Instructions to Authors
1 General Information
The Journal of Separation Science (JSS) covers all areas of chromatographic and
electrophoretic separation methods in theory and practice, both in the analytical and in
the preparative mode, solid phase extraction, sample preparation, and related
techniques. Manuscripts on methodological or instrumental developments, including
detection aspects, in particular mass spectrometry, as well as on innovative applications
will also be published. Manuscripts on hyphenation, automation, and miniaturization are
particularly welcome. Pre- and post-separation facets of a total analysis may be covered
as well as the underlying logic of the development or application of a method.
The work must contribute to the extension of science. Application of known methods to
just another substrate is not regarded as sufficient reason for publication.
2 General terms of publication
Manuscripts must be submitted to JSS via Manuscript Central – a web-based
manuscript submission and peer-review system. This service guarantees fast and safe
submission of manuscripts and rapid assessment. Using this system is obligatory.
Submission of manuscripts consists of the following steps:
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
A) Preparation of the manuscript and illustrations in the appropriate format according to
the instructions given below (see Sections 4 to 8). The paper has to conform to the
scientific and style instructions of JSS as given herein.
B) For the first submission, an author’s account in the system has to be created at the
submission site,
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/jss/
by clicking on the “Create Account” button.
C) The “Author Guidelines” given on the JSS website have to be read carefully. The
system guides through the submission process. Online help is available at all times
during the process.
Authors are able to exit/re-enter at any stage before finally “submitting” the work. All
submissions are kept strictly confidential. For any questions concerning the online
submission program, please contact Editorial Support at: [email protected]
Language should be clear and easily understood. Authors may choose to seek the
assistance of a colleague who is a native or highly proficient English speaker when
preparing their manuscript for submission. For authors seeking professional assistance,
Wiley Editing Services (http://wileyeditingservices.com/en/) offers a variety of options,
from language polishing to figure preparation.
The author vouches that the work has not been published elsewhere, completely, in
part, or in any other form, and that the manuscript has not been submitted to another
journal. The submitting author (listed under “Correspondence”) accepts the
responsibility of having included all appropriate persons as co-authors. The submitting
author certifies that all co-authors have seen the manuscript and agreed with its
submission. All scientific contributions will be peer-reviewed and judged on the criteria
of originality, quality, and novelty.
Authors are requested to suggest potential referees (including e-mail addresses) as well
as individuals they wish to be excluded from the review process. On acceptance,
papers may be subject to editorial changes.
Responsibility for the factual accuracy of a paper rests entirely with the author(s).
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
A revised paper will retain its original date of receipt only if it is resubmitted within two
months after request for revision.
The “Publication Charge Form” must be completed to cover any publication charges
that might accrue. Please note that if you are submitting material that has already been
published elsewhere, you must also send permission in writing to the Editorial Office
that this material may be reprinted in JSS. Authors are expected to carry any costs
arising from permissions arising from use of materials from other sources.
Our EarlyView online publication is updated weekly and enables papers to be available
online and citable before they are being published in an issue.
3 Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS)
If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for
the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services; where via
the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be able to complete the license

4 Types of contributions and publication charges
Four types of manuscripts are considered for publication:
(i) Research Articles describing completed studies. Manuscripts must not have been
published previously, except in the form of a preliminary communication. Unsolicited
research papers should not exceed 5500 words (including figure legends) and contain
no more than 5 to 7 display elements (figures and tables). Papers of up to 8 printed
pages will be published free of charge; for papers exceeding that length, a publication
charge of € 196 + VAT per additional page will be levied (see Section 2). Note that the
length of an article depends greatly on the type and number of figures and tables
provided.
(ii) Communications describing results that are brief, timely and/or of such importance
that rapid release is warranted. These manuscripts should bear the word
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
“Communication” above the title on the first page and should not exceed 3 printed
pages (including figures, tables, and figure legends).
(iii) Review Articles critically covering a specific area of separation science are
welcome. In addition to direct submissions, authors may also be invited by the Editors.
These contributions should typically not exceed 9300 words (including figure legends)
and contain no more than 7 to 8 display elements (figures and tables). Page charges do
not apply to Review articles.
All authors of review articles are invited to submit a portrait photograph of themselves
and a short biographical text (no more than 80 words) that will appear at the end of the
article.
(iv) Highlight Articles summarizing exciting recent developments in separation science
and technology without any deep experimental details. They comprise about 1800
words and up to 3 figures.
5 Online submission of manuscripts
5.1 Cover letter
You will be asked to include a cover letter as part of your online submission. Use this
letter to provide a very brief overview of your manuscript (a few sentences are enough)
and state why your research should be published in JSS.
5.2 Electronic manuscripts
Please follow the instructions in Section 6 “Organization of manuscripts” when preparing
the electronic version of the manuscript and ensure that data are given in the correct
order and style for the journal.
Main text (incl. front material) and figure legends (in this order) should be given in one
file as .doc or .rtf formats. Please use activated consecutive line numbering across all
pages. Tables and figures should be uploaded separately each as a separate file. Data
should be typed unjustified without hyphenation except for compound words. Use
carriage returns only to end headings and paragraphs. Do not use the space bar to
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
make indents. Use the TAB key where indents are required. If working in MS Word,
insert special characters through Insert/Symbol.
Do not show location of figures and tables in the text.
All submissions will be converted to PDF format during the upload process. The system
automatically generates one PDF file that contains all parts of the manuscript. Please
check this PDF carefully before you submit your manuscript.
Submissions not conforming to these rules will be un-submitted and returned to the
authors for correction and resubmission.
5.3 Revised manuscripts
In revised manuscripts, the areas containing the major required changes should be
marked and the font color changed preferably to red. Do not use the “Track Changes”
option of the MS Word. When submitting the revised manuscript, the original manuscript
has to be deleted from the list.
Upon acceptance of the manuscript, the final uploaded version will be taken as the
basis for copy editing and the subsequent production process.
6 Organization of manuscripts
Manuscripts must be typewritten with double line spacing (including references, figure
legends, etc.) using a font size 12. American or British spelling should be used
consistently. Authors are requested to follow these instructions carefully. Manuscripts
deviating from the prescribed organization and style will be unsubmitted and returned
for correction.
6.1 Contents of first page of manuscript
The first page of the manuscript should contain only the following:
1) Concise title of the paper with no acronyms except for standard abbreviations LC,
HPLC, GC, CE, CEC, and MS.
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
2) Full names (including first name) of the authors followed in the next line by their
affiliation(s). If the publication originates from several institutions, the affiliation of each
author should be clearly stated by using a number in superscript. Arabic numbers
should be used after the name and before the affiliation address.
3) A running title not exceeding 70 characters.
4) Title, name and full postal address, e-mail address and fax numbers of the author to
whom all correspondence (including galley proofs) is to be sent.
5) A list of the non-standard abbreviations used in the paper in alphabetical order (see
list of “Standard Abbreviations”, Section 8).
6) Keywords (max. 5, in alphabetical order), which will be used for compiling the subject
index. Keywords cannot be abbreviations, long strings of words, or general terms.
Select keywords carefully as they are used to find your paper when people are doing
literature searches. Consider what terms you would use when you do literature
searches to find papers similar to yours. “Separation” will not be accepted as a keyword.
6.2 Abstract
The second page of the manuscript should contain only the abstract. Abstract must be
self-explanatory and understandable without reference to the text. It should not exceed
200 words. Abbreviations except LC, HPLC, GC, CE, CEC, and MS must not be
introduced and used in the Abstract.
6.3 Division into sections
Manuscripts should be divided into the following sections:
“Abstract”
“1 Introduction”: containing a description of the problem under investigation and a
brief survey of the existing literature on the subject.
“2 Materials and Methods”: for special materials and equipment, the
manufacturer’s name and, if possible, its location should be provided.
“3 Results”
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
“4 Discussion”. It is possible to merge the Results and Discussion sections.
“5 Concluding remarks”
Acknowledgements
Conflict of interest statement
References
Figure captions
Subdivisions of sections should be indicated by numbered subheadings. For details see
any current issue of JSS.
6.4 References
References should be numbered sequentially in the order in which they are cited in the
text. The numbers should be set in brackets such as [2, 4, 15] or [2-7]. List of all
references in numerical order should appear at the end of the manuscript under the
heading “References”. References should be typed using the same font size 12 as the
text and with double spacing throughout. All authors of the cited paper must be shown.
Use of “et al.” instead of showing all authors is not permitted. Titles of journals should
be abbreviated according to the practice of Chemical Abstracts. All references should
include the title of the paper being cited in sentence case (only first word capitalized).
The following examples can be used as a template.

6.5 Acknowledgements
Acknowledgements as well as information regarding funding sources should be
provided and will appear at the end of the text (before the “Conflict of Interest
Statement”).
6.6 Conflict of interest statement
All authors must declare financial/commercial conflicts of interest. Even if there are
none, this should be stated in a separate paragraph following the Acknowledgements
section. This is a mandatory requirement for all articles.

6.7 Tables
Tables with suitable heading at the top and numbered with Arabic numerals should be
submitted each as a separate file and not included in the main document of the
contribution. Column headings should be kept as brief as possible and indicate units in
parentheses. Footnotes to tables should be indicated with a), b), c) etc. and typed on
the same page as the table. Explanations to the tables should appear at the bottom of
the tables, not in the table headings themselves.
6.8 Supporting information
Supporting information is encouraged. Extensive tables, NMR data, MS spectra, etc.
should be published online as supporting information. This material is not typeset so
authors should prepare this information in the final form. Also for this reason there will
be no galley proofs of this material.
Supporting information will be made freely available on the web (similar to the table of
contents and the articles abstracts). Authors are permitted to place this material on their
websites when they are setting up a link to the full-text version of the article on Wiley
Online Library. Further, other files may be submitted as supporting information (e.g.
animations, video sequences). All supporting information will also undergo the peer-
review process. This information has to be submitted electronically along with the main
body of the article. It is for the Editor-in-Chief to decide which part of the manuscript will
be published as supporting information.
6.9 Figures, graphs and legends
Please follow the instructions in order to have high quality images in your article.
• Graphs and photographs should be submitted each as a separate file, in .tif, .eps
.jpg, .ppt, or .pdf format, and have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi.
• Save figures containing a combination of photographic images and text (eg
annotated photographic images with text labels) as .eps. Any photographic
images embedded within these should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
• If the figure consists of several parts, all these parts should be integrated and
submitted as a single file.
• The width of the figure should approximately correspond to the width of a single
column on the printed page or to the entire width of the text (two columns).
• There is no fee for publishing colored figures and use of color in graphs is
recommended.
• Subpanels should be labeled (eg "A", "B", "C" etc.) on the top left hand corner
• Make sure that the lettering of all figures is large enough to be legible after
reduction to the journal size. Font size and line thickness of symbols and labels
should be sufficient, proportional, and consistent between figures.
• Graphs should not contain unnecessary grid lines nor boxes around them.
• Do not present captions with the figures.
• Each figure has to be accompanied by a legend/caption that is self-explanatory.
The legends should not appear under the figures, but be included in the main text
document, after the references.
• Figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in the order of
their appearance.
• In electropherograms presented horizontally, the anode should be on the left
while in vertical presentations the anode should be at the bottom. Two-
dimensional presentations, e.g. with isoelectric focusing and sodium dodecyl
sulfate electrophoresis in two dimensions, should be presented consistently with
the standard coordinate system.
• Finally: perform a visual check of the quality of the generated image. You should
be able to zoom in to about 300% without the image becoming noticeably blurred
or pixelated. If the image does appear pixelated at this zoom, then try going back
to the original image and checking that it complies with the recommended format
and settings

6.10 Image manipulation
Manipulation of images is strongly discouraged and all figures must accurately reflect
the original data. Information should not be enhanced, eliminated, added, obscured, or
moved. In cases where manipulation is unavoidable, this should be clearly detailed in
the Figure legend. All instruments, software, and processes used to obtain the images
must be detailed in the manuscript either in the Figure legends or the Materials and
Methods. Acceptable image manipulation includes uniformly adjusting the contrast of an
entire image, and any control images, ensuring that all original data, including the
background, remains visible and that no new features are introduced. Cropping of gels,
or re-positioning of lanes/fields, is permitted providing that all alterations are clearly
indicated by the use of dividing lines in the image itself, vital data are not removed and
an explanation of the alterations is included in the Figure legend. Unacceptable
manipulation includes, but is not limited to, the enhancement of one feature/band over
others, removal of background noise/bands etc. Authors must be able to produce all
data in their raw format upon editorial request.
6.11 Structural formulae and equations
Structural formulae should be submitted as figures. Mathematical and chemical
equations are to be written in the manuscript at the place where they fit and should be
marked by Arabic numerals in parentheses in the right margin in the order of their
appearance. Please use an equation editor to insert complex equations (the typesetter
cannot use equations inserted as pictures).
6.12 Units and symbols
The use of SI (metric) units is mandatory. Generally accepted nomenclature and
symbols as recommended by ASTM or IUPAC are preferred. In the interest of clarity,
symbols should be defined in the text. If numerous symbols are involved, they should be
listed and defined at the end of the text. The period should be used as a decimal point.
6.14 Abbreviations
Abbreviations are hindrances to a reader working in a field other than that of the author.
Therefore, their use should be restricted to a minimum. Abbreviations should be
© 2020 WILEY-VCH GmbH, Weinheim www.jss-journal.com
introduced only when repeatedly used. Abbreviations used only in a table or a figure
may be defined in the legend. Non-standard abbreviations should be defined in the list
of abbreviations at the first page of the manuscript, and again when first used in the
body of the paper. Section 8 at the end of these instructions provides a link to a list of
standard abbreviations that can be used without definition within the text of papers
published in JSS.
6.15 Ethics
If the manuscript describes experiments using animals, the permission of the national or
local authorities (giving the permission or the accreditation number of the laboratory and
of the investigator) should be stated. If no such rules or permissions are stipulated in the
particular country, this must also be mentioned in the paper. In the case of human
studies, it should be stated that local ethical committee approval has been received and
that the informed consent of all participating subjects was obtained.
7 Proofs and reprints
Authors will receive one set of proofs before publication. Corrections should be limited
to actual errors and submitted promptly by using the online proofing system. Authors will
be charged for extensive alterations. Reprints or a high-resolution PDF file can be
ordered at prices shown on the reprint order form, which will be sent with the proofs.
8 Expects Data Sharing
Journal of Separation Science encourages authors to share the data and other artefacts
supporting the results in the paper by archiving it in an appropriate public repository.
Authors should include a data accessibility statement, including a link to the repository
they have used, in order that this statement can be published alongside their paper.
Visit re3data.org or fairsharing.org to help identify registered and certified data
repositories relevant to your subject area.
More information about the Data Sharing Policy can be found here.
