living Proven Guernsey Sire Directory James R. Nichols, Head, Dairy Science Department
Ron Buffington, Extension Specialist John White, Research Geneticist
Information Presented:
1. All the Living Proven Guernsey Bulls in A-I Studs (a total of 74) are arranged in alphabetical order.
2. Semen from almost all of these bulls is available to all dairymen or A-I Studs at a reasonable cost.
3. The bulls are assigned to the studs that are presently housing them.
4. United Semen Exchange represents a group of 9 A-I organizations which are working together to provide a wider selection of valuable sires at a reasonable cost. Members of USE are Atlantic Breeders Cooperative (ABC), Louisiana A.B.C.
(Louis.), Maryland-West Virginia Bull Stud (Md. -W. Va.), Michigan A. B. C. °(Mich.), Mississippi A.B.C. (Miss.), NOBA, Inc. (Noba), East Tennessee A.B.A. (E. Tenn.), Tennessee A.B.A. (Tenn.), and Virginia A.B.A. (VABA). If a bull is listed under the USE heading, semen from him is available through your VABA technician.
5. Production Information is from the May 1967 USDA-DHIA Sire Summary.
6. Production Records are DHIA 305 2X M.E. on all tested daughters.
7. Reliability of a sire's proof is a measure of the relationship between this proof and his true breeding value. A-I and non-AI proven sires are no longer listed separately, but rather all are listed together with the number of daughters and number of herds represented in the proof. In essence, the more daughters and herds represented in the proof, the higher will be his reliability, and the more accurate his proof.
8.. Predicted Difference rating for Proven bulls is the most accurate method yet devised for evaluating the genetic merits for milk production of a sire. It has been calculated to remove known environmental effects arising from herd, year, season of freshening, and number of daughters and herdmates. A "Plus" Pred. Dif.. indicates a sire has the ability to improve the herd genetically, and a "Minus" Pred. Dif. means just the opposite. The reliability index should be strongly considered when selecting a bull on the basis of predicted difference.
9. Type Information on each bull as to the total number of classified daughters and their average score was supplied by the American Guernsey Cattle Club.
ISSUED IN FURTHERANCE OF COOPERATIVE EXTENSION WORK ACTS OF MAY 8 AND JUNE 30 1914 IN COOPERATION WITH THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF AGRICUL TUR,E. W. E. SKELTON, ' DIRECTOR OF 'EXTENSION SERVICE, VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE, BLACKSBURG, VIRGINIA 24061.
