UN Millenium Declaration: to halve the proportion of people líving in poverty by 2015: crucial role of energy access while preserving the climate

Johannesburg WSSD 2002: „... With a sense of urgency, [to] substantially increase the global share of renewable energy sources ...“; but no timetables and targets

Commitment to go a step beyond the Johannesburg Action Plan by JREC („Johannesburg Renewable Energy Coalition“): more then 80 liked-minded countries supported the idea of adopting clear and ambitious time bound targets for the increase of renewable energies

Aims of the Conference

Defining the role of renewables in the context of sustainable development and balance this with the need to improve energy efficiency

Assessing best practices for the promotion of renewables including the concept of setting political targets for the future share of renewable energies and favourable framework conditions for progress in this field

Adressing international financial and other initiatives for the promotion of and investment in renewables in developing countries; this is of particular importance in relation to international financial institutions and the involvement of private capital

Individual or joint actions to promote RE by governments, organisations/institutions or enterprises;

International action plan, including monitoring, reviewing

Guidance for good policy: benchmarks, lessons learned from cases, goodgoivernance,

Agreeing on a long-term follow-up process for the implementation of the action plan
