    Instructions for the Prayer Vigil

    Vigil Ethos

This is a peaceful, prayerful vigil. We come to the clinic in prayer, love andcompassion. This is definitely not a protest or demonstration. If you seeanyone taking part not in accord with this tone or ethos you should ask themto stop immediately and make it clear to them that this is a peaceful, prayerful vigil. All vigil participants should sign up to the declaration of peace.

If you have not done so already, please sign a copy of the declaration whichis found in a folder in the black box and leave it in there for collection.

    Vigil area set-up

    1. Start of the day the two people who sign up for 8am should meet at 7:55amat St Giles Hotel (Bedford Avenue, WC1B 3GH) to carry the banner, posters, easels and boxes over. The posters have a poster carrier, the boxes andeasels can be stacked on the trolley.

    2. The area should be set up as follows:

The banner base can be filled with water or sand in verywindy weather, otherwise placing bags on base is enough tokeep it standing. The trolley can be folded away. The 40 days flyers, magazines, good counsel leaflets, rachels vineyard cards, business cards with counselingservice numbers and models should be displayed on top ofthe two stacked boxes.

The smaller posters should be placed on the easels. The fetal development pictures can be layed out on theground.Bags can be hidden inside the boxes to protect from the rain.

    3. If you find yourself alone because someone has failed to turn up on time, please call Poppy on 07951 255 063 in the first instance. If she is unable toanswer please leave a message and she will get back to you ASAP. Also, please feel free to call any other of the committee members who willendeavor to find an extra participant as quickly as possible. Please see thelist of contacts below.

    4. When praying, feel free to use the materials provided in the box judiciously. Please be sensitive to Christians of other denominations and try to praytogether.

    5. If a passer-by tries to engage in a conversation, let only one vigil participanttalk with them. The others should continue praying. Often it is better to givean interested passer by the magazine and flyer rather than engage in a

debate. This will allow you to get back to prayer. If someone expressessupport, invite them to join in and give them the blue flyer with the websiteaddress for signing up.

    6. Please distribute the material provided, do not distribute any other materialduring the vigil without first asking a member of the organising committee.

    7. If a passer-by is rude or aggressive you must not return any similar behavior instead you can tell them you love them. This is crucial as we are there tobring love, compassion and hope to a place that desperately needs it. Theirrudeness and anger shows us how much they need our love and prayers. Atthe same time, we do not need to tolerate physical abuse or repeatedthreatening behaviour and verbal abuse. If this occurs, write down the date, time, who was present, what was said and inform the police on the crimereporting line 0207 230 1212. If you behave implacably, if the police getunfairly called against you, you will have nothing to fear. This has nothappened to the prayer vigil participants but the counselors are moreexposed.

    8. At the end of the day, the last people at the vigil should carry the banners andboxes back to St Giles Hotel, Bedford Avenue. Please replenish the suppliesof flyers and magazines in the boxes once there. Please remember that if youwant to continue praying at the clinic alone, you will need to get the bannerand boxes back to St Giles for the night then come back alone.
