WHICH FILMS WERE MOST SUCCESSFUL (AND WHY)?

The most successful film of 2012 was the Hunger Games a possible reason for maybe the fact that it was derived from a very popular source novel so even before the release of the film it would have an expected audience.

Another possible reason for this is its extensive advertising. Aided by its distribution by Lionsgate (the largest and most successful independent film studio in North America).

WHAT ARE THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AUDIENCE FOR THIS GENRE (AGE, GENDER, SOCIAL CLASS)?

Characteristics of the audience for a thriller film are (generally):

• Age: (dependant on subgenre) 16 – 40

because usually they contain adult subject matter meaning the low end will be of an adult age but more recent thrillers contain action sequences more suited to a youngish audience.

• Gender: predominantly male

however once again dependant on subgenre

• Socio economic group: C1 - D

The reason for this being usually new thriller contains a hybrid of crime (more appealing to the higher part of the scale) and action (more appealing to the lower part of the scale)
