Data centers are sensitive areas which consume a huge amount of

energy and have changing requirements. They house servers containing

large amounts of data. Ensuring they are flexible, efficient and reliable

thus means implementing a durable infrastructure which provides high

performance under all circumstances.

There are four main objectives for providing an optimum response to the

specific issues and requirements of data centers.

Optimize energy efficiency

Data centers consume a great deal ofenergy. The aim will therefore be toreduce their carbon footprint. How?By improving the PUE (Power UsageEffectiveness). This is an indicatorwhich defines the energy efficiency ofa data center by calculating the ratioof the total energy consumed by thedata center as a whole to that actuallyconsumed by the IT systems which thedata center operates.

OBJECTIVE: REDUCE THE PUE

The PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness) is anindicator for measuring the energy efficien-cy of a data center by working out the ratioof the total consumption of the data centerto that of the computer and telecoms (IT)equipment. The ISO/IEC 30134-2:2016“Information technology -- Data centres-- Key performance indicators -- Part 2:Power usage effectiveness (PUE)” standarddefines several PUE categories:

Basic PUE (Category 1)

This measurement stipulates the conver-sion of all measurements into kilowatt-hour(kWh). It is a precise method includingenergy sources other than mains electricity.PUE1 is calculated over a 12-month period.

Intermediate PUE (Category 2)

This measurement includes the category1 requirements. However the IT consump-tion is measured at the PDUs (PowerDistribution Units). A clear distinction istherefore made between the infrastructureand the IT equipment and it is easier tomeasure a pPUE (partial PUE).

Advanced PUE (Category 3)

This measurement includes the category2 requirements. It refines them by requir-ing the IT consumption to be measured atdevice level. A data center with optimum ef-ficiency will be PUE 1, whereas the averageglobal PUE of a data center is between 1.8and 1.89 (source: Uptime Institute survey2012). Reducing this is therefore a priorityin order to ensure that the infrastructureprovides ever-higher performance.

Optimization of the cold air circuitThough the airflow optimization in the rackis often not fully or effectively implemented,it is the next step in energy-efficient datacenters. THE LEGRAND ADVANTA

“MINKELS’ FREE STANDINGCORRIDOR”

The Free Standing Corridor is a fully self-supporting aisle containment systemthanks to which closed-off aisles can becreated independently from the IT racks,which is not usual in the data centermarket. Its modular design consistsof a self-supporting construction, wallpanels, roof panels and sliding doors.Immediately after implementation, theenergy efficiency reached is the sameas that of a regular aisle containmentsystem supported by IT racks. The FreeStanding Corridor offers corporate andcommercial data centers a cost-efficient“pay-as-you-grow” solution in order tocreate energy efficiency at low initialinvestments (CAPEX).



SEPARATION OF HOT AND COLD AIR

In addition to simply separating the hot/coldair flows by creating dedicated aisles, the coldaisle containment enables the aisles to becontained for optimized cooling.

The hot air and cold air are separated whenthe room is designed, using roofs, panels anddoors (at the entrance and exit). This veryeffectively reduces the energy consumptionof the air conditioning units (visible reduc-tion via the air conditioning unit consumptionreports). The cold aisle containment providesan average of 30% energy savings.

OPTIMIZATION OF THE COLD AIR CIRCUIT

Cooling the roomThis is done using CRAC (Computer RoomAir Conditioning) units.Traditionally, the cold air is sent into the falsefloor at a slightly higher pressure and exitsvia perforated tiles in the contained coldaisle. The hot air is evacuated in the hot aisleand reprocessed by the unit.

Class A1:

typically a data center with tightly controlled environmental parameters (dew point,temperature, and relative humidity) and mission critical operations.Classes A2/A3/A4:

Row-based cooling solutionsThese cooling solutions integrated in theaisle (in or between the racks) reduce thecomplexity of the installation and providecooling as close as possible to the server.Particularly suitable for high density solu-tions or rooms without false floors, thesesolutions optimize the air flow so that it isas short as possible, which results in lowerlosses.

Example: the H20 cooling systemCommonly called a chilled water system, ituses water for exchanging thermal energybetween the secondary system and theprimary outdoor system. When the systemis running outside a water/glycol mixture isused as a coolant to prevent freezing. Thesystem can be designed as a single loopsystem avoiding an extra heat exchanger andtherefore maximizing the capability of freecooling. The water infrastructure is com-monly managed as a circuit for a whole roomor is part of a complete building.

The objective is to reduce power losses so as to increase the efficiency of theelectrical infrastructure. Power losses connected with energy conversion andUPSs currently represent around 10% of the total energy consumption of adata center, where the cooling alone represents 32%.Given the efforts made with regard to cooling, particularly through designsenabling the use of free cooling, these power losses will account for a largepart of the data center’s energy bill.

In order to increase the efficiency of theelectrical infrastructure, it is thereforenecessary to look into solutions that willreduce this percentage, in particular viathe power supply and distribution systems.

NOTEThe reduction of power losses must beworked at on a daily basis, via carefulmanagement of the energy requirements.Those responsible for operating a datacenter must therefore pay attention to theflow and quality of the incoming energy inorder to adapt the power demand to theactual requirements of the data center andensure optimum use of the power received.As the various power devices operateefficiently at low load conditions (atransformer used at 10% of its capacityis 3 times less efficient than at 60% ofit capacity, likewise for inverters andair conditioning units.), their energymanagement will be optimized and powerlosses limited.

NOTEThe power of a UPS is usually de-scribed in kVA, but a data center issized in kW because it is necessaryto know the actual active power to besupplied.

The power factor of the UPS, i.e. theratio between the active power (in W)and the apparent power (in VA), istherefore a very important indicatorof its performance. It often reaches0.8, while high performance UPS havea power factor of 0.9 or even 1 (whichis the case with Legrand UPS). Thismeans that when 80 kW is required,an 80 kVA UPS with a power factor of1 will be adequate, whereas a UPSwith a power factor of 0.8 at the outputmust be sized at 100 kVA.

The electrical infrastructure (rating ofthe circuit breakers) will therefore bebetter sized.

REAL WORLD RESULTS

When Cisco sought to reduce itsenergy consumption and costs, itslabs were an obvious target as theyaccounted for 60% of the company’stotal power usage, yet occupiedonly about 10% of its real-estatespace. The largest savings camefrom deploying smart PDUs in allnew labs and in major lab retrofits,as well as in existing labs. These

PDUs were compatible with Cisco’sEnergyWise infrastructure, whichCisco said removed barriers toadoption. The amount of powerthat the smart PDUs have savedvaries from 5 to 60%, dependingon the lab. At least $ 8.6M in annualelectricity bill savings is beingachieved according to in-depthcalculations by Cisco!

GREEN T.HE HV/LV TRANSFORMERS

These provide high energy efficiency anda lower environmental footprint (fewerpollutants).

An average of 3 times fewer losses is ob-served with these high efficiency transform-ers than with a standard transformer.

The Legrand Green T.HE offer gives youaccess to classes AoBk, AoAk and AAoAksolutions. The classification according tostandard EN 50588-1 stipulates that thetransformer with the lowest losses will beclass AAoAk.

PX® INTELLIGENT PDUs

Raritan’s offer comprises 230V and 415Vmodels, in hundreds of different configura-tions, including per socket monitoring thathelp to improve power usage effectiveness ofdata centers. Remote and “at-the-rack” datacollection of current (amps), voltage, power(kVA, kW), and energy consumption (kWh)allows you to:- benchmark entire racks and individual ITequipment as to identify inefficient IT devicesand ghost servers,- identify when more power is going to a rackthan needed and deploy “stranded power”elsewhere,- drive energy-efficient behavior and supportsustainability initiatives.

Power data obtained from PDUs can help youcalculate PUE at a granular level, allowingfor Category 3 PUE reporting. IntelligentPDUs send power-usage data over the net-work to a DCIM solution such as Power IQ®

to automatically calculate PUE. Total powerused in each rack can be compared to thebuilding’s overall power usage to create thefoundation for PUE calculation.

For greater efficiency, solutions for optimizing the coolingsystems and those to reduce power losses can be combinedwith measurement and supervision systems. This involves measuring the total energy con-sumed by the data center (in the equipmentroom). Measurement of consumption mustbe included in the main LV distribution board,thus enabling the losses of the UPS, the pow-er consumed by cooling and the consumptionof the IT equipment to be consolidated.

This involves measuring the energy con-sumed by the IT systems. This is done usingPower Distribution Units (PDU), intelligentrack transfer switches and monitoringsolutions.

Power Distribution UnitsRack PDU metering allows data center man-agers to monitor power in real-time to avoiddowntime brought on by overloaded circuits,and to efficiently utilize power resources.

This is a transmission medium that enables a largerbandwidth to be used than copper cables. Optical fibercables have major advantages over copper cables:total immunity to electromagnetic interference, hightransmission capacity, low attenuation, much smallercable sizes (10 times smaller than a copper cable)…

PoE certification

With PoE technology, devices (Wi-Fi access points,cameras, etc.) can be supplied directly with the Ethernetdata cable. In a single cable one has the passage of dataand voltage to supply the peripherals.There are three types of PoE in relation to the powersupplied:- PoE standard IEEE 802.3af (2003),- PoE + standard IEEE 802.3at (2007),- PoE ++ standard IEEE 802.3bt (2018).

For PoE++, the choice of connectors is fundamentalbecause the powers in play begin to be considerable. Thewiring standards must be respected because, when a liveRJ 45 connector is disconnected, an electrical arc can becreated, which damages the connector’s contacts.All the LCS3 connectors are certified PoE + and guaranteedfor PoE++.

High Density (HD)

As servers consume increas-ing amounts of energy, thermalundersizing must be avoided as itcould lead to faults (due to overheat-ing of the infrastructure) and a breakin continuity of service. STANDARDS

The main preliminary step for sizingthe energy source(s) is to carry outa “power analysis”, to ensure thereis an optimum power supply for allthe consuming receivers in the datacenter: lighting, heating, air condi-tioning and utilities… and of coursethe racks and IT systems. This poweranalysis must take the conditions ofuse, possible degraded modes (nopower) and even electromagneticinterference (harmonics) into accountin the dual interests of continuity ofservice and energy saving. The qualityof the energy (standard EN 50160) andthe distribution conditions (supplier,operators, proportion from renew-able sources, etc.) are parameterswhich must also be managed in thisoperation.

Standard EN 50600-1 gives gen-eral design recommendationsfor data center installations andinfrastructures.

Standards EIA/TIA 942-A (US version)and EN 50600-2-2 (EU version) giverecommendations on energy distri-bution, in particular for the Serviceindex/Mobility index.

The Green Grid, an international ref-erence system, also provides adviceon configuring energy distributionsystems.

In addition to specific standards, it isalso essential to comply with safetystandards for electrical installa-tions (IEC 60364-X set of standards)regarding equipment choice andimplementation, protection of people,and installation safety. Making an installation scalable without anyloss of capacity involves above all choosingsolutions that provide a modular architecturewhich guarantees optimum performance inall circumstances.

At UPS level, with modular solutionsThe integrated n+1 architecture of Legrandmodular UPS makes it possible to work ona module while maintaining the capacity “n”necessary for the installation, or even “n+1”if a module is available in stock. On-line double conversion technology

It consists of converting the current supplied via the raw mainssupply twice before supplying the installation: once to DC via therectifier, and once to AC via the inverter. Energy efficiency

The temporary physical reduction in thesize of server rooms will lead to increasedenergy density due to the use of servers withmedium and high density power require-ments. Due to the changing needs in termsof numbers of racks and power and thefluctuations that this involves in regard tocooling, it is essential for the design of serverrooms to be flexible and scalable.

A MODULAR APPROACH

It must therefore be possible for the capacityof a modern server room to be increased ordecreased quickly and easily. It is thereforeclear: the building of server rooms requiresa modular approach in order to provide anoptimum response to current and futureneeds and to changes in the market.

A modular approach to building a serverroom involves a great deal more than simplymaking it easy to add or remove racks:modularity also applies to the energy distri-bution, the backup power supply, the cooling,the network, etc. This enables the need toconstantly adapt the consumption of theserver room to the needs of the computerinstallation.

Keeping some space in reserve

With pre-equipped spacein reserve, there is no need to switch off themain supply when making modifications tothe installation: scalability and continuity ofservice are assured.

Electrical distribution for PDUsThis involves choosing the right electricaldistribution mode for the PDUs.For optimized distribution, Legrandrecommends a Legrand BUSBAR solutionMR DC with tap-off boxes, with or withoutmetering. When it includes metering, thissolution is ideal for colocation data centers.The complete unit, which can be connected tothe power and to the metering bus while theinstallation is energized, provides maximumflexibility as its equipment is easy to adaptto the type of power supply required (three-phase/single phase, 32-63-125-160 A).

For small applications, Legrand offers Plug& Play solutions for cable routing and theIS 223 distribution panel. Offering goodscalability at an optimum cost, this solutionis ideal for enterprise data centers.

NOTEWhen adapting an infrastructure in order to increase adata center’s capacities, it is essential to control capitalexpenditures (CAPEX), which can be substantial.

This is possible by resorting to solutions which allow anevolution of capacities at the rate of the data center’s realneeds. Implemented in a modular design, these solutions

As data centers house strategic dataessential to the operation of thecompanies to which that data belongs,it is essential to ensure the data isprotected. For this, two aspects mustbe considered.

EQUIPMENT

As data security is crucial for any datacenter owner (or for the owner’s custom-ers), increased protection of the equip-ment on which this data is located must beimplemented.

PEOPLE

Since data centers cannot operate withouthuman intervention, whether this is formaintenance or monitoring purposes, it is vi-tal to ensure optimum safety and security forall workers/visitors who need to be on-site orin the data center.

In 2015, approximately 10% of thebudget for building a data center wasallocated to safety and security of thebuilding, with more than half of thisbeing dedicated to fire detection andsuppression.

TECHNICAL DETECTION

Smoke, temperature rise, flood or water leakin air conditioning units, etc. are incidentswhich can have serious consequences on theoperation of the data center.

In addition to the specific standards, it is also essential to comply withthe safety standards for electrical installations (IEC 60364-X series ofstandards) for the selection and installation of equipment, the protection ofpeople, and the safety and security of the installations.

Likewise, all live products (servers, switches, etc.) incorporated in theracks must comply with standard IEC 60950 on the safety of informationtechnology equipment, to which reference must be made.

ELECTRICAL PROTECTION

Short-circuits, overloads, voltage peaks, etc.are electrical events against which protection isprovided by circuit breakers. It is important toprovide total discrimination between the vari-ous levels of protection and a very high level ofselectivity.

Optimum manufacturing techniquesThe manufacture of the insulating parts ofLegrand transformers and capacitor banksusing vacuum pressure moulding avoids any riskof fire breaking out, compared with manufactur-ing technologies using oil for cooling.

Capacitors in compensation systemsThese do not contain oil or gas and have a triplesafety system, comprising fuses and pressuremonitoring devices. The materials used complywith standard UL94V2. This helps to limit therisks of fire as much as possible. The capaci-tor banks can also optionally be equipped withsmoke detectors.

Optimization of the electricity systemManagement of the harmonics in UPS will, forexample, provide a better quality system, forgreater durability of the electrical infrastructure.

Residual current monitoringBy measuring current flowing in the groundwire, the residual current monitoring option(available on several of Raritan’s intelligent PXPDUs) reduces the risk of electric shock.Residual currents generate a system alert,keeping technicians safe!


FIRE SUPPRESSION

If a water fog or sprinkler fire suppressionsystem is used in the white room in acontainment situation, it is necessary toensure suppression of the fire (in the eventof an alarm) via an opening in the roof.

For this purpose, Minkels elaborated twohighly efficient solutions incorporated in thecold aisle containment systems:

- an opening roof system, either automaticabove 50°C or controlled electronically.

- Drop Away Panels : they ensure theseamless integration of aisle containmentsolutions with sprinkler or water mistsystems. In the case of a fire in the datacenter, the plastic Drop Away Panelsautomatically soften and fall down so thatthey do not form an obstruction whensprinklers are activated. The system isspecifically designed for use with sprinklerinstallations.
