Royal Ascot PreviewBen Hayes hoping Redkirk Warrior can deliver for Australia

This is far from new territory for Ben Hayes but in a way, he has never been here like this before.

Back in 2015, Hayes travelled to Newmarket to oversee the extended British stint enjoyed by Criterion (Sebring) but in those days, his name was not above the door of the Lindsay Park operation alongside his father David and Tom Dabernig.

This time around, with Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) set to take his chance in today's Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f), Hayes will be reaching for his top hat as a fully fledged trainer but the youngest member of the training trio insists he is not feeling any extra pressure as a result. However, by the time the field entered the final furlong there was no question which of the trio would be adding another elite level race to their record, with Alpha Centauri cruising into the lead under Colm O’Donoghue and quickly put daylight between herself and the rest of the field in a matter of strides, eventually coming away with an emphatic six length victory over Threading (Exceed And Excel) in second.

The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Veracious (Frankel) came home in third, one and three quarter lengths ahead of Billesdon Brook in fourth, while Teppal could only manage ninth.

The victory also handed Harrington her first win at Royal Ascot, but she was quick to draw attention away from her achievement and express her admiration for Alpha Centauri: “First, I am relieved; I definitely was very nervous today as I know she is a great filly. It was rather nice going into the Irish 1,000 Guineas as we were very much under the radar, she hadn't run well on soft ground two runs before that - today we were there to be shot at," she said.

"I suppose we were very disappointed when we were beaten here with Alpha Centauri last year when she was second in the Albany Stakes - but that's racing, some things happen and some things don't happen - it's great when it does all come together.

"The ground is the key to her. As you see there, she is a very big filly - she weighs 520kg - and I think when she is on soft ground she physically can't get her feet out of the ground. She just floats on top of the ground.

What she wants is good ground, what she doesn't want is heavy ground."Colm was very confident on her, she jumped well and settled great

and when Colm turned in I thought 'jeepers, he has gone very soon,' but the further she went the quicker she went.

"I was getting more and more nervous because it was a very good race. She has a fantastic temperament and is very easy to train. Probably the key for her is that she is so relaxed - Colm said that was only doing a half-speed going up the hill. She is a big-striding filly and Colm didn't want to break her stride at all,” she continued.

"She only ever works on the bridle at home, but she did that sort of run in the Irish Guineas, when she had to go and catch the horse in front of her and then stayed on."

Finally reflecting on training her first winner at the royal meeting, Harrington said: "I have a lot of good people behind me and a lot of very nice owners who give me nice horses. It's very special. I have had Ascot winners but never Royal Ascot winners - it is absolutely fantastic. I had sort of been getting to the stage - with Torcedor going very near yesterday - of thinking 'will it ever happen?' She was my last runner this week, so I said to myself that it was now or never.”

Saturday 23 June 2018 | 4 |Alpha Centauri crushes her rivals in the Coronation Stakes

Continued on page 6>>

<< Continued from page 2 The beautifully-bred Alpha Centauri (3 f Mastercraftsman - Alpha Lupi by Rahy) has won four of her seven starts, amassing £575,537 in career prize-money in the process.

The three-year-old filly is out of the unraced Rahy (Blushing Groom) mare Alpha, whose five foals to race have all been winners with Alpha Centauri being one of her two stakes winners, the other is Listed winner Tenth Star (Dansili).

Alpha is out of Group 1 winner East Of The Moon (Private Account), making her a half-sister to Canda (Storm Cat) the dam of Group 3-winning pair Autocratic (Dubawi) and Evasive (Elusive Quality).

This is the family of the Niarchos’ great multiple Group 1 winner and blue hen producing mare Miesque (Nureyev), who is the dam of six winners including multiple Group 1 winner and champion sire Kingmambo (Mr Prospector), while she is also the dam of Group 3 winners Mingun (A P Indy), Miseque’s Son (Mr. Prospector) and Moon Is Up (Woodman).

Furthermore, she is also the granddam of Group 1 winners Real Steel (Deep Impact) Rumplestiltskin (Danehill), the dam of Group 1 winner Tapestry (Galileo) and Group 3 winner John F Kennedy (Galileo).

Eqtidaar proves his mettle in the Commonwealth Cup

In 2015 Muhaarar (Oasis Dream) won the inaugural running of the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) on his way to being crowned champion sprinter and it seems Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has

another sprinting star on his hands in the form of homebred Eqtidaar (Invincible Spirit), who showed his class when dispatching a classy field in the same race at Royal Ascot yesterday.

The son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) was stepping into Group 1 company for the first time having run fourth last time out in the Carnarvon Stakes (Listed, 6f), but he took this daunting task in his stride, showing an impressive turn of foot to defeat last season’s Gimcrack Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) winner Sands Of Mali (Panis) by a half length.

Saturday 23 June 2018 | 6 |Eqtidaar proves his mettle in the Commonwealth Cup

<< Continued from page 4 Coming home in third was another son of the National Stud-based sire Emblazoned, while Stone Of Destiny (Acclamation) finished fourth.

The field split into two groups, with six coming up the stands' side and the remainder of the field in the centre of the track. Emblazoned hit the front a furlong out but he was already beaten when Eqtidaar came across him slightly close home, to hand Royal Ascot's winningmost trainer Sir Michael Stoute, with this third winner of the week and Jim Crowley his first.

Favourite Sioux Nation (Scat Daddy) was never travelling well and was under Ryan Moore’s drive a long way from home, while James

McDonald’s mount Equilateral (Equiano) looked a threat approaching the furlong marker, but found nothing when asked for his effort.

Stoute said after the race he had always rated the horse, but said he has been unlucky in a few of his races this season.

"We have always liked this horse,” he said. “I thought things just didn't go quite right for him the first time he ran here in the

Pavilion Stakes. Then at Newbury last time, he was on the wrong side of the track and at halfway was too far out of his ground.

"He worked very well the other weekend under Jim Crowley, so we were hopeful.

"He just showed how talented [a sprinter] he is. We have had some good ones like Marwell, Ajdal, and Green Desert. He is progressing nicely."

Eqtidaar (3 c ex Invincible Spirit - Madany by Acclamation) has won two of his five starts, with this his first victory at stakes level, and has accumulated £310,149 in career prize-money.

The three-year-old colt is out of the two-time winning daughter of Acclamation (Royal Applause) Madany, who was also raced by Shadwell. She has produced three foals to race, making Eqtidaar a half-brother to Group 2 winner and 2016 2,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) runner-up Massaat (Teofilo).

Madany herself is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Dolled Up (Whipper) and Listed scorer Zeiting (Zieten), the dam of Group 2 winner Combat Zone (Refuse To Bend) and Group 3 victors Royal Empire (Teofilo) and Scottish (Teofilo). She is also a half-sister to Group 3-placed mare Zut Alors (Pivotal), who produced Poule d'Essai des Pouliches (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Precieuse (Tamayuz)

The win also provided National Stud-based sire Invincible Spirit with his 16th Group 1 winner and 109th stakes winner. He stood for a fee of €120,000 at the Irish National Stud this year.

Coyle hoping for another Group 1Jason Coyle is hoping Siren’s Fury (Myboycharlie) can provide him with his second Queensland Group 1 victory when she runs in today’s Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1350m) at Doomben. Coyle admits he is bemused by the odds about Siren's Fury ($17) who won the Dark Jewel Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) at Scone and was an eye-catching fourth in the Dane Ripper Stakes (Gr 2, 1350m) at Doomben two weeks ago. "She had to go back from the barrier (15) in the Dane Ripper but really hit the line hard," Coyle said. "Siren's Fury has barrier two on Saturday and should be able to lob closer. She was closer than we wanted in the Dark Jewel but there was no early pace.I think there will be a lot more pace on Saturday which suits us."

Prompt Response on song for TiaraCo-trainer Adrian Bott believes the consistent mare Prompt Response (Beneteau) has taken improvement from her last-start second in the Dane Ripper. The filly is on the second line of betting behind three-year-old Champagne

Cuddles (Not A Single Doubt) as she chases a breakthrough win at the elite level and Bott said: “I feel she's so deserving of a Group 1 so it would be really fitting to see her take it out. It would certainly give us a lot of satisfaction. I think it's one of the tougher Tatt's Tiara fields we've seen in recent years though. It's quite open and there's plenty of quality fillies and mares in the field, but she's in great shape.”

Divine Unicorn on trial for Hong KongStayer Divine Unicorn (Lope De Vega) will take another step in an unusual experiment when he tackles the Tattersall's Cup (Gr 3, 2200m) at Doomben today, taking a marked step up in trip from his last outing when third in the Wayne Wilson Mile (Listed, 1600m). Matt Dunn admits he is taking a gamble but believes Divine Unicorn could prove to be a well above-average stayer. "He is owned in Hong Kong but was bought in the United Kingdom," Dunn said. "In the past they have raced horses in the UK and gone straight to Hong Kong but this is a bit of an experiment to race him here first. The weather in Australia is more like Hong Kong than the UK.”

Duff hoping for stakes successImpressive two-year-old Soaring Heart (Show A Heart) is poised to take advantage of an unusual programming decision to give his veteran trainer Pat Duff another stakes win. Soaring Heart is one of only nine horses in the field for the Winning Edge Presentations

Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Doomben today, a race going up against another juvenile contest on the same card. The Aquis Crystal Slipper (1200m) for fillies carries a double QTIS bonus, which means the winner could take home about $148,000 and Duff said: "It is great for the industry but it has made things easier for my bloke as there appears to be a virtual split field and several of the obvious dangers have accepted in the other race."

Pride confident about Eddie’s prospectsJoe Pride believes the prospect of a heavy track at Randwick today enhances the chances of his three-year-old Easy Eddie (Super Easy). The gelding made it four wins from 11 starts when he was successful on the Kensington circuit over 1100 metres on 11 June and tackles the Dad and Dave Handicap (1200m) today. “Just watching him move on wet tracks he looks like he’s comfortable and I’ve had some pretty good wet trackers over the years,’’ Pride said. “You watch enough horses you get an idea which ones will handle it, and there’s no guarantee he’ll handle heavy on Saturday, but I noticed a distinction when he got onto a soft track the other day.”

Heavy track to suit Plymouth RoadFellow Warwick Farm trainer Matt Smith believes the heavy Randwick surface will also suit his stayer Plymouth Road (Tavistock) when he lines up in the Evergreen Turf Handicap (2400m) today. The OTI Racing-owned five-year-old has been placed at his past two starts, the latest when run down late by Follow Suit (Show A Heart) over 2200 metres at Warwick Farm on May 30. “He’s nice and fit, his last couple of runs have been good and we have him where we want him,’’ Smith said. “His weakness is he’s a difficult horse to ride. If he was to get an easy lead I reckon he’ll win. He’ll run the 2400 metres, will handle the ground and he’s never been better since I’ve had him.’’

Payne hoping for juvenile double

David Payne produced two-year-old Toulouse (Lope De Vega) to score at Rosehill last week and hopes Silent Explorer (Lope De Vega) can do the same at Randwick today. Silent Explorer finished one and a half lengths behind Toulouse over 1400 metres last week and comes back to 1200 metres in the 2YO Handicap. While Payne is hoping Toulouse can develop into a Derby prospect, he believes Silent Explorer will be more effective over shorter distances. "Toulouse is out of a Carnegie mare so I expect him to get over ground while Silent Explorer is out of a Flying Spur mare so there is more speed there," Payne said. "He came through his last race well and the wet track at Randwick will suit him.” Winter test for Order Of CommandThree-year-old Order Of Command (Squamosa) could earn a shot at the spring if he can make it three wins in succession in the Great Ocean Road Handicap (1100m) at Flemington today. Danny O’Brien took over training Order Of Command this preparation and the gelding won first-up at Geelong on May 18 before winning again at Ballarat on June 7. "He strikes a pretty solid race there on Saturday with Nature Strip having the good three-year-old form from back in the autumn, so it will be a good test for him," O'Brien told Racing.com. "He's done very well since Ballarat and he's a horse that we think has got a good future."

Lindsay Park juvenile on the improve Good 'N' Fast (Sebring), a half-brother to the Lindsay Park stable's multiple Group 1 placegetter Fast 'n' Rocking (Fastnet Rock), has the chance to break his maiden at Flemington

today. The colt was a promising second at the same track on debut two weeks ago and steps up to 1400 metres today. "He was excellent on debut," co-trainer Tom Dabernig said. "He actually had a wind operation early on so when they've had a wind operation you like to see what they do under race pressure but he hit the line full of running and a couple of strides after the post he was well in front.”

Grey Lion’s gelding to take effect

The decision to geld six-year-old Grey Lion (Galileo) last year may finally be about to pay off with trainer Matt Cumani expecting an improved performance third-up at Flemington today. The European import is yet to win in Australia but has produced a number of strong performances including placings in the VRC Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 3, 2600m) and the Ballarat Cup (Listed, 2200m) last spring. "It took a little while but he's been much more professional and is no longer sweating up so much pre-race," Cumani told Racing.com. Grey Lion runs in the High Country Handicap (2520m) with Luke Nolen taking the ride.

Lane, Williams battle for supremacyWith 11 metropolitan race meetings of the season remaining, Damian Lane and defending champion Craig Williams are tied at the top of the Melbourne jockeys' premiership. Lane has missed the past two Victorian metropolitan meetings through a careless riding suspension but has been back in action this week and returns to city racing at Flemington with a strong book of seven rides. Among them are Star Fall (Zoustar), Creativity (Master Of Design) and Nature Strip (Nicconi), who are all favourites in early markets on the first three races.

Seven to show premium Victorian meetingsRacing Victoria and Channel Seven have extended their agreement for the broadcaster to show the state’s 21 premium thoroughbred race meetings live on its free to air channel for at least another two years. RV and the media company announced the deal, which runs until June 30 2020, yesterday which will see Channel Seven broadcast meetings such as the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) on its main channel or 7Two. The agreement also ensures that racing fans and sporting enthusiasts can access a free-to-air broadcast of Victorian and Sydney racing on the one channel on a minimum 21 occasions throughout the year.

Altrenogest investigation under wayRacing NSW is aware of the Racing Victoria warning published at 5.45pm on 19 June regarding veterinary prescription animal remedies containing the progestagen altrenogest, used to control the cyclic activity of fillies and mares. It has been recently discovered that certain batches of altrenogest products may contain low level traces of trenbolone and/or trendione. Racing NSW is conducting its own investigations into this matter. Until the situation is clarified, NSW trainers and veterinarians should avoid using injectable products containing altrenogest, and as a precaution, should not administer oral altrenogest products within one clear day prior to racing.

Step up in trip for Te Toro PearlTrainer Jon Miller hopes the pedigree of progressive filly Te Toro Pearl (Bullbars) will come to the fore when she attempts to bring up a hat-trick of wins when she runs at Tauranga today. The three-year-old is entered for the San Pellegrino 3YO Premier (1400m) and it will be her first attempt beyond 1200 metres. “Hopefully, she gets the 1400 metres – her mother Te Toro Lass did,” Miller said. “She relaxes in the running and she hasn’t gone backwards so we’ll see what happens on Saturday. There is a three-year-old race at Taranaki next month, we might look at that.”

Bright future tipped for Lord ValentineTwo-year-old Lord Valentine (Rip Van Winkle) has inherited his share of the family ability, but is likely to need more time for it to become apparent. The gelding will improve with the experience of his first race day outing at Te Aroha tomorrow in the Jadran Basketball Team (1000m) although breeder, owner and trainer Darrell Hollinshead is not ruling anything out.“It wouldn’t surprise me if he won, if he did everything right, but he doesn’t know a lot at this stage,” he said. “He’s very green, probably the greenest horse we’ve lined up. He should get through the ground and we thought we’d give him a run rather than go back to the trials.”

Trial winner sold to Hong KongUnraced two-year-old Juddmonte (Cape Blanco) has been sold to Hong Kong interests after his barrier trial victory at Cambridge last month. “He’s been sold, the money was so good we had to sell, it was incredible,” said former trainer and part-owner Andrew Campbell. The colt was originally purchased out of Cambridge Stud’s 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale draft for NZ$30,000 and is out of Tuesday’s Child (Zabeel). The deal to take Juddmonte to the Hong Kong stable of Danny Shum was brokered by Patrick McCarten of Tauranga. Fawcett joins Autridge stableApprentice jockey Jasmine Fawcett will join the Toby Autridge stable at Matamata. The 24-year-old, who is currently indentured to Jim Collett, will continue her break-out season from her new quarters from Monday. “This will be new to us and our first apprentice,” Autridge’s wife Debbie said. “Jasmine is very eager to learn more and while we’re a smaller stable, she will be able to ride trackwork for as many other trainers as possible.” Fawcett rode her 47th winner for the season at Hawera yesterday.

Purton and Moreira go head to head in Premier PlateTony Cruz looks set to provide championship rivals Zac Purton and Joao Moreira with a chance to win the Premier Plate Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin tomorrow. Purton and

Moreira will ride stablemates Exultant (Teofilo) and Romantic Touch (Northern Meteor) in the Group 3, with current leader Purton on the former and Moreira on the latter. “The way things are, it looks like Joao and Zac could each ride three or four winners; look at last Saturday when they each rode three. Zac has the upper hand in the title race right now but it’s going to be a great battle to the finish,” said Cruz. Purton leads the race with 124 wins, five clear of the defending champion Moreira.

16 for Invincible SpiritThe National Stud-based Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) sired his 16th Group 1 winner yesterday and 109th stakes winner after the Shadwell Stud owned and bred Eqtidaar (3 c ex Madany by Acclamation) ran out an impressive winner of the Commonwealth Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot yesterday. The three-year-old colt had no problems with this major step up in class and beat Sands Of Mali (Panis) by a half length, with another length back to Emblazoned (Invincible Spirit) in third. Invincible Spirit, the sire of Yarraman Park stallion I Am Invincible, stood at the Irish National Stud for a fee of €120,000 in 2018.

Old Persian proves too tough in King EdwardGodolphin homebred Old Persian (3 c Dubawi - Indian Petal by Singspiel) stayed on stoutly to win the King Edward Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) at Royal Ascot yesterday. The Charlie Appleby-trained colt hit the front with a furlong left to travel and had to dig deep to fend off the challenge from Rostropovich (Frankel), who he eventually beat by with another back to Giuseppe Garibaldi (Galileo) in third. The China Horse Club-raced Raa Atoll (Sea The Stars) led for most of the contest, but faded in the final furlong to finish fourth. Old Persian is out a sister to 2007 Ribblesdale Stakes (Gr 2, 1m4f) winner Silkwood (Singspiel) and he is one of 150 stakes winners for Dubawi (Dubai Millennium), who stands at Dalham Hall in Newmarket for a fee of £250,000. 17 for ZoffanyFormer shuttler Zoffany, a son of Dansili

(Danehill), was handed his 17th stakes winner yesterday after Main Edition (2 f ex Maine Lobster by Woodman) stayed on bravely to win the Albany Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Royal Ascot yesterday. The two-year-old filly, who is now unbeaten in all three career starts, beat La Pelosa (Dandy Man) by a neck with Fairyland (Kodiac) finishing half a length away in third. Main Edition is a half-brother to Group 2 winner Major Cadeaux (Cadeaux Genereux) and fellow Royal Ascot scorer Beachfire, who won the 2011 Wolferton Handicap (Listed, 1m2f). Zoffany is represented by one Group 1 winner, Irish bred Ventura Storm, who is now trained by Lindsay Park.

Call To The Bar just gets home at ChantillyThe Pia Brandt-trained Call To The Bar (4 g ex Henrythenavigator - Perfect Hedge by Unfuwain) held on well for pressure inside the final 100 metres to win the Prix La Moskowa (Listed, 3000m) at Chantilly yesterday. The four-year-old gelding won the Prix du Lys (Gr 3, 2400m) as a three-year-old before being beaten into second in the Belmont Derby (Gr 1, 10f) on his next start. After finishing first-up third on his first start as a four-year-old he returned to winning ways yesterday, beating the OTI-Raced Casterton (Fastnet Rock) by a head with another three quarters of a length back to Tamellly (New Approach) in third.

Te Akau toasting Torcedor’s runNew Zealand syndicator Te Akau Racing are celebrating the third-placed performance of Torcedor (Fastnet Rock) in the £500,000 Ascot Gold Cup (Gr. 1, 2m3f) at Royal Ascot on Thursday. Gallant when fifth in the Ascot Gold Cup last year, Torcedor (14/1) secured a nice position in second for regular jockey Colm O’Donoghue, took a lead to the 400 metres, was inside a line of four at the 200 metres and coming again at the line. “He drew the outside and I thought it was a terrific run,” said Te Akau principal David Ellis, who bought the horse. “It was a fantastic effort and I was really proud of him. “The Gold Cup is an incredibly prestigious race, one of the best staying tests in the world, and ultimately the Queen presents the cup to the owners, so it’s an amazing event.”

Redkirk Warrior RACING POST

| 12 |

"It's a similar feeling really, I had my heart in it with Criterion just like I do now, the only difference is my name is on the card," he says.

"Obviously I'm now a trainer but I wouldn't say I feel a greater responsibility. I've done it a lot now, so I'm a bit more relaxed and I know what I'm doing. The horse have travelled beautifully, so as trainer right now I'm pretty relaxed and just looking forward to getting him to the race."

What pressure Hayes is feeling comes only from a sense of responsibility for those back home, knowing as he does how much Australia's racing public enjoys seeing one of their own land a blow at Royal Ascot.

"The whole of Australia wants this horse to run well, so I just hope he can perform up to everyone's expectations," he says. "In that regard there's pressure, but the horse himself is given as few headaches as is possible with a trip like this."

There are few parallels to be drawn between Criterion's preparation and Redkirk Warrior's,

haven't had much to do with him. He's ticked all the boxes so far."

Win or lose, it is unlikely British racing fans have seen the last of Hayes, with the Lindsay Park team always eager to compete on the global stage when the opportunity presents itself.

"Dad's always loved competing internationally and I've caught his bug, I think it's fantastic," Hayes enthuses. "It gets you out of your comfort zone and it's something I really enjoy. Normally you get a great welcome when you come and the local trainers seem to enjoy the challenge of trying to beat a horse from a different country.

"If we ever have a horse good enough, I think we'll always travel it."

the former having been in Britain for almost two months prior to his Prince Of Wales's Stakes (Gr 1, 1m2f) run, whereas the later has been here for a little over a fortnight.

Hayes though acknowledges that the team have learned lessons from that trip that have informed how they have planned this year's raid.

"Redkirk and Criterion are completely different types of horses, so the work we've been doing this time is very different. Redkirk also only arrived 16 days before the race and has done most of his work at home. Criterion had been here for nearly eight weeks when he ran, so he had a completely different build-up.

now, he has only just recovered from Dubai and he suffers from pollen a bit more than some other horses."

Roger Charlton, trainer of Projection

"He's a consistent horse but this is the highest level he's competed in.

"There's a likelihood of a fast pace and I'm hoping he will be patiently ridden and come through to pick up some prize-money. He's drawn bang in the middle, which is perfect."

David Elsworth, trainer of Sir Dancealot

"We have every reason to believe he will put up a bold show. The form book tells you he has a bit to find, and he does have ground to make up on Harry Angel, but let's hope we get closer to him this time."

James Fanshawe, trainer of The Tin Man

"He won his trial nicely at Windsor and he seems fresh and well but he isn't a horse who tells you a lot at home.

"We know he loves the track, but although he doesn't mind fast ground and has a good record on it, I hope they have put enough water on it.

"If he runs as well as he did last year then I'll be happy but really it's a case of what will be will be. He has good acceleration and I hope he produces it."

Wesley Ward, trainer of Bound For Nowhere

"His two comeback races this year were sensational and he ran an explosive race on his last start.

"His breezes have been nothing short of phenomenal and I'm so excited to run him. He really is going to run the race of his life."

Stephane Wattel, trainer of City Light

"What City Light has done on the track this season confirms the improvement he has been

showing in the mornings."He has grown up mentally and earned the

right to run in a race like this. Who knows where that improvement might end?

"He has the cruising speed to follow the pace of a race like this and then it’s a matter of whether he can accelerate again at the end."

Charlie Appleby, trainer of D'bai

"He’s a horse I’ve always wanted to take down the sprinting route. He'll love the stiff six at Ascot and hopefully can travel well

throughout and then pick up the pieces late."

Clive Cox, trainer of Harry Angel

"I think the fact he hasn't yet won at Ascot is purely coincidence. He chased home Blue Point, who was always a good horse, last April, his second to Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup has to be respected and then his run on Champions Day came at the end of the season and on completely different ground to what he'll

Redkirk Warrior's Diamond Jubilee rivals - what the trainers say:

face on Saturday. I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it.

"The York run has to be considered respectable. The penalty he had to carry was obviously a concern first time out, but he still won well, and he has definitely come on for the run, without a shadow of doubt.

"If he could get his head in front it would be wonderful. It's a race to savour and we're looking forward to it. I can't wait."

Aidan O'Brien, trainer of Intelligence Cross, Merchant Navy and Spirit Of Valor

“We were delighted with Merchant Navy at the Curragh as we hadn’t got him very long and hadn’t done a lot with him.

We expected him to come on a lot for the run and we think he has come forward nicely since. We’re very happy with him.

“Spirit Of Valor ran very well last time and we think he has improved since, while we’re happy with Intelligence Cross, who made the running in the Greenlands. The faster the ground, the more he will like it."

Dean Ivory, trainer of Librisa Breeze

"It sounds a silly to thing to say but I'm going to know more about how he is after he has run.

"The fast ground is a question mark and I'd have to say he is a better horse in the autumn with cut in the ground. He is getting on a bit

Diamond Jubilee StakesAnd now, the end is near and so I (we) face the

final curtain has been crooned each and every day from Royal Ascot’s bandstand balladeer and thus is an appropriate introduction to day five where either one of the two Australian bred sprinters, Merchant Navy or Redkirk Warrior, is poised to take the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes.

The David Hayes trained Redkirk Warrior may well improve the six winners from 34 (not the 35 listed in the media guide) runners Royal Ascot strike rate of Australian trained horses which is the best of any country outside the UK and Europe.

But what of the strike rate of Merchant Navy’s handler Aidan O’Brien who has won 18 races in the three previous years at Royal Ascot and his near unblemished Royal meeting record with acquisitions from Australia, to wit So You Think, Haradasun and Starspangledbanner? The right things happen for Coolmore/Ballydoyle or somehow they make them happen with no stone unturned preparations.

Yes, Redkirk Warrior had the better of Merchant Navy in the Newmarket despite conceding him five kilograms and they now meet on equal terms. However, they were on opposite sides of the track and while Redkirk Warrior’s finish was visually impressive his rival, in fact, ran the last 600 metres six lengths quicker.

Betting solely on relative weights is a rapid path to the poorhouse; Merchant Navy has had

the huge benefit of a lead-up run (and win) in the region and the Ascot six furlongs (1200 metres) is a much stiffer test than that at Flemington and that might be some query with a resuming Redkirk Warrior.

The presence of Harry Angel in the race, means the odds will allow you to back both visitors. That I will do but with a clear loading to O’Brien’s charge.

Eve Johnson Houghton and the Mitchells

Johnson Houghton won the opening race of the week, the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes with Accidental Agent to claim her first Royal Ascot success and first at the highest level.

Delighted to be on hand was Segenhoe Stud’s racing manager Bill Mitchell who, before training in his own right, worked for Johnson Houghton’s father Fulke who prepared ten royal meeting winners.

“I worked with Eve’s father in 1979 and 1980 and Eve later came to Australia and stayed and worked with us so it was great to be there on Tuesday to see her achieve such a momentous win,” Mitchell said.

WinxThe 25 straight winning wonder mare would

have had the aforementioned Queen Anne Stakes at her mercy but, instead, connections resisted the Royal Ascot overtures in favour of having Chris Waller prepare her for a fourth Cox

Plate. But could she grace the Queen’s meeting in 2019?

Co-owner Debbie Kepitis, with husband Paul and daughter Kara, were guests of Great British Racing and well enamoured with how well they were feted even in the absence of the world’s best turf performer. “It really has been a great experience and the hospitality excellent. You would love to bring a horse here,’ said the engaging Paul.

Winx doesn’t have any significant day to day management issues according to the Kepitis’ and she is about turn ‘only’ seven. You imagine her to be older. And while most of us assumed that a fourth Cox Plate, especially if successful, would be her denouement - I wonder if that may not necessarily be the case. The week, of course, saw one possible Cox Plate challenger in Cracksman lose lustre and that fourth Cox Plate (touch wood) is more probable than possible.

“IT REALLY HAS BEEN A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND THE HOSPITALITY

EXCELLENT. YOU WOULD LOVE TO BRING

A HORSE HERE"PAUL KEPITIS

Blue PointTraining performance of the week goes to

Charlie Appleby - winning the King’s Stand Stakes with Blue Point. Rarely do horses win Group 1 races coming off a below-par performance and yet Blue Point bounced back from two failed international missions in Dubai

and Hong Kong. Not to mention a rough trip home.

Appleby said the horse took no harm from the Hong Kong trip and had responded well to a freshen up after an eventful return flight.

"He had a little break when he came back and responded really well. There was a bit of turbulence on the flight back so it wasn't the smoothest of journeys for him. His run in Hong Kong was disappointing but we were taking those speedballs on in their own patch and probably erred tactically,” he said.

Interestingly, the previous GB trained sprinter to go to Hong Kong was The Tin Man. He missed last year’s Hong Kong Sprint with a fever but returned to win first-up in the UK and today contests the Diamond Jubilee Stakes which he won last year.

James McdonaldMcDonald claimed his first Royal Ascot

winner aboard Expert Eye for Sir Michael Stoute and might that be a precursor to a more permanent relationship between the two given

that many of Stoute’s ‘go to’ riders are often committed elsewhere?

"It's a huge thrill to come here and ride a Royal Ascot winner. I can't put into words how much this means,’ said the 26 year-old Mcdonald who is, in this scribe’s opinion, as naturally gifted as any jockey and one who probably has ‘fire in the belly’ after his 18 months ban.

Sitting in a London hotel 24 hours before the start of Royal Ascot, it is not the five days of high class racing that is exciting Widden Stud's Antony

Thompson. Rather, it is the prospect of a British raid of his own in 2019, with confirmation having come in the week prior that champion first season sire Zoustar (Northern Meteor) will shuttle to Tweenhills Stud in 2019.

Thomson is here to talk about his lofty opinion of Zoustar and he has picked an appropriate day, with this being the morning of the Goffs London Sale, the event at which Zoustar paraded before British breeders back in 2014.

It was not meant to be that way, of course. With Widden having secured a deal for Zoustar in the build up to the 2013 Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m), the colt subsequently delivered a devastating performance up the Flemington straight, catching the eye of an international admirer in the process.

Qatar Racing boss Sheikh Fahad Al Thani was on hand, his Side Glance (Passing Glance)

having won the LKS Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) on the same card, and along with David Redvers, he fell in love with Zoustar and wanted to act.

Taking up the story, Thompson recalls: "Sheikh Fahad inspected him at the stables on the Sunday after the Coolmore - I think Jamie Spencer (who rode Side Glance) was there that day and [David Redvers] where with him that day.

"Sheikh Fahad had been very impressed with him in the race but when he saw him that day, that's when I got a real sense that there was an opportunity to actually talk about possibly bringing the horse up here to race."

With Qatar Racing on board, the plan was hatched that he would head to Royal Ascot and win the Diamond Jubilee and Redvers, also present at the hotel, remembers just how convinced of victory he was.

"Getting our colours on him was very important because here appeared to be a horse who could blow away apart European sprint race," he says.

It was not to be though, as Zoustar picked

Widden's Thompson proud to play a part in Zoustar's British mission

up a knock at trainer Charlie Hills' yard, where he was residing, ending the Royal Ascot dream and indeed his racing career. He paraded at the London Sale as the focus shifted to planning for the future.

Thompson says there was a temptation to bring him back to Britain for the following northern hemisphere breeding season but in the end, the decision was taken to give the colt the chance to prove himself in his homeland first.

"We contemplated shuttling from day one because we had enormous faith in him," Thompson explains. "David was so impressed with the horse physically, there was a lot of chat about him and perhaps we could have launched him but we decided to wait.

"At that stage, his fee would not have been at a lever where we would get quite as good a level of mare to him to give him a really good opportunity, so the plan was to wait until he became champion first season sire and then bring him up, when he's the real deal. That way, he could be standing at a better fee and getting better mares, because we'd really have traction.

"I just had so much belief in this horse from day one but I was just keen to hold back and come up when the time was right. The timing now is perfect. He's been really well supported in Australia with the number of mares he's covered and importantly, in the sale ring, the buyers have really jumped on him.

"Every sale you go to, everyone raves about the Zoustars. They have imposing physicals, great temperament and a really big action. That's what sells - when you have a horse with a really good action, people always find a bit extra for those."

WAS RIGHT."ANTONY THOMPSON

Page 17: International meetings: Coronation Stakes International ... · International Group races: Ascot (UK) - Diamond Jubilee Stakes (Gr 1, 6f) T. he Niarchos family’s homebred . ... while

For Thompson, there is a great sense of pride in having the opportunity to promote one of Australia's most exciting stallions in Britain and he adds: "We're excited, he's obviously the first horse we've shuttled back the other way. To bring one back is so important for us and we'll have some mares to support him."

Widden will not be the only ones providing mares. Sheikh Fahad himself, unsurprisingly, will be doing his bit, as will Redvers and his business partner Hannah Wall, via there Redwall Bloodstock, who have been busy at Australian sales this year doing just that.

Redvers, as great an advocate for Zoustar as could be found anywhere in the world, will be putting his money where his mouth is while he encourages his compatriots to do the same.

"We are so convinced ourselves by him," says Redvers. "I bought two mares in Australia myself to send to him and I'll be buying and sending as many as I can get in here. You just don't get an opportunity like this."

Urging British breeders to "wake up" to the opportunity, Redvers adds: "Anybody who wants

to breed a top class horse [should be excited by this]. He wouldn't, in any other circumstances, be able to come here because economically it doesn't make sense but because of our involvement we're able to afford that opportunity here that we wouldn't otherwise have.

"Sheikh Fahad will continue to support him 100 per cent, as will I personally. There is going to be an awful lot of support for him and from our point of view, as a stallion farm, he's incredibly exciting because there is hardly a decent mare in Europe who can't be covered by him.

"He's the strongest possible physical and the strongest possible racehorse from the country that produces the best sprinters in the world, so we've got an opportunity to really do something.

"We've seen already this year, some of the horses that have come up and wouldn't be fit to stand in the paddock with him have done really well and we hope he will go several leagues higher."

Thompson's pride in Zoustar similarly drips

from his every word and the historical significance of the opportunity is not lost on him.

"Not only is he going to be champion first season sire this season, he would have been champion first season sire in any season," he beams. "For him to get through $3 million in prize-money already, if you look at the history and all of our great sires who have come through, he's got them covered, so that's the bit that really excited me from a historical point of view.

"As a stud master, to work with this type of horse has just been a dream."

OverviewDual Group 1-winning sprinter Impending (Lonhro) will join the Darley

Northwood Park roster this season, where he will stand for an introductory fee of $22,000 (inc GST).

The Darley bred and Godolphin-raced son of Lonhro (Octagonal) retired the winner of five of his 18 starts, 17 of which were in stakes company, amassing $2,403,989 in career prize-money.

Trained at the beginning of this career by John O’Shea, Impending only had two starts as a juvenile, opening his account on debut at Rosehill, before running third on his second start in the Ken Russell Memorial Classic (Gr 3, 1200m) at the Sunshine Coast.

Returning as a three-year-old, Impending ran first-up third behind subsequent Group 1 winner and now fellow Darley stallion Astern (Medaglia d’Oro) in the Run to the Rose Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m) and finished third again to him in the Golden Rose Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) on his next start.

Impending made his stakes breakthrough on his next racecourse appearance in the Stan Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1500m) in September, beating Divine Prophet (Choisir), who reversed that form on their next start in the Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

The next preparation he recorded third place finishes in both the Star Kingdom Handicap (Gr 3, 1200m) and Arrowfield 3YO Sprint Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m).

In the winter of his three-year-old preparation he was sent to Queensland and ran first-up fourth in the Kingsford-Smith Cup (Gr 1, 1300m) and made his Group 1 breakthrough in the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1350m) two weeks later, for interim Godolphin trainer Darren Beadman.

Trained by James Cumming as a four-year-old, he held the contistent form he had shown as throughout his career, winning the Victory Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and also recorded seconds in both the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m).

On the penultimate start of his career the tough colt clinched a much deserved second win at Group 1 level, taking out last month’s Kingsford-Smith Cup.

Impending (4 h Lonhro - Mnemosyne by Encosta De Lago) is the fifth foal out of five-time stakes winner Mnemosyne (Encosta De Lago), who

was victorious in the 2005 Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and the 2006 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m).

By champion broodmare sire in Encosta De Lago (Fairy King), Mnemosyne is a daughter of Listed winner My Juliet (Canny Lad) who also produced the stakes-placed gelding Tantat Secret (Secret Savings) and five other winners.

Impending is a half-brother to Cameron Handicap (Gr 3, 1500m) winner Forget (Exceed And Excel) and also has a three-year-old sister called Epidemic (Lonhro) who won her three starts this winter, including the Helen Coughlan Stakes (Listed, 1200m).

Our Sunny Girl raced beyond midfield, got a split at the 300m, challenged at the 100m and fought well for a close second, also going well on debut.

VERDICT Moonlight Romance has to be respected given that sherepresents Wesley Ward, but French trainer Matthieu Palussiere

is becoming a trainer to keep an eye on in Royal Ascot 2yo races and his JUNIUSBRUTUS is the selection having shown bundles of speed when easily winning hisfirst two starts. Stablemate Rolling King could also run well. Dom Carlos, QueenOf Bermuda, Sabre and Van Beethoven have all shown strong form, althoughthere’s a question mark about the drop back in trip for the last-named runner.Kessaar and Mutawaffer are others to consider, and Kapono is one of the moreinteresting outsiders having powered clear at Goodwood last time.[Ben Hutton]

VERDICT The runners from Australia and USA have made a wonderfulcontribution to this meeting over the years and their

representatives this time give the race an exotic flavour, with the former countryrepresented by star sprinters MERCHANT NAVY, now with Aidan O’Brien, andRedkirk Warrior, joined by Bound For Nowhere who is no mean contenderfrom the United States. Merchant Navy has ground to make up on Redkirk Warrior onone run in Australia but he was given plenty to do and the signs at the Curraghrecently were that he has improved since. It’s too soon to be sure that Harry Angelis not the horse here that he is elsewhere, despite four (explainable) defeats, but thefact remains that on this track he hasn’t yet shown the brilliant form he’s capable of.Last year’s winner The Tin Man has more to do this time, but don’t be surprised ifthe excellent Librisa Breeze is bearing down on them late on.[Emily Weber]

VERDICT On A Session is highly respected from the same Frenchconnections as last year’s Albany winner Different League and

having impressed when winning exactly the same races in his build-up. However,NATALIE’S JOY looked something special when winning on her debut atGoodwood and will probably be hard to beat. Next on the list are fellow once-racedwinners Nate The Great and Arthur Kitt. When Churchill won this race two yearsago for Aidan O’Brien he’d had only one previous race and been beaten, butCardini has shown less in his two attempts.[Richard Austen]

VERDICT Sir Michael Stoute has won this race ten times, including seven ofthe last 12 runnings, and his CRYSTAL OCEAN looks set to

enhance that excellent record. The colt is yet another fine example of Stoute’smasterful handling with late-developing types and he can maintain his unbeaten 2018record. His main dangers are Idaho and Barsanti, who filled the first two places inthis contest last year.[Steve Boow]

VERDICT An intriguing puzzle with the unbeaten Dreamfield bringing avery different profile into the race. A mark of 103 could prove

lenient for a colt of such undoubted potential and his inexperience for a race like thisis less of a hindrance for one with such an uncomplicated racing style. He’sobviously feared, but there are interesting alternatives. Tupi lurks on a very handymark, Gilgamesh could progress again for an end-to-end gallop at 6f and SpringLoaded’s Doncaster procession suggested that he could win one of these tophandicaps. Preference, however, is for the admirable MR LUPTON. Richard Fahey’s5yo is ideally suited to the strong pace these big fields tend to provide and his latestwin, over an inadequate trip and when he was the only one to make up any realground from the rear, shouldn’t be underestimated.[Paul Smith]

VERDICT The weights very much favour THOMAS HOBSON, who can winat this meeting for the second year running after taking last

season’s Ascot Stakes. The race might have come too soon for him when he wasn’tquite as good when second in this race four days later and he is better judged on therest of his 2017 form, which gives him very good prospects. This is a very good prizeto win and it is worth trusting that his masterful trainer has him fully primed for it onthis return from a break. Nearly Caught may be next best ahead of Pallasator.[Mel Cullinan]
