Little Hercules lands ingood hands

Local resident of 41 years, Tammy Szabobecame foster mum to a baby eaglenicknamed Hercules when son Stephen anda mate came across the baby bird out in thescrub at the end of July this year.

Stephen said that there was a large eagle’snest nearby but no sign of any anxiousparents, so because it looked weak and coldhe thought he should take it to his mumand see if she could save it.

Tammy, as any self respecting desert dwellerhas had experience in the past looking aftera baby hawk, cats, dogs and lizards etc.,set to work firstly to positively identify thechick that did turn out to be a wedge tailedeagle, and with a healthy appetite.

With help from friends who enlisted theassistance of Google, Tammy was able towork from a wedge tailed eagle care sheetdowloaded from the Fauna Rescue website.

When the Coober Pedy Regional Timesvisited “Hercules” he was two weeks old.“He weighed nothing at first and fitted insidethe palm of my hand,” said Tammy.

“Now he is a bit bigger he takes up twohands and is starting to hold on to myfinger with his claws”, she said.

So what is the future for Hercules beinga rescue eagle?

Tammy found that the Department ofEnvironment (DEWR) in South Australiahas guidelines and laws that coverednative fauna. This is when Tammyrealised that Hercules would need to beraised in a specialised environment.

Hercules’ future would undoubtedly bein a wildlife sanctuary. At least he ishaving a second chance due largely tothe kindest afforded him by Tammy andher son Stephen.

Since catching up with Tammy, Herculeshas been transferred to a specialisedraptor foster carer in Adelaide where hewill receive ongoing care until he finds apermanent home at a suitable wildlifesanctuary.

With one in four Australian adults livingwith bladder or bowel control problems, incontinence is fast becoming one of ournation’s biggest and costliest health issues.

Incontinence is more prevalent thananxiety, asthma and arthritis, yet continuesto fly under the radar because of the stigmaaround the issue.

The Continence Foundation of Australia istaking steps to reverse this by offering localcommunity health organisations grants ofup to $1500 for education and awarenessevents.

Continence Foundation chief executiveBarry Cahill said the events would increaseawareness of continence problems andshow people where to go for help.

“In the majority of cases continence canbe prevented, better managed, and in manycases, cured,” Mr Cahill said.

The Continence Foundation has alreadyawarded 17grants of up to $1500 to

community health organisations this year, with events ranging from open days toMen’s Shed forums, from health andwellness expos to information evenings.

“We would love to see more organisationstaking up the mantle of health promotionin this area. Education on a local level isincredibly effective and shown to havelong-lasting effects on future health seekingbehaviours,” Mr Cahill said.

“People who attended some of these pastevents went on to phone our free, confidential National Continence Helplineand spoke with a continence nurse for thefirst time about their problem. They mightnot have known about the Helpline or hadthe courage to seek help had they not hadthat initial nudge in the right direction dueto these sorts of community events.”

Applications open from August 31 untilOctober 4. For details, go tocontinence.org.au or phone the NationalContinence Helpline on 1800 33 00 66.

The 2015 Coober Pedy races saw the return of thestarting gates for the race horse events, great

crowd participation and a successful weekend washad by all who attended and participated.

This year’s crowd seemed to be larger than in recentyears and it was great to see so many locals make theeffort to support such a traditional Coober Pedy eventduring the centenary year.

Due to the reintroduction of the starting gates and racelengths extended to more traditional distances, a greatervariety of race horses were attracted this year.

The highlight for many a race goer was the Opal Inn Cupon the Saturday, being run over 1700m, instead of lastyear’s 1000m, spectators got to see the jump out of thegates up close and personal. The race started at the startof the straight and proceeded for the entire length of thetrack, passing the spectators once again as they closed inon the finish line.

Sunday also saw the Tony Wong Ladies Bracelet extendedto 1200m.

Gymkhana participants, both motor cycle and horse, werewell represented and provided plenty of competition andentertainment as always. Good numbers in both disciplinesmeant most events were heavily contested and veryentertaining, with a great mix of local and out of townentrants.

The traditional novelty events were engaging andentertaining, the kid’s participation in particular was greatto see. As always the money scramble was a highlight, together with the jumping castles, RICE activities and ChildCommunity Links programs the kids had a great weekend.

Thanks must go to everyone who helped over theweekend, especially the dedicated bunch of committeemembers who quietly contribute to the events successyear after year. A special mention must also go to all whocontributed to the variety of food and goodies availableduring the weekend, these were well received and verymuch appreciated.

Thanks must also go to the KupiKupi Coober Pedy GlidingClub for running the popular courtesy bus. They did agreat job promoting the event to tourists visiting CooberPedy for the weekend. Thanks to Les Pullen on the watertruck, impromptu photo finish photographer and generalhelper, Eddie Nunn for his assistance with running thegymkhana events.

The success of an event such as this relies heavily on allinvolved and is measured in a number of ways. Thecommittee are dedicated to providing an event which notonly provides a social occasion, with healthy familyparticipation and competition but also creates a traditionalfund raising opportunity. Profits are always donated tocommunity projects, groups and charities, over $36,000in the last six years! This success is only possible throughcommunity participation and for that the committee extenda huge thank you to all who attend and contribute to theRace Clubs success.

Facebook users are driving an increase in socialmedia defamation enquiries to Australia’s leading

consumer law firm, new figures show.

Almost half (48 per cent)* of defamation enquiries receivedby Slater and Gordon in the last financial year were aboutmaterial posted on social media. Most of those enquires(43 per cent) related to Facebook posts.

Slater and Gordon defamation lawyer Jeremy Zimet saidsocial media was changing the landscape of defamationin Australia.

“The internet has created a new class of publishers –ordinary, everyday people who are posting commentsabout each other on public forums,” Mr Zimet said.

“As a result, we are seeing more defamatory material beingpublished on social media platforms, including Facebookand Twitter, and a new wave of social media defamationcases arising,” he said.

The top four social media defamation enquiries at Slaterand Gordon are:

FacebookTwitterInstagramGeneral internet

Mr Zimet said Slater and Gordon’s recent social mediadefamation court cases included a person who wasaccused of serious criminal offences on Facebook and aperson who was allegedly defamed on an internet blog.

He said recent court decisions had confirmed thatdefamation does extend to social media and, when proven, courts would award damages.

“Last year a NSW teenager was ordered to pay his formerteacher $105,000 for defaming her on Twitter, and thisyear, in WA, a woman had to pay her ex-husband $12,500after she posted damaging allegations against him onFacebook.

“Not all social media defamation enquiries we receive willresult in defamation proceedings being issued, asdefamation is a complex area of law.

“In some cases, taking down a defamatory post andissuing an apology may be enough to prevent a personfrom taking legal action.”

Chamberlain tractor convoyrolls into Coober Pedy

More about the Chamberlain TractorThe Chamberlain ‘Champion’ tractor was manufacturedin the Chamberlain Welshpool factory (in WesternAustralia), commencing in 1955 with the first modelhaving 6 gears (6G). In 1958 the model 9G was introducedand production continued until 1966 with 8165 units havingrolled off the assembly line.

The first Champion 6G produced became a participant asa sweep vehicle in the 1955 and 1956 Redex Trials whenit travelled with the competitors from Darwin to Perth.

Whereas the standard model has a top speed of 50kph,this particular unit was capable of reaching 100kph. The1957 Mobilgas Round Australia Rally again saw theChamberlain Tractor, now affectionately nicknamed ‘TailEnd Charlie’, participating for the full distance of 18,000kilometers in just 19 days. This included renderingassistance and towing damaged competitors’ cars to thenearest town or checkpoint and completing the Rally withthe balance of the competitors.

They are ideally suited to their new role of being arecreational vehicle so it’s no wonder there are now inexcess of 40 restored 9G’s in the Club.

Last Friday saw a party of around 20 Tractors(many towing caravans) from the Chamberlain G9

Clubs in WA and the East Coast converge onCoober Pedy enroute to the Transport Hall of Fame

being held in Northern Territory next week.

Long term associate of the South Australian region GeorgeBaldwin of Smoky Bay Tractors & 4WD Dismantlers ledthe procession into town where they settled down fortwo nights at the Oasis Tourist Park.

“The tractors have driven from all states”, said GeorgeBaldwin. “The WA contingency met up with us at SmokyBay and we travelled to Coober Pedy together. The EastCoast members linked up with others and we all arrivedhere together,” he said.

“Before we move onto Alice Springs next week we willvisit Oodnadatta, Dalhousie and Mt Dare,” said George.

The Chamberlain 9G Tractor Club members are renownfor their fundraising efforts for the Royal Children’sHospital and The Royal Flying Doctor Service.

In 2005 George Baldwin drove his tractor from SmokyBay to personally deliver a blood pressure monitor to theCoober Pedy Hospital, purchased from funds raised inCoober Pedy on the previous year’s fundrasing tour.

George Russell owner operator of the Family Parks OasisTourist Park in Coober Pedy said, “It was a pleasure tohost the Chamberlain Tractor Tour this year and to meettheir owners from all over Australia.”

“It was pleasing to know that the group, all from countryareas used their trip and time to raise funds for the RFDS(Royal Flying Doctor Service)”, he said.

The Chamberlain Tractor Club made a similar trip in 2010when their treking destination was Birdsville.

According to club notes the Chamberlain tractor doublesas a recreational vehicle.

WA club member Ross Smith said, “Most of the tractorshave had their motors done up. They hop along prettyfast these days. Amongst the group there are a numberof 6G tractors as well as the 9Gs,” he said. (G=Gears)

The 9G Chamberlain tractor was the famous workhorseof the late 50’s and 60’s, and was designed and built inWestern Australia. These machines, which are capable ofa relatively high speed ( 50 km/h ), can be madecomfortable to drive, and of course have a proven reliabilityover a long period of time.

These tractors can traverse rock, mud, sand and relativelydeep water. They have a reputation of being a “goanywhere Machine”.

Bill and Helen Taylor of Cunderdin in WA had theoldest tractor on the tour. Their 6G ChamberlainChampion was built between 1955 and 1956.“The original motor threw a leg out of bed andhas since been replaced,” said Bill.

Sunday morning saw a procession of Chamberlainsleaving the Oasis and heading off along 17 MileRoad and then out towards Oodnadatta on the nextleg of their journey

The roar of tractor engines filled the air as the convoy departed for Oodnadatta, 200 kmNorth East of Coober Pedy, an all dirt road.

PUBLIC NOTICE

South Australians are encouraged to makea difference in a vulnerable young person’slife by becoming a foster carer, as the statekicks off a week of events to recognisethe contribution of our State’s foster andkinship carers.

Education and Child Development MinisterSusan Close said SA’s Foster and KinshipCarer Week is an opportunity to recognisethe positive difference foster and kinshipcarers make in a young person’s life andalso to encourage others to come forwardto take up the role.

“Foster and kinship carers are thefoundation of the child protection systemand we owe them a substantial debt ofgratitude.

“In South Australia there are nearly 3,000children and young people who for onereason or another have had to be removedfrom the care of their parents.

“We would love to be able to place thesechildren in a home environment to givethem the best opportunity in life.

“The number of foster and kinship carershas remained relatively steady over theyears even as we’ve seen an increase inthe number of children who needalternative care placements.

“Offering vulnerable young people a safe, stable home environment is a big ask, butis one of the most compassionate thingsanyone can do, and the difference a fostercarer can make to a vulnerable child isinvaluable.

“I have seen numerous examples wherethrough the care and support of a dedicatedfoster or kinship carer, a vulnerable youngperson from a difficult background has beengiven and taken the chance to succeed.

“I strongly encourage anyone who feelsable to open their home to a vulnerable childto contact one of South Australia’s fostercare agencies.”

At the launch of AnglicareSA’s ‘Anyone canbe a hero to a child’ campaign, Dr Closesaid the week was also an opportunity torecognise the pivotal contribution of non-government agencies in recruiting andsupporting foster and kinship carers.

“We rely heavily on the support of ourpartners in the non-government sector whodo tremendous work in recruiting andassisting foster and kinship carers to carefor vulnerable young people,” she said.

past two years. Over $4,000 has beencollected through your efforts. Thank youto Colin, Carol, Bob and Rhonda whocontinue to donate.

The money is dedicated to Stage 2 of therenovation project – the canteen. Currentlyfood and drinks are being offered for saleby vendors with their own transportableequipment. Christel also sells drinks andpackaged snacks. Drive-in CommitteeChairperson Trevor Gotte is hoping tomeet with the new CEO Trent Rusby thismonth to discuss the project. Donutlovers, especially, are keen to see progresswith the canteen.

People are also asking for a canteen breakduring the movie. In the days of filmprojectors, the intermission came when theprojectionists changed from one reel toanother. Film projectors could be stoppedand started any time. Unfortunately digitalfilm contracts are not so flexible.Projectionists have to adhere to strictguidelines, which mean no stopping andstarting mid movie.

A special thank you to Sonya Lorenz whoset up the Drive-in website and managedit so well even after she left Coober Pedy.

Charlie Paris, Dog Reporter([email protected])

When I was a puppy, I thought I knew everything. Ihad my life planned out. I was going to be a career

dog and be rich and famous. There was no timefor boydog friends, my job always came first.

I did have my admirers! There was Ralph, a delightfullittle brown dog that never forgot my birthday or Valentinesday. He showered me with gifts of dog treats and hismum made me a lovely big fluffy cushion for two. Therewas talk of an engagement, however I was only one yearold. With my whole life ahead of me, and not wanting toleave my mum and dad’s house we decided to wait awhile. Ralph moved away and we lost contact.

That’s OK I throw myself into my work and Coober Pedyevents. I missed Ralph for a long time, until I saw thefilm RED DOG. I have never been a follower of film stars, but this time I was smitten. What a good looking dog,my heart would miss a beat when I saw a photo of him.In my head I was planning the wedding of the century, and still I had never met him.

The Opal Festival was coming up, so I wrote to him tosee if he would sit on the back of my float. Red Dog is abusy dog, so he sent his body double. This Big Red Dogturned up at my door. I was surprised that he was so talland so red. He was a happy big red dog that played withthe children and gave out the treats on that day. He saidhe had fallen in love with Coober Pedy and he wouldcome back any time I needed him. That’s just what hehas done. His has been involved with the Christmas toyrun for many years and many other events. We are goodfriends, but he doesn’t make my legs go weak at the knees.

I did meet the real Red Dog, he is indeed a good lookingdog. With all his good looks and muscles we didn’t haveanything in common. He spent a lot of time looking in themirror and he didn’t even do his own stunts.

Again I threw myself back into my work.

Woof WoofCharlie Paris ([email protected])

My mum and dad met at the bar at the Italian Club. That’snot for me; I don’t think they could see me at the bar, I’mtoo short. What would I order and still look sophisticated,“A clean bowl of water, please”!

A few friends said they advertised to meet people. Onegirl friend put an ad in the paper and had 49 men apply tomeet her. She had a date with all of them over severalmonths. She is still looking.

One other friend put an ad in the paper and met his futurewife. Mum has a cousin that was part of the first farmerwants a wife. He didn’t get into the TV show, howeverthe Women’s Weekly did a story on all the men that applied. He had a few women write to him, He picked one towrite back to, they are now married and have a beautifullittle girl.

...So here it goes....

Before I can start a relationship with any dog I need toknow what I want from the relationship.

Mutual respect is the keystone to any healthy relationship.

If I commit to anyone it is for the long haul. Commongoals in life and family values are important. One of ourfamily values is not to chase the cats. I need a dog thatcan make me laugh every day and have old fashionedfamily fun. That sort of fun sometimes involves chasingthe cats when no one is looking.

The experts say that opposites attract, but if you marrysomeone like you it is far more than attraction, it is a lifetime deal. The experts also say, never expect your partnerto change. Think about if they wanted you to change, how long could you do it for? How happy would you benot being you? The trick is to find someone that youdon’t want to change.

Friendship is as important as love, but you need to makeboth work in a relationship.

You need a partner who will work with you.

Now that that I am 7 ½ years old. I think I am matureenough to be in a relationship. Unlike when I was a puppyand thought I knew it all, at least now I have an idea ofwho I am and my expectations of life.

I was never rich or famous and as it turns out that is justthe way I like it. Family values are all that matter to me.

Love is in the Air
