score easy buckets off
their turnovers. Although
we were on the wrong end
of the score, the experi-
ence we gained playing
such a strong team will be
very valuable come season
opener.
The trip proved to be a
great bonding experience.
Having to drive 1100 km
each way was easily worth
the time and has become a
yearly event that every
player looks forward too!

During the weekend of
October 18-20th, the Au-
gustana Vikings men's
basketball team travelled
to Lewiston, Idaho to play
Lewes-Clark State Warri-
ors. We played two games
over the weekend, against
the Warriors who are part
of the NAIA's Frontier
Conference.
The first game Friday
night began quite slow for
us. We shot poorly offen-
sively but was able to
match up with them defen-
sively. However, their size
and 3 point shooting was
our down fall and ended
up losing by a consider-
able margin. Comments
from the Warriors' coach
and players were that "the
Viking players never
stopped running" and
"battled every play".
Saturday nights game was
a different story. We came
out gunning versus the
Warriors. We executed our
offence much more effi-
ciently and was able to

As our season is ending,
the Cross Country Run-
ning team is looking for-
ward to possibly the
toughest race of the sea-
son. The upcoming race
On October 27 is the Al-
berta Colleges Athletic
Conference Champion-
ships. We’ve all trained
hard, perfected our tech-
nique and prepared our-
selves for the grueling Au-
gustana course. The run-
ning team has this one
final challenge before we
head out to the national
running competition in
Montreal. In brief, the
women will be competing
in a 5 km running race and
the men will be running 8
km. The course takes us
from the Stoney Creek
Centre, down to the Uni-
versity, through the river
valley and back across the
other side and over the ski
jump hill. Our course is
full of hills, turns and am-
ple space for people to
come cheer on your Au-
gustana Vikings. The more
fans drawn out to the
Stoney Creek Valley will
surely encourage our Vi-
kings to push that little bit
harder. We hope to have a
sea of red and white sup-
porting us on course.
Don’t hesitate to volunteer
either! The ACAC Cham-
pionships are being held in
Camrose at the Stoney
Creek Ski lodge on Octo-
ber 27th. Races start at 12
o’clock and 1 o’clock for
men and women respec-
tively.

Women’s Basketball
star Kari Kubinec is the
first Viking of the year
to be named an ACAC
Athlete of the Week.
Kari had an outstanding
performance this past
weekend in a preseason
exhibition tournament
in Edmonton. Kari led
the team in steals with a
total of more than 13 on
the weekend. Her de-
fense was outstanding
and she contributed
with more than 25 re-
bounds and 35 points
throughout the week-
end. She helped lead
the Viking to three big
wins against NAIT (78-
60), Olds (83-55) and
Kings (74-44).
If Kari’s preseason per-
formance is any indica-
tor to the dominate na-
ture of this year’s Vi-
kings basketball team
then the fans are in for
a treat each and every
night of Vikings bas-
ketball this season. See
Kari and the whole
team in action next at
here at Augustana in
their Home Opener
against the SAIT Tro-
jans November 2nd at
6pm.
Congratulations Kari on
being named Athlete of
the Week!

The Vikings took two
big wins this past week-
end against the Grant
MacEwan Griffins. On
Friday the Vikings trav-
elled to Edmonton and
won 4-2. On Saturday,
Grant MacEwan came
to Camrose hoping for
a game in their favor.
The Griffins were un-
able to defeat the Vi-
kings as they pulled
together for a dominat-
ing 7-3 win. The Vi-
kings have moved into
third place in the
ACAC league.

tinued their preseason
action against NAIT

The NAIT Ooks won
the first two sets 25-15

This past October 19th
and 20th weekend the
Augustana Vikings La-
dies Volleyball team
travelled to Grande
Prairie Regional Col-
lege for their last week-
end of exhibition games
before the regular sea-
son. The Vikings bat-
tled the Wolves only to
win one in the third set
tively towards the an-
ticipated regular sea-

ing defeated the Key-

be a thriller. We look

With the NHL lockout
dominating news head-
lines and general dis-
cussion from the fur-
thest reaches of conti-
nent to our very com-
munity here in Cam-
rose, there is a sense of
restlessness amongst
the average person.
Professional sports are
so ingrained into our
culture that the absence
of one, especially the
NHL in this country,
leaves a collective void
in our routine. Instead
of talking about what a
great move Jordan
Eberle had on that pen-
alty shot last night or
what kind adjustment’s
the Oilers need to make
to be a playoff team, we
are lamenting the cur-
rent financial dispute
between millionaires
and multi-millionaires.
However, there is a so-
lution for this in com-
munities like ours.
While not profession-
als, we have quality
sports product on cam-
pus that is growing and
here to stay.
With professional
sports leagues, fans are
left with disappoint-
ment more the popular
perception tells. Fran-
chise relocation, free
agency taking away
stars and lockouts over
financial disputes are
just a few setbacks
sports fans go through.
Turning to college
sports, like our Vikings,
is a fantastic alternative
for a number of rea-
sons. First, cost. Rather
than spend a few hun-
dred dollars in one
night to see an Oilers
game, you could spend
around ten dollars on a
50/50 ticket, hot choco-
late, popcorn and a
game ticket for a Vi-
kings hockey game.
Basketball and Volley-
ball games would be
even less. And while
the community work
that NHL players can
do is significant, our
Vikings are truly apart
of the community. They
are regulars in stores/
restaurants, volunteers
in community service
like Athlete Mentorship
Program (AMP), and
help to showcase the
city to the rest of Al-
berta. They are on first
name terms with many
members of the com-
munity. And perhaps
most importantly, their
motivation isn’t based
solely on money.
Most of the athletes in
the ACAC will never
make any professional
league and may never
play their sport com-
petitively again in their
lives. They play be-
cause they love the
sport and love to com-
pete for a champion-
ship.
So if you are one of the
many individuals wait-
ing impatiently for the
lockout to come to an
end or have become
dissatisfied with profes-
sional sports, you can
find your solution at
Augustana.
There are 9 teams, 7
different sports and
over 100 athletes; all of
whom are striving to
achieve excellence or
continue to achieve it.
Some have already got-
ten a glimpse after see-
ing the hockey team
and cross country run-
ning team compete.
In the next two weeks,
those who make it out
to the gymnasium here
on campus will see our
volleyball and basket-
ball teams in their home
openers and be in for a
treat.
