SDGs – a global yardstick with global dimensions:

• Universal agenda, valid for all

countries

• 17 common goals, 169 common

targets, common indicators

• Challenges that require global,

cross-border solutions

• Cross-country comparisons and

periodic reviews at the

international level

Strong public backing, but will the SDGs get

lost in translation?

83% of Swiss population

support development aid…

… to secure a sustainable future for all

… to show solidarity with the world’s poor

But:

• 2030 Agenda is not legally

binding for national strategies

on sustainability

• National monitoring

mechanisms defined by

national indicators and

measurements

• SDGs need to be adapted to

country-specific circumstances

• SDGs are not very clear

Out of the 169 targets, 49 (29%) are considered well developed,

120 targets (71%) could either be strengthened by being more

specific or require significant work.

doing ( Baseline Report)

3. Identify gaps and actions

( Gap Analysis and

Recommendations)

SDG implementation nationally and internationally:

• National: Goals that Switzerland intends to realize in Switzerland

• International: Goals that Switzerland supports with contributions abroad

• Key challenge:

• SDG implementation is a project for all of Switzerland,

not just the Swiss government

Key questions for discussion

• How do you turn a government-led SDG process to a broad-based SDG

movement?

• How do you incorporate stakeholder contributions in the implementation of

the SDGs?

• How do you ensure policy coherence between domestic and international

policies (e.g. trade policy, migration, domestic tax incentives, etc.)?

• What are effective Whole-of-Government communications strategies?

• How are international development priorities addressed in SDG

communications at the national level?

• How can we benefit from peer-to-peer learnig networks such as DevCom?
