1. Introduction: Fundación CARTIF, who are we?
Location
Parque Tecnológico de Boecillo, 205, 47151 Boecillo, Valladolid (Spain)
Ph nº: +34-983-548818 Fax nº: +34-983-546521 Web page: http://www.cartif.com/index.php/en.html
We are a technological centre devoted
to applied research, technological
development and innovation of
processes, products and systems
2. Current Problematic of Critical Raw Materials
China dominates the international market of Rare
Earths (REs) or critical raw materials because they
control exports.
This problem began in the 80s when China reducing
the international market participation of other
production companies.
This information was contrasted by the EU which
considered this group of minerals as critical because
overcome safety limits established considering its
importance and the supply and environmental risk.
2. Current Problematic of Critical Raw Materials
The EU is completely dependent on imports, China
accounting for 97% of world production with about 30%
of the reserves.
No recycling or substitution processes for Rare Earths
(REs) are currently commercially viable.
3. Incorporation of CARTIF to PROMETIA
CARTIF became part of PROMETIA Network in April of
2015.
The main objective of CARTIF is to collaborate and
promote innovation in mineral processing and
extractive metallurgy for mining and recycling of raw
materials.
4. Participation of CARTIF in Critical Raw Material proposals
CARTIF collaborated in the CSA MSP-REFRAM
proposal. The MSP-REFRAM proposal has been
submitted to the H2020-WASTE 4d call on 21 April
2015.
In September CARTIF will participate in FAST TRACK
TO INNOVATION PLANT (HORIZON 2020 WORK
PROGRAMME 2014-2015).
5. CARTIF III Building
CARTIF has a building for installing Pilot Plants.
More than 4,000 m2 of floor space to implement
industrial and laboratory equipment as well as new
facilities.
Nowadays CARTIF has three Pilot Plants and grinding
equipment.
In the future CARTIF is going to implement a laboratory
for minerals’ characterization.
6. CARTIF Laboratory Equipment. SEM and ICP-MS
SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy).
The SEM is used to analyze the morphology of all kind of
solid materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, biological,
etc.), but not liquid samples.
6. CARTIF Laboratory Equipment. SEM and ICP-MS
ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass
Spectrometry)
This equipment is essential to obtain “metal laws” in
liquid samples.
