The Wendy’s Company

Wendy’s is one of the world’s largest restaurant operating companies and distinguished by traditions of quality food and operational excellence. The Company, with approximately $9 billion in system-wide sales, owns or franchises more than 6,500 restaurants in 26 countries and territories. Wendy's International division, based in Atlanta, GA, oversees operations and the ongoing development of the Wendy's brand outside of the U.S. and Canada.

International Growth

New market expansion and continued development within existing markets will continue to be dominant drivers of Wendy’s global strategy over the years to come. Over the past three years, we have aggressively laid the groundwork for international expansion with new restaurant development announcements in Singapore, the Middle East and North Africa, the Russian Federation, the Eastern Caribbean, Argentina, the Philippines and Japan.

Introduction

Our great brand is distinguished by more than 40 years of great quality food and service. We have the potential for more than 8,000 restaurants outside of North America, so we’re incredibly excited about our international growth opportunities. And, with the help of new and existing franchisees, we look forward to significant global expansion.”

Our History

Wendy’s founder Dave Thomas

Built on Quality

Since Dave Thomas opened the first Wendy’s restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in 1969, our brand has been associated with high-quality food made with the freshest ingredients and served the way the customer wants. Dave’s promise to not “cut corners” is the reason why our burgers are square. In fact, quality was so important to Dave that he even put the phrase “Quality is our Recipe” on our logo. Today, that passion for quality remains our number one priority at every Wendy’s restaurant around the world and continues to drive our success and differentiate us from our competitors within the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) category.

Our commitment to quality and superior customer service has fueled growth and shaped the QSR industry. Wendy’s created the first Pick-Up Window, and was the first QSR to offer salads and a value menu -- not to mention the great advances we have made in restaurant operations, store designs, supply chain management, and new technology. This entrepreneurial spirit is an important part of our history and continues to be an intrinsic part of who we are at Wendy’s today.

Our Industry

Wendy's is a restaurant operating company positioned in the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) category. Like most industries, the restaurant industry has experienced both competitive and economic challenges over recent years. Regardless, the QSR category has continued to grow significantly -- especially in emerging markets. According to Euromonitor International, this trend of category growth is expected to continue, as shown in the information below.

Wendy’s operates primarily in the burger and chicken QSR segments, which combined represent nearly 40% of the total QSR market and continue to grow internationally. We believe that we are well-positioned and have the brand power and infrastructure necessary to capitalize on this growth and expand our international presence.

A Growing Global Presence

There are more than 6,500 Wendy’s restaurants currently in operation in 26 countries and territories worldwide. Since January 2009, we have aggressively laid the groundwork for international expansion of Wendy’s with new restaurant development announcements in Singapore, the Middle East and North Africa, the Russian Federation, the Eastern Caribbean, Argentina, the Philippines and Japan. We are targeting expansion to over 8,000 Wendy’s restaurants outside of North America.

The Real Choice in Fast Food...Worldwide

Whether you visit Wendy’s in Dubai, Moscow, or the island of Puerto Rico, it is clear that Wendy’s stands apart from the competition by maintaining superior quality, freshness, and operational standards worldwide. Most importantly, our customers understand what’s Real about us -- it’s the Grade-A milk and real cocoa that goes into our original Frosty, the way we slow-simmer our savory chili for at least four hours before serving, and how we make each of our hot and juicy hamburgers to order and serve them from the grill to the bun. In 2010 and 2011, Wendy’s was recognized by Zagat Survey as the food quality leader in the US quick service restaurant industry, and also received their “Top Overall” designation. Internationally, the story is the same. For example, in New Zealand Wendy’s has been voted as having the best tasting hamburgers for over ten years in a row.

Our Franchising Philosophy

More Than Just Franchisees

We know that our brand’s success and reputation is directly tied to those of our franchisees. Our early franchisees played a vital role in moving the business forward, protecting the brand's reputation, and making a difference in the communities where we live and work. Today's franchisees are just as important. They are talented business people who are committed to the success of their locations and well-being of their employees, customers, and community. They are experienced restaurant operators with high operational standards, a commitment to training and development, and are good stewards of the brand. Most of all, they are passionate about food, the restaurant industry, and the Wendy’s brand. After all, they are responsible for carrying on the legacy that we have built over the past 40+ years, and are a critical part of securing its future.

As a franchisor and restaurant operator, we understand the significant level of capital investment and time that is required to support the successful operation of a network of restaurants. That’s why we will provide guidance throughout the planning process, in the development of your first restaurant, and in the on-going operation thereafter.

What We Look ForOwning and operating a network of Wendy’s restaurants in a new market is both an exciting and challenging prospect. Each year Wendy‘s receives thousands of inquiries and applications for franchises, but only the most qualified are ultimately granted rights to develop Wendy’s restaurants. All current Wendy’s franchisees outside of North America are multi-unit developers, with most operating under licenses to develop the full market or territories in which they operate. We do not consider or grant rights for single-unit franchise development in any international market at this time.

Qualications

While specific requirements will vary from country to country, at a minimum, qualified franchise candidates will typically have:

• A passion for food and restaurant operations

• Comprehensive understanding of local culture, infrastructure, and how to do business in the market of interest

• Demonstrated business success with multi-unit restaurant, retail, or hospitality sector operations. Previous franchising experience is a plus.

• Sufficient liquid assets and capital to support the growth of a network of restaurants at a pace necessary to create a visible presence, support a sustained advertising program, and allow for economies of scale in the geographic area of interest. Capacity and willingness to develop whole territories is strongly preferred. • Access to and experience in developing real estate • Existing business infrastructure to leverage in the operation and management of your network of Wendy’s restaurants • Ability to commit to an aggressive store development schedule

“When Kopitiam Group opened its first restaurant in Singapore, the professional support we received from Wendy's in engineering, operations, marketing, supply chain, and quality assurance helped to ensure a smooth start for our business. Wendy’s support is especially important to us as a new operator in the Quick Service Restaurant industry. We are confident that Wendy's will be very successful in Singapore, and proud to be a member of the Wendy's family.”

“We have been associated with the Wendy’s brand as a franchisee for over thirty years. During this time, we have grown our business to 70+ restaurants with annual revenues in excess of $125 million dollars (US). It has been a relationship that we would not change in any respect.

The Wendy’s brand is one built around two key components: quality and great people. These two components are the perfect combination for a successful business platform.

Our customers have recognized Wendy’s as a quality product and we have been able to deliver superior service because of the support provided to us by the Wendy’s international team. This has yielded us extraordinary results for which I am grateful.

We are associated with other brands, but without doubt, none exceed Wendy's level of support. Because of this relationship, Wendy’s will continue to be our preferred and most profitable investment.”
