The value of a mega- event is determined by the success of the event in its own right, in terms of what the event does for the hosting country or city and whether the host location is left better off than before the event. Looking back at past events, it is clear that successful events strategies varied according to the set of circumstances influencing the host’s unique development goals. It becomes evident that the local organising committee of a mega-event and its supporting network are indeed challenged to realise a net benefit for the social, economic, natural and cultural dimensions of the host country. The colloquium reviews the "what, why and how?”-issues embedded in hosting and managing mega-events. The ultimate aim is to answer what a developing country, like South Africa, should take into account to secure a great mega-vent legacy. Mega-events are critically positioned in the marketing, decision-making and strategy development of tourism destinations. The value of a mega-event is determined by the success of the event in its own right, in terms of what the event does for the hosting country or city and whether the host location is left better off than before the event.

Participants will benefit from the experiences of international and South African organisers and researchers who have lived the conceptual and practical realities of mega-events.
