IUOE, Local 793 Apprenticeships An IUOE, Local 793 Apprenticeship is an Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) program combining in-school and on-the-job training for a specific trades occupation. The IUOE, Local 793 sponsors and supports apprentices in three primary areas. Hoisting Engineers are crane operators in two main categories; mobile and tower cranes.

• Mobile Crane Operator is a 6,000 hour apprenticeship which includes 480 hours or 12 weeks of in-school training.

• Tower Crane Operator is a 3,000 hour apprenticeship which includes 360 hours or 9 weeks of in-school training.

Heavy Equipment Operator consists of 3 main occupations; tractor-loader-backhoe (636A), excavator (636B), and dozer (636C) operator.

• Each occupation is a 2,000-2,500 hour apprenticeship which includes 240 hours or 6 weeks of in-school training.

Concrete Pump Operator - 637C

• This trade is a 2,000-2,500 hour apprenticeship which includes 160 hours or 4 weeks of in-school training.

Training: IUOE, Local 793 in-school training occurs at the Operating Engineers Training Institute of Ontario (OETIO) with locations in Oakville and Morrisburg. The OETIO is approved by the MTCU and trains to the Ministry curriculum standard. IUOE, Local 793 apprentices are dispatched to union companies for the on-the-job training. Apprentices are expected to abide by the contractual agreements between the employer and IUOE, Local 793 and work in accordance with the policies and procedures of the company. Certification:

• An Ontario Certificate of Apprenticeship (C of A) is issued by the MTCU upon successful completion of in-school and on-the-job training requirements for tractor-loader-backhoe (TLB), excavator, dozer, and concrete pump operator.

• An Ontario Certificate of Qualification (C of Q) is issued by the MTCU upon successful completion of the MTCU Hoisting Engineer examination and is valid throughout Canada.

• Resume • Ontario grade 12 or equivalent (transcript) • Current Ontario drivers abstract • Copy of Social Insurance Number (S.I.N)
