and produces input signals.

• Examples of input devices are keyboard, scanner, microphone, web cam and a mouse.

Page 17: Introduction ‘Have you ever played video games before? Look at the joystick movement. When you move the joystick to the left, the plane on the TV screen.

Introduction

• A speaker is an example of an output device. It produces sounds.

• The printer is another example of an output device. It produces outputs, whether graphics or text in print.

Page 18: Introduction ‘Have you ever played video games before? Look at the joystick movement. When you move the joystick to the left, the plane on the TV screen.

Output

• Output is the result of data processing activity when it is presented external to the system.

• The output from a computer can be in a form for use by people, for example, printed or displayed.

There are four types of output

Text-based Graphics-based

Audio-based Video-based

Output Devices

• An output device is hardware that is capable of delivering or showing information to one or more users.

• An output device shows, prints and presents the results of a computer’s work.

Types of Output Devices

• A display device is an output device that usually conveys text, graphics and video information.

• A printer is an output device that prints text and graphics on a physical medium such as paper or transparency film.

• An audio output device produces music, speech, or other sounds.

• Other output devices include Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) projectors and facsimile (fax) machines.
