T he dog days of summer are rolling past us, and we’re preparing for fall, or at least we will be soon. Back to school prepara-tions, pre-holiday plans taking shape,

family reunions and vacations. It’s been a busy summer for us all. On my trip back from the EFAM (Education Forum & Annual Meeting), I was fortu-nate enough to fly over the Cascade mountain range—after all, I was taking a detour through Seattle. Strange as it may seem, I must admit looking down at something so majestic brought the analytic side of my brain alive. It’s amaz-ing. When we’re looking down from such a height, it doesn’t look like such a daunting task to cross the highest peaks or the lowest valleys. Yet when we are in the midst of the valleys, we see no way out, or on the peaks, it doesn’t seem so hard to get there. The same is true of our chapter. This year will hold many peaks and valleys, hard tasks and joyous celebrations, but together we will make it through and see the other side. The journey is not to reach a destination, but rather to find the joy in each journey. We held our first Board of Directors retreat August 15. We dis-cussed the coming year, succession planning, committee goals, chapter goals, suggestions, and various changes. This year will be a year of strengthening our foundation. Some of our changes will include various fundraising opportunities, the newsletter, cost of dinner and our monthly programs, membership recruitment and re-tention, focus on certification, and continuation of the “Pathways to Excellence” program. There is much excitement and hope as we start the 2009-2010 year. Our future is bright, but it starts with you. Each of us has a part to play. Active participation, even in a small way, promises each of us a new and unique adventure. I know many of you are concerned with the dues increase com-ing in January. If you are interested in your options, please read the section in the newsletter regarding the dues increase and the choices available to you. If you have any questions, I am more than happy to help you. The same goes for the Member of Excellence program or any other concerns you may have. We will be conducting an effectiveness survey for our members yet again this year. For any surveys we conduct during the year ,all results will be posted in the newsletter and online on our new web-site. Please take a look at our website for updated information and newsbites. We think you will enjoy the user friendly atmosphere and new look. www.orgsites.com/co/iaap-denver. Mel

RETIREMENT TRUST FOUNDATION

W hile going over the membership num-

bers for our annual report, I dis-covered that we have lost 14 members this year. My first thought was, “Was it something I said?” and with that I could hear the ever present voice of my mother saying, “Your smart mouth is going to get you in trouble someday.” Then I won-dered if it was some-thing I did-n’t say or do. Maybe it was some-thing as a chapter we didn’t do or provide. I would like to challenge each of you to think back to your first few visits to a Denver Chapter meeting. What made you want to come back? Was it the friendly welcome of a chap-ter member who took you under their wing, the program, or maybe it was participating on a committee? Can we count on you to encourage a new member to continue coming by welcom-ing them, or inviting them to participate on a committee with you, or giving them a call and inviting them back? (I have con-tact information if you need it). Is there a face you haven’t seen in a while? Maybe it was the person who sponsored you or welcomed you to a chapter meeting. Give them a call and invite them back; we all need a little encouragement from time

to time. We have 52 members and an average attendance of 17 chapter members at each meet-ing. Wouldn’t it be great if we could bring that average up to well over half this year? If you are reading this and haven’t attended a meeting in a while, or have never attended, ask yourself why. What would it take to get you to come to a

meeting? Maybe you don’t want to come be-cause you don’t know anyone. Invite a friend/fellow ad-

ministrative professional to come with you; you could be opening up a new career enhanc-ing opportunity for them. We have a whole new Board of Di-rectors and exciting new pro-grams for you to experience. If you have ideas for change or new program ideas, come to a meeting and share them with us. If you have concerns or sugges-tions, please contact one of the board members or me at [email protected] . Remem-ber— you paid for your mem-bership—it’s time to get what you paid for. We are on a fantastic journey together. A journey that will enhance our careers, develop mentors and friendships, and promises to be a fun ride. Let’s not leave anyone behind!

T his month’s word pair, set and sit, are prime examples of how a little vocal inflection can change a meaning. Both words are

verbs having to do with movement, but the meanings have that little difference so common in English. First, the word sit is intransitive, meaning it does not take a direct object. True, there are usually other words following, as is in the sentence, “Please sit in the hall while we discuss the matter.” But you could say “Please sit.” and still convey a complete thought. On the other hand, the word set is transitive and needs a direct object to complete its meaning, as in the sentence, “Won’t you set your books over there?” It wouldn’t make sense to say “Won’t you set?” That “sentence” prompts more questions—”Won’t I set what...and where?”—instead of conveying a complete thought. Just remember, use the word set when something is being placed somewhere, and use the word sit when people are placing themselves somwwhere..in a chair, at a desk, on the patio, and so on.

WORD PAIR OF THE MONTH Set, sit

THE ONE-MINUTE TIP

High achievers are good at “dancing on the edge” and react appropriately when Reactive thinking is needed. They quickly recognize and adopt great new ideas, while instantly responding to threats. They are effective Manage-rial thinkers who run their lives with grace and style. And they know where they are going, what’s important, and what they believe because they take time for Strategic thinking. Winners balance all three types of thinking. So should you. Get good at this.

When you are shopping for meeting venues, staffing services, or other services, be sure to sup-port our Associate Member companies!

W ow! What a great trip to Minnea-polis. As some of you may know, in order to save on expenses for the Chapter, I volunteered on the host

committee. That was an experience in itself. I had many opportunities to network with others and have many names and connections for ideas and best practices. I look forward to implementing them in the next year. They were short on volun-teers so I didn’t make it to the seminars but I did collect many of the handouts which I will list at the end of this report. I have permission to make as many copies of these as we need to in order to bring some of the information to the chapter. Please let me know if you are interested in these so I can distribute them to you. On to the business at hand: International Con-vention is now called the Educational Forum and Annual Meeting (EFAM). The theme of the EFAM this year was “The Administrative Edge”. The educational seminars took center stage as they were increased and the delegate briefings and busi-ness sessions were minimized to less than two days however, much was accomplished in those ses-sions. The business session convened at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 26th. Registered attendees as of 8:30 a.m. numbered 1,080. On this day we prepared for elections of officers and trustees which were held on Monday morning. Nominations from the floor took place followed by speeches from those vying for positions where there were more than one candidate. International President, Barb Horton CAP, ad-dressed the issues facing the association and the changes that took place this past year. • Strategic change – a new platform for the fu-

ture of the IAAP • Redefined the mission statement and core val-

ues • Web community implementations and provider

changes • Implementation of online sign up system • Updated the manual – policies and procedures

The Avery Awards were handed out and the official invitation to the Evening of Welcome was given. Hallmark is a new sponsor for IAAP and intro-duced their “Red Organization” which is a Global Fund aimed at helping other nations get on their feet. At the evening of welcome each attendee was given a Mali mud bag full of snacks and other promotional items. The bag itself retails at Hall-mark for $24.95. The session adjourned at 10:55 a.m. followed by a Town Hall meeting which was used to discuss the proposed dues increase, changes at Headquar-ters and other issues/items. The IMPACT meet-ings are being done away with and replaced by recruitment efforts in October and April. New member packets will now be sent electronically instead of via postal mail. Other items were also discussed but more information on them will be forthcoming. As always, I will keep you informed. Chairmen of affected committees will get more detailed information on the aforementioned changes. I attended the District Caucus and was pleased to see such a great turnout. Many topics were dis-cussed, including debate and questions on the pro-posed dues increase, of course, along with miscel-laneous awards, certificates and recognition of pre-vious officers, etc. There were many Chapters of Excellence in our Division. The business session reconvened on Monday, July 27th at 3:12 p.m. As of 2:00 p.m. on Monday the number of registered attendees was 1,284. The results of the election were declared. Hynes Convention Center and the Sheraton-Boston)

The session was adjourned at 6:40 p.m. On Tuesday, July 28th, the keynote speaker, Warren Evans CSP, gave an inspiring presentation about change, the administrative profession, the current career climate, and of course referenced his book, The Future: Take It or Make It. I purchased a copy and recommend it as it is a fast read and is both informative and encouraging. After a short break, Executive Director, Don Bretthauer CAE, gave the State of the Profession. Admins have always done more with less, are more resilient in changing environments, are more flexi-ble and adapt well to the future. Registration for EFAM was down 33% from previous years. Head-quarters staff are focusing on efficiency and in-creasing customer service.

The Office Expo brought new vendors and products (office supplies and other admin “toys”). It was smaller this year than previously, but very informative nonetheless. All-in-all, the EFAM was yet another wonderful experience with IAAP. As I suggested last year, I urge all of you to make at least one trip to the EFAM if you have not already. 2010 in Boston promises to be a historic and enlightening event.
