Abstract
Multimedia is the most common technological application in the field of education. It increases student’s success, affects student’s attitudes in the positive way and makes lessons more enjoyable. The present study aims to find out the influence of multimedia based instruction on academic achievement of the secondary school students in social science. Quasi experimental method was selected for the study. The design selected was Posttest only design. The study was conducted on a sample of 60, 8th standard students, out of them 30 students were selected as the experiment group and the other 30 students as the control group. The tools used were achievement test, lesson plans based on multimedia and activity oriented approach. The posttest scores were tabulated and analyzed statistically by the techniques of t-test. It is the need of the hour to establish some innovative methods in teaching learning process.
1. INTRODUCTION Multimedia in education illustrates the convergence of communication and computing
systems and the adoption of developing technology as it can play a role in the rich
education process. Early experiments were based on programmed instruction, and have

Ramya S., Prof. (Dr.) T.V.Thulasidharan :: Influence of multimedia based instruction on academic achievement in social science
exploited whatever computing resources were available at that time. Latterly, these have
become multimedia oriented, rather than simply computer oriented.
Learning becomes effective when students are actively involved in the teaching
learning process. To extend their different senses are related their learning becomes
meaningful. For using various senses different media and materials are used in the
classroom and the learning experiences are made quite relevant and effective that is why
the media and materials are called Multimedia materials, multi-sensory materials or
instructional aids or instructional materials. These materials mainly being of two kinds
auditory and visual, are together known as Audio-Visual aids. Learning becomes effective
when it is interesting, hence attempts should be made for utilizing various media in the
teaching learning process.
2. NEED AND SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY
To face the challenges of present and future, and to compete with the other nations
in this information age, every nation will have to enhance the quality of its education
system, which is possible only by exploring new dimensions and benefiting from the
means of information and communication technology. This study will explore new
dimensions for the development of quality of education in India. Influence of Multimedia
Based Instruction has been used in various subjects especially in Mathematics, Medicine,
Nursing, Language, and Science. Advanced countries are improving the quality of
education by introducing innovation associated with technology including multimedia.
This study may encourage utilization of this innovation in various schools in India.
Multimedia based instruction has the potential to cope with the needs of
individualized learning, cooperative learning, and constructivist approaches (Maddux,
Johnson, & Willies, 1997). Development of multimedia based instructional programme
and its widespread acceptance with provision of necessary facilities for it may suggest an
alternative mode of instruction. Findings of this study may be a source of encouragement
for the widespread use of multimedia based instruction at various grades in various subject
areas. This study may also be the source of inspiration for researchers to develop
educational videos, animations, tests, etc. and also conduct experiments.
3. DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS
Multimedia Based Instruction: Multimedia based instruction refers to computer-
mediated instruction that is presented concurrently in more than one medium. It
consists of some, but not necessarily all, of the following elements: text; still
graphic images; motion graphics; animations; hypermedia; photographs; video;
and audio, i.e., sounds, music, and narration. Multimedia can support multiple
representations of the same piece of information in a variety of formats. This has
several implications for learning. (Ke, 2008)
Academic Achievement: Academic achievement represents performance
outcomes that indicate the extent to which a person has accomplished specific

4. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
‘Influence of Multimedia Based Instruction on Academic Achievement In Social Science’
5. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
1. To find out the influence of multimedia based instruction on academic achievement of
secondary school students in Social Science.
2. To find out the influence of multimedia based instruction on academic achievement on
the sub sample
6. HYPOTHESES OF THE STUDY
1. There will be significant difference between the academic achievement of secondary
school students in Social Science taught through multimedia based instruction and that
of the activity oriented method of instruction.
2. There will be significant difference in the academic achievement of secondary school
students in Social Science taught with multimedia based instruction on sub sample.
a) Gender
7. METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY
Quasi experimental method was used for conducting the study and the design selected was
posttest only design ( Best & Kahn, 2011). The study was conducted on a sample of 60
secondary school students following Kerala state syllabus. The tools such as Achievement
test and lesson transcripts based on multimedia approach and activity oriented approach
were prepared and standardized by the investigator. The statistical technique used for
analysis was the t test.
8. SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The main purpose of the present study was to find out the Influence of Multimedia Based
Instruction in teaching selected topics in Social Science on secondary school students over
the activity oriented method of teaching. The investigator felt that the present study would
help the teachers for developing teaching learning materials and make teaching learning
process more meaningful, effective, and interesting. Students could be trained for self
learning, principals, and teachers could take decision to implement new methods in
classrooms. The teacher could be trained to prepare multimedia based instructions through
experts. Students could get a chance to learn through visuals. The investigator felt that the
classroom atmosphere would become lively through this method. Hence, keeping all these
in view the investigator attempted an experiment to study the influence of Multimedia
Based Instruction in teaching Social Science to secondary school students.

9. ANALYSIS OF t TEST
There will be significant difference between the academic achievement of secondary
school students in Social Science taught through multimedia based instruction and that of
the activity oriented method of instruction.

Scores of Experimental and Control Group
Group Mean SD N t Level of
Significance
Experimental 12.12 2.75 30 3.56 0.01
Control 9.6 3.09 30
The data and result in Table 1 indicates that there is significant difference between posttest
scores in academic achievement of secondary school students in Social Science of
experimental group, and control group since the obtained t (3.56) was greater than the
table value (2.46) for df 29 at 0.01 level of significance.
Test of Tenability of Hypothesis 1
The hypothesis 1 states that there will be significant difference between the
academic achievement of secondary school students in Social Science taught through
multimedia based instruction and that of the activity oriented method of instruction. The
hypothesis was accepted.

10. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS OF THE STUDY
The findings of the present study revealed that multimedia based instruction as an
instructional strategy geared towards students’ needs, interests, and expertise. It provided flexible learning environment and enhanced achievement in Social Science. In the present
research, students taught through multimedia based instruction exhibited better gain in
academic achievement and retention in Social Science as compared to students taught by
activity oriented method. The present study has several implications for Students,
Teachers, Parents, Administrators, Government, and Non- Governmental Organizations.
