Established over 70 years ago in California, Carl’s Jr. has a longstanding history of serving premium quality hamburgers, and is known as the true representative of the “authentic American hamburger.”

Back in 1941, using nothing more than a hot dog cart, a young Carl N. Karcher and his wife Margaret launched the now legendaryCarl’s Jr. brand.

On his first day in the fast-food business, Carl N. Karcher took in $14.75. In fiscal year 2012, his namesake CKE Restaurants, Inc. earned revenues of approximately $1.3 billion. The story of CKE Restaurants, and its flagship Carl’s Jr. restaurant chain, is the quintessential American success story. What began as one man’s entrepreneurial venture in 1941 has evolved into one of the most powerful entities in the quick-service restaurant industry.

The primary target market for Carl’s Jr. products is young, hungry guys, but advertising must be motivating to other key demographics including men over 34 and women.

CKE Restaurants, Inc. today announced the opening of its first Carl’s Jr. restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand. This is the first of many Carl’s Jr. restaurants planned to open in New Zealand over the next five years. The restaurant is operated by Forsgren NZ Limited, a family business owned by Carl’s Jr. operator Barry Forsgren and his brother-in-law Michael Jones, former star of New Zealand’s national rugby team All Blacks.

CKE Restaurants, Inc. announced today that Jove Franchise Development Corporation (“Jove”) has opened the first Carl’s Jr. restaurant in Canada. This restaurant is located in Kelowna, British Columbia, and is the first of five Carl’s Jr. restaurants Jove plans to open and operate in Canada. CKE plans to open additional Carl’s Jr. restaurants as part of a larger expansion across Canada in the coming years.

CKE’s entry into Canada is part of a strategic plan to accelerate franchise development in international markets and to double CKE’s international presence to over 700 restaurants within the next five years. CKE Restaurants, Inc. (NYSE: CKR) opened its first Carl’s Jr. restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam this week. This marks the first of at least 25 Carl’s Jr. units to be opened in Vietnam over the next six years and is the first major Western quick-service hamburger chain to open in the market. The restaurants in Vietnam will be operated by Mesa Asia Pacific Trading Services Company Limited, whose parent is a successful holding company specializing in consumer goods distribution, restaurant operations, media and real estate development.

The first of 25 Carl’s Jr. restaurants planned for Vietnam opened this week in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

CKE’s entry into the Vietnam market is part of a strategic plan to accelerate franchise development in international markets and grow our system as a whole. The 25 restaurant development deal is part of a greater development plan that CKE Restaurants has for Asia. In addition to existing operations in China, Singapore, Malaysia, American Samoa and Vietnam, CKE plans to enter Indonesia later this year after recently signing a commitment agreement with PT Fortune Foods Limited to open 25 Carl’s Jr. restaurants in Jakarta, Indonesia. CKE continues to expand its presence in the region and is actively seeking new franchisees.

Currently, CKE franchises 342 international restaurants between both its Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s brands. The company has strategic development plans to double its International presence within the next five years.
