Abstract

This proposed system gives information about the design of a GSM based water

billing system. This is achieved by using PIC16F877 and GSM module. This system details the practice for establishing a metering plan to account for usage and loss in the water distribution system. The bill amount will be sent to respective customers. The deployment of the proposed system uses the existing GSM network, where the water meter system can send its readings directly to a server application using a GSM modem. The application itself can notify subscribers of their bills using SMS messages as well.

1. Introduction

At present, most of the houses in India have the Traditional Mechanical Meters and the billing

system is not fully automated. As we all know today’s water billing system involves conventional

method in which a person from respective department Comes and takes the photograph in their

camera. These meter readings are used for water bill calculation and accordingly it is sent to the

consumer’s house by post. Sometimes the Image is not clear, company is unable to send bill to

respective customer or it has to repeat the entire process. An alternative, more practical, solution

consists of reusing existing technologies that are already deployed in other fields, where the results

are promising. The main idea is to customize existing solutions to the context of water billing and

usage management.

In this paper, we propose a system to automate the billing of the consumption of water and the

control of the water meters using a blend of both technologies: GSM networks and embedded

systems. The proposed system consists of three main components:

i. Embedded water meter (E-WATER) system for measurement and control of water consumption.

ii. Server application to manage the measurements and prepare invoices and bills. In addition to that,

the application performs some predefined control operations that can be transmitted to the

embedded water meter.

iii. Communication medium that is based on the existing GSM networks. The water billing and

control operations will be performed simply using the Short Messaging System service that is

available over GSM. For this, no modification or even customization is needed in the networks

themselves.

2. Necessity Of Project

Figure 2.1: Existing System

Limitations of Existing System

There is no limit of usable water.

System is more complex.

Cost of system high.

To overcome these limitations we have discussed the necessity of new system. At present, most of

the houses in India have the traditional mechanical meters and the billing system is not fully

automated. As we all know today’s water billing system involves conventional method in which a

person from respective department comes and takes the photograph in their camera. These meter

readings are used for water bill calculation and accordingly it is sent to the consumer’s house by

post. Sometimes the image is not clear, company is unable to send bill to respective customer or it

has to repeat the entire process. An alternative, more practical, solution consists of reusing existing

technologies that are already deployed in other fields, where the results are promising. The main idea

is to customize existing solutions to the context of water billing and usage management. Main

purpose of the project is to design of billing machine which will provides bill to the consumers

through SMS by using GSM module. A database is created which contains meter number, customer

name, mobile number and previous 3 month’s readings. Validation can also be done to prevent any

malpractices in the existing system.

LCD is used in a project to visualize the output of the application. We have used 16x2 LCD

which indicates 16 columns and 2 rows. So, we can write 16 characters in each line. So, total 32

characters we can display on 16x2 LCD.

LCD can also used in a project to check the output of different modules interfaced with the

microcontroller. Thus LCD plays a vital role in a project to see the output and to debug the

system module wise in case of system failure in order to rectify the problem.

Rs 232:

Rs 232 Is A Serial Communication Cable Used In The System. Here, The Rs 232 Provides The

Serial Communication Between The Microcontroller And The Outside World Such As Display,

Pc Or Mobile Etc. So It Is A Media Used To Communicate Between Microcontroller And The

Pc.

In Our Project The Rs232 Serves The Function To Transfer The Edited Notice (Or Data) From Pc

(Vb Software) To The Microcontroller, For the further operation of the system.

Buzzer: buzzers are used in a system to indicate or to grab the attention regarding an emergency

situation occurred. Buzzer act as a panic horn which indicates the need of instant attention.

GSM Modem:

GSM (Global System for Mobile communication) is a digital mobile telephony system. With

the help of GSM module interfaced; we can send short text messages to the required authorities as

per the application. GSM module is provided by sim uses the mobile service provider and send

SMS to the respective authorities as per programmed. This technology enables the system a

wireless system with no specified range limits. GSM uses a variation of time division multiple

access (TDMA) and is the most widely used of the three digital wireless telephony technologies

(TDMA, GSM, and CDMA). GSM digitizes and compresses data, then sends it down a channel

with two other streams of user data, each in its own time slot. It operates at either the 900 MHz or

1800 MHz frequency band.

PC: We already know about the facility of the mobile, so after receiving data from the GSM

Modem we can copy or use the same data in our PC. The PC and Mobile can be interfaced with

the help of the data cable DKU-50. We are using the VB software in our PC for the user

interface with the system. With the help of this VB software any user can easily make the use of

the system. This VB software provides the notice typing and editing facility. Also we can copy

the same content as received through mobile in the editing window and call it as a notice.

Hence the PC/VB software provides the typing, editing and formatting options to the user.

III. RF Transmitter

This section transmits the binary data to space in a particular range based on the antenna used.

This signal is received by the receiver and it compares the binary code to find the corresponding

station name from the database.

IV. RF Receiver

The RF signal transmitted by the transmitter is detected and received by this section of the

receiver. This binary encoder data is sent to the decoder for decoding the original data. Here we use
