Exeerp t; .:ÅÄ ",e "A'. STAFF: To begin with, we would like to ask what your school days were like. Looking back upon it, what comes first in your mind? Is there any differences between your school days and ours? Mr. Ishihara: Before answering your question, let me tell you the histori- cal background. In those days, Japan was restoring economically from the damage of World War II. In other words, we were in the transitional period from poverty to wealth. So we did not have much money but had enough time. I was living in a dormitory with cheerfu1 colleagues and everyday sVas like a "omatsuri"- drinking, singing, and come to think of it, they were something more like "Bankara (rough and couth) days" that I have lost for long. In my school days, I enjoyed everything I did. Therefore I have never envyed materialistically fulfilled youngsters. STAFF: Some people say students or young people nowadays Iack indi- viduality. What do you think ofthis opinion? Mr. Ishihara: Young people seem to be drowning in an overflow of informa- tion which also make them top- heavy. According to a recent medi- cal theory, man expresses his feelings or will by cerebrum, but receives them through the brainstem. So, stimulation of the brainstem is neces- sary to develop our personalities. I suppose young people lack the mental and physical training which stimulates the brajnstem. STAFF: What do you expect from young people? • Mr. Ishihara: The recent trend ofedu- cation directs to make the faultless man, the "strait A student'", but such a man would only suit the bureau- crat. Students should not aim to get an A average but strive to get a "Super A" in one subject. Japanese are good at improving the ideas brought about by another people, but lack the ability of creating self- reliant ones. For Japan to catch up with the Big Powers and to keep the top position in the world econemy, there is a desperate need for young people with unjque creativity. STAFF: What do you think of Rinkyo- sin (Provisional educational com- inittee of premier's private consulta- tive body)? Is there any differences between ibs ideas about education and yours? Mr. Ishihara: At present, one is praised for "getting in" to a university, but I would lilÅqe to see a change in which one is praised for being able to "get out". Students are here to stLtdy the subjects they want, but on the other hand professors should make any unqualified students stay a year more and should eliminate those who stay twice. If so, professors will probably objec.t that it would be too much burden from them, but they must not forget their duty as educators, looking after their students all through their school life. In other words, the ideal university is one is easy to enter but difficult to gradu- ate. STAFF: Lastly, would you give some advices to the freshmen who will be entering Keio Univ. tl}is Apri1? On Oct. 31st, last year, the PrimeMinister of Inida, Indira Gandhi, 66,was assassinated by two Sikhs. Sikhsdeclared the assassination as a revengeagainst Indira's attack upon Sikh'stemple in June. After the assassination ••India went through almost two monthsof bloody revellion. Many people wereinjured and many Sikh houses werecrushed. Indira's cabinet men hurriedthe succession of election, as opposing ,

candidate was Maneka, a widow ofIndira's second born son Sanjay. Theelection was held and Raji'v got thepost.

January 26th, 1985, Masahisa Take-naka, the head of the Yamaguchi-gumi(Japan's largest cnminal syndicate), was

shot with two of his subordmates mSuita, Osaka Prefecture. He died in thePohce Hospital in Tennoji Ward on the28th The others, Katsumasa Naka-yarna, Yamaguchi-gumi's No. 2 rnan and

Tsutomu Mmami. the boss of theMinami-gumi (an affiliate ofYamaguchi-gumi) were shot to death on the spot.Pohce arrested Shuichi Nagano as oneof the suspects on the shooting. He isthe leader of the Doshin-kai, a crimmalsyndicate affihated with the Ichiwa-kai,

which is m rivalry with the Yamaguchi-.qumi. Pokce interrogators who have

been questionmg Nagano have quotedhim as saying that his squad made plansto kil1 Takenaka about half a year agoand had been looking fora chance smcelate last year. Police belteved Ichiwa-kai

planned the attack because Yamaguchi-gumi had been sowing dicord amongits member gangs ever since the Yama-guchi-gumi and the Ichiwa-kai separatedfrom each other in June last year.

What is the reason the Ichiwa-kaihave come t6 attack the Yamaguchi-gumi's leader and his lieutenants?

Takenaka became the fourth boss ofthe Yamaguchi-gumi last June, when ithad already passed three years sinceKazuo Taoka (the third boss of theYamaguchi-gumi) died of illness in1981 Taoka is notable in the worldof "YAKUZA" because he syndicatedthe Japanese gangsters for the first time.

He defeated rival groups one afteranother and had gained affiliates.

He was mighty and even charismatic.The Yamaguchi-gumi united under hispower. In his late years his 1ieutenant

was Keniclu Yamamoto. Yamamotohad a violent temper. When Taokawas shot by a member of the Matsuda-gumi m Kyoto Prefecture m 1978,he violently took repnsals against themThis is the so-called '`the Osaka WarII" K Yamamoto expected to succeedTaoka, but he died of illness in Feb-ruaiy, 1982. The Yamaguchi-gumi un-fortunately lost its leader and hissuccessor in a brief period of a half year.

The syndicate's top executives had acollective leadership system as emer-gency measures to mamtain order. Onthe other hand, the police consideredthe situation as an opportunity todestroy crimmal syndicates Someexecutives were ariested as a part ofthe

campaign. That is one of the factswhich delayed the decision of whowouid be the fourth boss.

In June, l984, the Yamaguchi-gumisaw the third anniveisary of Taoka'sdeath. This worked as atrigger forcon-cludmg the successor issue. The widow,Fumiko Taoka, recommended Takenakaas the fourth boss in Kazuo Taokaiswill. Accordmg to one who is at homewith the Yakuza business, she nominat-ed Takenaka because his temper remind-ed her of Kemchi Yamamoto, whom shehad faith in. On the other hand, Hiroshi

Yamamoto, who had been an actmgthird boss m the collective leadershipsystem, was displeased at the con-clusion and Shigemasa Kamota, whowas the boss of the Kamota-gumi,was also displeased because he had been

on bad terms with Takenaka. Sorneexecutives sided with H. Yamamoto andKamota and the Ichiwa-kai was organiz-ed. The spht shows us the peculiaritythat gangsters should die fortheir boss

ln an emergency.

After the spht, conflict with eachother did not come out m the open.But the Yamaguchi-gumi had forcedaffiliates of the Ichiwa-kai to give up

and to be absorbed into them. Forexample, the Ihara-gumi (at Amagasaki),

an affi1iate of the Yamahiro-gumi, wasforced to give up m January, 1985.Ichiwa-kai had been forced into a tightcorner. This is said to be a trigger for

shootmg Takenaka. We can iegard theshootmg as the Ichiwa-kai's gamble.

For Miss KAREN ONDERKO, 20,this is her second time in Japan. Shelived in Japan from l972 to 1976 onaccount of her father's posting here.Karen came back to Japan iast Septern-ber from Georgetown University inWashington D.C. where she majors inJapanese and minors in InternationalEconomy. Currently, she studies Japa-nese at the International Center ofKEIO. `tThe people are the best part ofJapan;' says Karen with a smile. It isevident that she has a positive attitudetoward being in a foreign land. t`Myfriends (in the U.S.) told mg that Iwould get a culture shock and that Iwould be so tired from it. But I really

don't have any problems." Whether itis celebrating Seijinshiki (Coming of Age

Day) at Meiji Shrine, going to Kago-shima during spring vacation, or even

getting lost by stepping off the trainat the wrong station, Karen truly seemsto be enjoying her stay in Japan.

Karen's overall impression of KEIOis also a good one. She is pleased withthe Japanese classes, 1ikes the "nicely

condensed, cozy campus" in Mita,and enjoys the company of her newfriends. However, she does wish tomake more Japanese friends. "This(making friends) is a difficult thinganywhere. It is always so hard to go upto someone to introduce yourself." Karen feels that one of the factorswhich makes it slower to establishfriendship, is the lack of fraternity life

at KEIO. "Because e.veryone iives athome, there is less chance for studentsto be together. So you cannot developa sense of commonalty. Whereas in theUnited States everyone ljves on andare almost always on campus." She alsoadds, "Most classes are too large atKEIO. The largest class I have atGeorgetown is made up ofonly 30 peo-plel'

The idea of meeting people spontane-ously is important to Karen. "I havemet some people through KOSMIC (agroup of KEIO students who offer helpto foreign students with daily affairsand study) but I felt that this way ofmeeting someone was too prearrangedor unnatural. It was a kind of thingwhere we would sit down at atable andsay, "Let's be friends." In this respect,

Karen misses the casuai socializing inpubs at Georgetown where practicallyall the students go on Saturday nights.However, Karen also has guilty feelings.

She feels that she may be spending toomuch time with her American friends. Karen points out our tendencies totreat the foreign student as a tourist,being a friend, does' not mean beingtreated as a guest. "Some people try tocater for us, but we are here to Iearn.People should not go out oftheir wayto make any special exceptions for us." As an example of this Karen recallsa questionnaire from the school libraryasking whether foreign students would

prefer having English signs put up inthe ]ibrary. "The signs are not neces-sary. We're here to learn Japanese;'she stresses. This may be a pointwhichmany Japanese will have to thiilk about. Speaking of attitudes of Japanesepeople, we asked Karen about how itfeels when she is "singled out" as aGaijin. Her reply was, `"We are different

and we do stand out. It doesn'tbotherme at all," Karen feels this kind ofattitude is natu}'al in a homogeneouscountry such as Japan. However, thisdoes not always hold true with allforeign students. Some are 'deeply con-

cerned about being "singled out."Karen explains that, generally speaking,there are two kinds of foreign students.The first kind accept the differencesbetween Japan and their home countryas something which should be taken forgranted, and are not bothered by it.The second kind not only will bebothered by the difference, but wil1always see them ,in a negative way.Karen definitely belongs to the firstkind, and most of the foreign studentsprob ably do too.

Karen sees many differences betweenGeorgetown Univ. and IÅqEIO, andoccasionally comes across situations in

which she cannot understand why acertain thing has to be the way. i't is.But she does not observe these differ-ences as something negative. She iscareful in not rnaking any hasty general-

izations. "I would never want to putanything down;' she says firmly.Karen's positive attitude, which issurely making her stay in Japan enjoy-able, may be summed up by herwords,"Compare two cultures, but don'tjudge them."

Sagrada Familia Chllrch (g883-- ) Antonio Gaudi was born in l852 andbrought up in Barcelona, the biggestcity of Catalonia district in Spain. Hisfather was a wrought iron craft workerso he was accustomed to architectualcraft. Even in his boyhood he designedfor the school weekly magazine orplanned the renovation of St. MariaChurch. While he was studying in anarchitecture college in Barcelona he won

many prizes in contests. When hedesigned a lecture hall as his graduation

task, his grade was "excellent," but theprincipal of the college said, ttl am not

sure whether I am gtving a designerlicense to a genius or a crazy person."

When he was 26, he sent a design fora certain labour union's clubhouse tothe Paris international exhibition. Itwas just a small work but excellent.0ne rich factory owner Eusebio GUellwas interested in Gaudi's genius and wasvery pleased with his work. Since thistime, for almost forty years Gaudi and

GUell had been close friends. GUellsupported Gaudi's genius and Gaudi

Lightconstructed GUell's fancy. Most of hisworks were commissioned by GUell'scooperation and GUell even commis-sioned his own house from Gaudi.

Catalonia district was a center ofliberalists and anarchists in 19th to 20th
