    Dear all,

It gives me great pleasure in releasing “INSTRUMAX”. The Electronics

nd Instrumentaon department of SASTRA University has evolved consis-

ently in all spheres of academic acvity in the past two decades. I am

ery happy to see that the students of the department are involved in orga-

izing many acvies thereby improving their mul dimensional personali -

es. At this moment it is important to realize that more number of students

re eyeing for core companies and higher learning and I expect this trend

o connue in the coming years too.In this regard, I take the opportunity in

ongratulang the faculty members of the department in inculcang the

ight atude among students and thereby promong the quality of the

cademic output of the enre university. My sincere advice to you all is to

lize all the facilies provided by a very ecient management and there

y compeng hard in the race for excellence. I also would like to convey my

    Instrumentation and Control.

Instrumentation is the twin-sister of technological advancement an

first child of imagination and awesomeness. It is omnipresent in the a

Now is a time when everything is happening on a grand scale. Everything

    s “Magnum-Opus” or phenomenal. There is a non ceasing flow of ideas;

reativity that is striving to become better every growing second and there

s the Internet which is a constant, solid form of support for everyone that

wants to strike the chord. There was not a better time in history to be ‘Not

o Normal’, funny or experimental. It has been widely believed that the

nternet helped President Barack Obama hold on to his position; everyone

    nows about the revolution in Egypt which caught fire through facebook;

ustin Bieber owes it to the internet for making him land where he is today.

We are all on the same page when it comes to how integrated the internet

as become in our lives. If I tell you that ten years down the lane it will be

even more powerful than today, not one of you will deny. If I tell you t

will speed up our lives 10 times and reduce our patience 20 times, yo

not argue. But will you believe me if I tell you that we are moving forw

to reach a digital lifestyle where every machine we use today, right fr

toaster to the fan will be able to communicate among themselves li

human beings? Will you believe me if I tell you that our role here is o

ensure continuous supply of electricity for them to work?

This phenomenon is called the Internet of Things.

Machine to machine communication is not a new concept but the l

“things” that are able to communicate among themselves is incre

With new ideas flowing in, people are trying to create a world wher

chines, through digital communication will look after themselves. To

an image on how this will work let me give you an example. If any of

‘smart’ devices gets heated up, the ‘smart’ smoke detector senses i

asks if any of the devices are releasing excess heat and smoke. The to

identifies the message and responds saying that it is responsible fo

heat and that there is no need to worry about smoke. This preven

smoke alarm from giving a warning signal. Therefore, we could exper

    ‘interoperation’ of devices.

Quintessence. Aristotle. Wondering what that could be? Well then, let’s

me travel to 18th century. For ages aer “Thales”, from Greece discovered

he four basic cultural elements of nature or rather life, namely the earth,

ir, re, and water, nobody ever quesoned him about the existence of the

h one. Typical human mentality of accepng anything and taking it to

e a “by convenon” concept played a key role and kept everyone sased

nl when, “my genius”, Aristotle said, “Aether”, meaning quintessence, isossibly present along with the other four cultural elements. Well, Aether,

s the Greek name for the h element of nature. The world’s most intelli -

ent man, “everyone’s hero”, Albert Einstein, did contribute something by

hinking out of the box. Guess what? He did nd the h state of maer

nd named it quark-glucon plasma. So, all of these h transions proved

o be a milestone and has connued to inspire many engineers in designing

he most unique thing in the world which is again the h of, what line?

    eep guessing!!

ired of walking or running to catch a bus or train? Are you sea sick? Abhor -

ent to altude? HYPERLOOP TRANSPORTATION TECHNOLOGY (HTT) is the

h mode of transportaon which is yet to be widely accepted, in spite of

    ts dominang merit list.

n this Hustle bustle life, imagine yourself amidst the sun and stuck in traf -c.That 1min30 sec would obviously get you frustrated out of your wits. Is

t not? Above all, the gasoline prize all over the world keeps skyrockeng.

When on earth would petrol become cheap?” is the major queson lin -

ering in the minds of the middle and lower class people. Well, the scien -

sts think far sighted about the global crisis, the global warming, taking all

measures to make transportaon devoid of fuel. They have come

up with a marvelous discovery of HTT that eliminates such trac pro

and this supersonic air travel will result in no residue fuel, added to it

up being cheaper and faster. With a high enough altude and the

geometry, the sonic boom noise on the ground would be no louder

current airliners, so that isn’t a showstopper. Also, a quiet supersonic

immediately solves every long distance city pair without the need for a

new worldwide infrastructure. Technically speaking, Hyperloop cons

a low pressure tube with capsules that are transported at both low and

speeds throughout the length of the tube. The capsules are supported

cushion of air, featuring pressurized air and aerodynamic li. The capare accelerated via a magnec linear accelerator axed at various sta

on the low pressure tube with rotors contained in each capsule. Passe

may enter and exit Hyperloop at staons located either at the ends o

tube, or branches along the tube length.

Enjoyed watching ash series? Everyone wants to be a Barry Allen r

That might take an extra decade to come into picture, provided you be

an Aristotle too. Let’s now limit this idea to the speed of sound. Ye

perloop travels with the speed of sound. Moreover it is a self sucie

tem as the solar panels are placed along the track produce excess am

of energy actually required to run the system. There is pylon presen

which makes the climate controlled capsule inside the tube to be w

er independent and earthquake resistant. Plaguing housing problem

solved. This is one of the most aordable travels. Likewise the constru

costs have proved to be less too.

The demerits are not known yet and there is less chance of more cke

because its construcon cost is less. Sll want to grab your seat belt i

a car? Or want to speed high? Remember what late Mr.APJ Abdul K

o every RIDER out there #speed#long drive lovers….A peek into CRUISE

ONTROL – a STYLE all SET to ENVY!!

here’s always been a me at night when we have a road ahead with not

ven a y-crow (engliss version of ee-kaka kuda illada road :p). All you

would love to do is just relax a lile and enjoy the breeze hing you. So

    ere is one soluon.

    What is CRUISE CONTROL?

t is a device in the vehicle that the driver(Rider sounds a lot cooler ,isn’t

t??)turns on to make the vehicle connue at whatever speed THE RIDER

    as chosen.

    o , how do I acvate this?

ts real simple. All you got to do is press the CRUISE buon at the speed youwould want your car to move(using the accelerator peddle ,of course).

er the speed is set , you can remove your leg o the accelerator pedal.

he ACCEL is for accelerang-to increase speed further than the already set

ne and pressing the down buon would be for DECEL(reducing the speed).

    Vvv!!!

     Swetha R, IIIyr EIE

Thus you would only have to press the up or down buons and there

need for the accelerang peddle to be pressed.

    Ooops!!What if a dog/goat(any unexpected object ) comes before m

hicle??In such situaons all you goa do is press the brake peddle

would automacally switch the CRUISE CONTROL MODE OFF and thu

vehicle is again back to your control or the CANCEL buon is pressed

     ple isn’t it??

What purpose does the small cylindrical module near the end of my la

    charger cable serve ?

It is called as ferrite bead which is nothing but inductor [passive el

component] that suppresses high frequency noise in electronic circuit

It is a specic type of electronic choke. Ferrite beads employ the dissip

of high frequency currents in a ferrite ceramic to build high frequency

    suppression devices.
