Revolutionary Krell CASTTechnology

Current Audio Signal Transmission, .termedCAST, is a revolutionary method of connectinganalog audio components for unparalleledsonic performance. Innovative engineeringcombines the new Krell CAST circuitry withexisting Krell Current Mode technology to cre-ate entire CAST systems that reproduce musicwith incredible range, tonality, and precision.

Voltage Signal Transmission and theTraditional Audio SystemTraditionally, signal is transmitted in the voltagedomain between two components. In an audiosystem, each component is a discrete entity withunique characteristics that act upon the musicalsignal independently. Each component isunaware of the other components in the system. The cables that connect the components eachhave their own electrical characteristics, whichaffect the sonic presentation of the entire system.

CAST: A New ApproachCAST circuitry recognizes signal transmitted inthe current domain instead of the voltagedomain between each component. CAST trans-mission unifies the individual components andtheir interconnects into an electrically linkedwhole. The sonic presentation of the entire sys-tem remains intact.

CAST BasicsHere’s how a CAST audio system works.Internally, each CAST source transfers, oramplifies, current using Krell Current Mode cir-cuitry. This current signal is then output usingCAST circuitry. When the signal is received bya CAST input, Krell Current Mode circuitryagain takes over until the signal reaches theloudspeaker. By maintaining the musical signalin the current domain from beginning to end, anentire CAST system behaves as if it is one com-ponent. With CAST, anomalies of signal transmis-

sion between components are eliminated. Cableimpedances and their effects on the transmittedsignal are non-existent.

How CAST and Krell Current Mode InteractWhile CAST is a new method of transferring themusical signal between components, its originstems from Krell Current Mode, the technologydeveloped to transfer the musical signal withina component. CAST combined with KrellCurrent Mode takes circuitry signal transmis-sion to the next evolutionary level. In essence,Krell Current Mode maintains the integrity of thesignal within the component and CAST pre-serves the transmitted signal between compo-nents. Together, CAST and Krell Current Modetechnologies unify separate Krell componentsinto a single global circuit.

CAST Cable ConstructionA CAST system uses cables manufactured byKrell and other manufacturers speciallylicensed by Krell. Thin and flexible CAST cablesare constructed with the same build quality asother Krell products and are aestheticallymatched to the components that Kreil manufac-tures. An all-metal body and locking connectorswith gold contacts are part of the standard no-compromise specification developed for everyCAST cable made.

The Best Musical PerformanceWhen you operate a CAST system, you willhear significant improvements in every perfor-mance area: speed, precision, dynamic range, depth and width of the sound stage, transientimpact, tonal balance, harmonic distortion, andmore. The goal for CAST is the same companygoal used for all Krell products. Krell strives forthe delivery of the best performance of a musi-cal event for you, using the full expression oftechnology to date.

INPUT AND OUTPUTCONNECTIONSAnalog Output ConnectionsThe KPS 28c is equipped with three analog out-put connections: CAST, balanced, and single-ended. Krell recommends using its proprietaryKrell CAST system for unparalleled sonic per-formance between the KPS 28c and other KrellCAST-equipped components.

The KPS 28c also offers conventional balancedoperation. The circuitry and connections associa-ted with balanced operation not only can minimizesonic loss but also are immune to induced noise, especially for installations using long cables.Balanced connections have 6 dB more gain thansingle-ended connections. Please keep this speci-fication in mind when level matching is critical.

The XLR pin configuration is described below:

Pin 1 Ground

Pin 2 Non-inverting (0°)

Pin 3 Inverting (180°)

The CAST, balanced, and single-ended outputsare located on the back panel. Maintain the cor-rect left/right orientation.

IMPORTANTConnecting non-CAST components to CASTinputs or outputs can damage your equipmentand void your warranty

Do not attempt to change CAST cable termina-tions or CAST inputs or outputs to RCA or XLRconnectors. It is electrically impossible to con-vert CAST input or output connections for bal-anced or single-ended voltage operation.

Please read the Warranty, on page 15, tounderstand the warranty limitations of the KPS28c.
