ENVIRONMENTNowadays, globalization, energy and theenvironment represent the primary themeon which many countries are focusing. One of the main challenges humanity willhave to face tomorrow will be to master itsenergy use and supply, together with asustainable use of its natural resourcesand environmental quality. While energyand environment problems used to bemostly considered as local andindependent (e.g. local pollutions due toeffluent emissions – local resourcesexploitation) they are now increasinglyconsidered to be regional and globalissues (e.g. acid rain, transboundaryimpacts of energy use, the greenhouseeffect etc.). Therefore there is a growingneed for specialists able to understandboth energy and environmental problems.Such problems have now become majorpolitical issues and the subject ofinternational debate and regulation.Energy and environmental problems areno longer isolated issues which can bedealt with in each country or regionindependently from the others. On thecontrary, they are internationally sharedtopics which require multi-nation analysisand solutions. It is thus fundamental thatfuture specialists have an internationalperspective and have studied in amulticultural program.

COURSE AIMSThe objective of the Master of Science is totrain project leaders or supervisorscapable of managing complex engineeringprojects in the domain of the environmentand energy (conversion systems, energypolicy and energy efficiency) within aninternational context. The MSc PM3Eoffers a balanced program of managementskills and engineering techniques forenvironmental and energy projects. Thetechnical part of the course concentrateson technology and process engineering aswell as process modeling, simulation andcontrol. A significant part of the programis also devoted to social sciences forproject managers.

INCENTIVEGiven the current context of naturalresource depletion, environmental andpublic health crises related to air andwater pollution, pressures on energysupplies, we are facing a paradigm shift. The linear model “take, make, consumeand dispose” is progressively beingreplaced by a 4R approach “repair, refurbish, reuse and recycle”. The circulareconomy is becoming day after day a newdevelopment strategy for nations. Bettereco-design, waste prevention and reusebring significant net savings forbusinesses, while also reducingenvironmental harm and bringing new jobopportunities. Turning biomass and wasteinto a valuable resource is at the heart ofthis strategy. Generating new materials, processes and markets requires globalhigh-level training, including science, technology, regulatory knowledge, management and economics. All theseinnovative systems will emerge at thecrossroads of process engineering, chemistry, fluid mechanics, thermalscience, environmental sciences andeconomics as well as social sciences andhumanities. BiWEM was created to satisfythe growing needs of this dynamic sector.

COURSE AIMSThe objectives of BiWEM are to providestudents with a sound theoretical andpractical specialised knowledge in thefield of biomass and waste processing.

Students in the program will acquire theability to design economically viablebiological or thermochemical processesfor the conversion of biomass and wasteinto new materials or energy carriers, within a sustainable development frame.Consequently, BiWEM focus on chemicalengineering but also includes courses oneconomics, international regulations andon certain areas of the social sciences andhumanities.

PROGRAM This is a full-time program of 2 yearsdivided into four semesters: lectures, tutorials and practical work over the3 academic semesters followed by aninternship of one semester in a companyor in a public research lab. The program is composed of five teachingblocks, including an integrated teamproject over the three academic semestersunder the supervision of expertpractitioners.During the 6-month MSc thesis, studentshave the opportunity to consolidate andimprove the knowledge and the skillsbeing taught. Students are supervised by atutor from the host organization and by asenior lecturer from Mines Albi. Thesis isconcluded by the preparation of a finalreport and an oral dissertation in front of ajury.

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTIONThis program is taught in English andincludes progressive immersion in theFrench language and culture.

ENVIRONMENTThe explosive growth of networks, bothfixed and mobile, has led to the design, study, assessment, deployment, andadministration of highly complex, distributed communicationinfrastructures. Powerful forces arebehind these innovations: high-speedconnectivity for users, great mobility(cellular networks, WiFi, LTE…) andseamless, ubiquitous access to theInternet. Network infrastructures andservices, which were previously separate, are being integrated and interconnected, thus opening the way for new markets, new uses and new applications.Convergence is everywhere: theconvergence of telephone, data andcontent-distribution networks; theconvergence of infrastructure-based andad-hoc networks, with the arrival ofhybrid/mesh networks; the convergence ofcellular and local wireless networks; andthe convergence of services from both thefixed and mobile worlds.

COURSE AIMSIn spite of the ubiquity of the IP protocolsuite, this convergence does not meanthat networks will become the samethrough one single technology, rather thatthey must be highly interoperable. It iscrucial for technical experts to be trainedin order to guarantee the quality of theservices on offer. This Masters program also offers agateway to PhD studies.
