About me
• Originally from Appleton,
Wisconsin. (I come from
the land of the ice and
snow, the frozen tundra,
etc.)
• UTSR Fellow
• Bachelor’s degree in
Aerospace Engineering and
Mechanics from University
of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
• Currently pursuing a
master’s degree in
mechanical engineering at
the U of M.

COLD FLOW TESTING
Approved for Public Release
Background
• Interior cooling is used in trailing edge. Air flows
around pins. (Usually cylindrical)
• Use room temperature air, hence “cold flow”.
• Test different pin configurations and shapes and find
their pressure drops.
• Tested three shapes with eight non-dimensional
spacings each.

LITERATURE SURVEY OF PIN
FIN ARRAYS

Terminology
Approved for Public Release
Introduction
• Compared fifteen papers about various pin
arrays with our cold flow testing data.
• Pressure drop and/or heat transfer in pin fin
arrays was studied in each paper.
• Goal to find correlations between Reynolds
number and Nusselt number.

Conclusions
• Pin configuration has little impact on Nusselt
number!
• However, both cold flow and journal paper
data shows that there are significant
differences in pressure loss among pin
geometries.
• While overall heat transfer is mainly governed
by Reynolds number, pressure loss is
governed by the restricted area of the pin
geometry.

HYDROCARBON LEAK DETECTION
SYSTEM (OR HOW TO NOT BLOW UP
YOUR ROCKET ON THE TEST STAND)
Approved for Public Release
Overview
• Helped develop a concept to detect fuel leakage from a
propellant valve.
• Researched various sensors and their potential pros and
cons for this project.
• Found off the shelf components to create each
configuration of the HLDS.
• Did lab tests with various configurations of the HLDS.
• Some CAD modeling.
