Installation types

Before you begin installing AliasStudio, you must decide which type of installation you will use.

Local installation

In a local installation, the AliasStudio software and a license are on a local computer. A single user at this machine can run AliasStudio.

● One computer◆ install software (See Installing procedures)◆ install license, if required (See Licensing Windows on

page 35.)

In this type of installation a node-locked license is used. It enables you to run AliasStudio on one particular computer. This computer must have an Ethernet ID or hardware lock.

License server installation

In a license server installation, the AliasStudio software is installed on multiple client computers and the licenses and FLEXlm server software are installed on a server.

8IntroductionInstallation types

● One Server◆ install AliasStudio utilities (recommended as these

tools have been updated).◆ install AliasStudio licenses, if required (See Licensing

Windows on page 35.).

● Many users◆ install AliasStudio software (see Installing procedures)

For this installation a floating license is used. It allows anyone on the network to use the licensed software, on as many machines as you have purchased licenses for. For example, if you install five licenses on your server, up to five machines on the network can run the licensed software at any one time.

You choose one machine on your network to act as the server for these licenses. This server machine needs either an Ethernet ID or a hardware lock. All other machines must be able to connect to and receive their license from this server.

Setting system hardware properties

The performance of AliasStudio in displaying graphics depends on the quality of your graphics card and on the option settings in the Display Properties window of your graphics card.

To learn the option settings for graphics cards that are certified for use with AliasStudio, see the latest qualification chart, at www.autodesk.com/qual-charts/.

Also see the README file on your installation CD ROM for last-minute updates.

If your graphics card is not certified, perform the following steps. Some of these steps offer only general guidelines because each manufacturer has a unique set of display options.

To set up your graphics card

1 Right-mouse click a blank part of your Windows desktop and choose Properties from the pop-up menu. This displays the Display Properties window, also available through the Control Panel.

2 Click the Settings tab.

3 From the Color Palette pull-down menu, choose True Color. This specifies 24 bits of color for best color quality in displayed images.

4 Drag the Desktop Area slider to the best display resolution supported by your hardware.

5 When the driver software for your graphics card was installed, a tab named for the card was likely created in the Display Properties window. The tab has performance options that vary with the kind of card. Here are some general suggestions for setting performance options:In the Display Properties window, click the tab named for your graphics card, if there is one. AliasStudio works with four-bit or greater overlay planes, whether they are single-buffered or double-buffered.

6 Click Apply, then OK.

7 Some graphics cards have a AliasStudio OpenGL preset. Check the qualification charts at www.autodesk.com/qual-charts/ for information regarding setting up your video card.

To set up your mouse and keyboard

The mouse buttons should be set as follows:

1 left mouse button: click

2 middle mouse button: middle mouse button

3 right button: contextual menu/right mouse button To check or set the mouse buttons, go to the Windows Start menu and choose Settings > Control Panel > Mouse. Use standard mouse driver option settings. Do not, for example, set the middle mouse button to work as a double-click of the left button. Some vendors offer Windows enhancement software that lets you use your mouse to activate windows and panels in the same way as in UNIX operating systems. For example, you can download an XMouse productivity tool from microsoft.com to simulate UNIX mouse-window activation. However, we have not tested such software for use with AliasStudio for Windows. A wheel mouse (such as Microsoft Intellimouse) should operate as a 3-button mouse. If not, re-configure it in your Windows Control Panel (choose Start > Settings > Control Panel > Mouse). You do not need to install a new driver.

Before you begin: checklist

You must run the installer on each computer where you want to run the software. If you’re going to use a computer to serve licenses, you must install the License utilities on that computer.

Issue Required action

Your computer system must meet specific hardware and software requirements for you to successfully install and run AliasStudio.

Autodesk does not support hardware and software configurations that do not meet these requirements.

Review the requirements section in this chapter (System requirements (page 11)).

The most up-to-date information on specific hardware system qualifications for your computer can be found on the Autodesk Web site:

www.autodesk.com/qual-charts/

You must have administrator privileges to install AliasStudio. (You do not need to be an administrator to launch AliasStudio once it is installed.)

If you do not have administrator privileges on your computer, you’ll need to contact your system administrator.

To avoid any conflicts when installing AliasStudio, we recommend that you close all other programs and disable virus detection software before launching the installer.

Before installing:

• Close all programs.

• Disable any virus detection software.

Having multiple versions of AliasStudio installed on a machine and adding each version’s path to the user’s environment PATH variable may cause version conflicts.

Only add the path currently needed for the version of AliasStudio that is being run. Under most circumstances AliasStudio performs correctly if the path is not set.

22Installing proceduresBefore you begin: checklist

● Install AliasStudio on each computer where you want to run it.

● You can install from a local CD-ROM drive or from a shared CD-ROM drive accessed via a network mapped drive.

● If you are upgrading from an older version, the installation proceeds as normal. The older version is kept, and you are able to use it along with the newer version. If you added a shortcut icon in the prior installation, it remains.

To install AliasStudio on Windows

1 There are three methods of installation:

● If you are installing directly from the CD-ROM, load the CD into your computer. The Autorun program starts and an autorun window appears. (If it doesn’t, browse the CD-ROM and double-click the Setup.exe icon.)The AliasStudio Installation window appears, giving you a choice of products and actions.

● If you have copied the CD-ROM onto your hard drive, you can install AliasStudio from there. Open the directory and double-click the Setup.exe icon.

● If you plan to install and run AliasStudio on a server for clients machines to access the StudioTools software, please see StudioTools "Application Server" Install (page 27).

AliasStudio "Application Server" Install

Microsoft's Windows Installer technology provides the ability to install software on a server and run the applications from a client workstation over the network. In this configuration the bulk of the software is installed once on the server; each client requires only a minimal install to create shortcuts that reference files on the server.

This provides a number of benefits for organizations that have a large install base of AliasStudio:

● Faster client installations -- only a few files are installed on each client workstation, so the installation takes much less time than it would for a full product install.

● Reduced disk space requirements on the client — again, because few files are installed on the client workstation, very little disk space is consumed.

Installing AliasStudio using an Application Server

For instructions on installing AliasStudio for an Application Server, see the ReadMe.txt file in the AppServe folder at the top level of the installation CD.

IE Settings for Windows XP SP2

To run the AliasStudio help system, computers that have been updated with Windows XP Service Pack 2 need to have some settings changed.

Changes to default security settings are made when an upgrade to Windows XP Service Pack 2 is performed. These changes can result in unexpected popup messages requiring you to explicitly allow the help system to be viewed.

When you first open the online help system, you'll get the following message:

To help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this file from showing active content that could access your computer.

You can then click for the option to Allow Blocked Content. If this is done, you'll receive a Security Warning that says:

Allowing active content such as script and ActiveX controls can be useful, but active content might also harm your computer. Are you sure you want to let this file run active content?

Introduction

What licensing does...

A license is a coded record of your software purchase. The license resides in a license file on your machine.

When you need a license

You must go through the process of obtaining and installing a license if:

● You are installing AliasStudio for the first time

● You are upgrading AliasStudio from an older version

● You are relocating AliasStudio to a different computer.

Some definitions

Serial NumberA record of what you purchased from Autodesk, required for obtaining a license through Online Product Activation. Here is a sample of what a serial number might look like:

STF030-B-3322-0933-7182-1111-0000or it might look like:

342-52134876If you did not receive a serial number when you purchased the product, contact your local Autodesk sales office or your reseller.

Hardware ID (Host ID)An alphanumeric code that identifies the machine that is authorized to run the software, required for Online Product Activation. This number can be an ethernet ID (also known as a MAC Address) or a hardware key (dongle). The Product Configuration wizard will, in most cases, identify your MAC Address. Or, you can get your Hardware ID by choosing Licensing Utility Tasks from the Product Configuration Wizard, and selecting Show OPA Hardware Identifiers on this computer.

Note If you are looking for the Hardware ID for a laptop, contact your local system administrator, as the number that will be displayed by the Product Configuration wizard will not be correct.

Online Product ActivationAn automated activation process where you submit an online form with your serial number and hardware ID, and a license is automatically generated and sent back.

Product Configuration WizardA tool that uses Online Product Activation to allow you to request and install your license easily.

LicenseUpdate.exeAn installer containing license data for existing Autodesk AliasStudio Platinum membership customers.

Node-locked licenseA license for a single computer. It lets you run AliasStudio only on the computer where the license is installed. (Or, in the case of hardware locks, on the computer where the hardware lock is attached.) Nodelocked licenses look similar to the following sample:

FEATURE Studio sgiawd 2008 09-may-2007 \ uncounted 7CD390F11000\HOSTID=123456789012

Floating licenseA license to be shared by various computers on a network. The Autodesk AliasStudio software is installed on many computers, each with a license file that accesses the floating licenses installed on a server. Floating licenses require client and server setup. Also called a site license. Floating licenses look similar to the following sample:

SERVER pc-server 123456789012 7111VENDOR sgiawdFEATURE Studiof sgiawd 2008 10-may-2007 1 FC29A6FBF000

Your software may already be licensed

Use these instructions if:

● You are an Autodesk AliasStudio Platinum membership customer

Do not use these instructions if:

● You are a new customer

● You are an existing customer, but not an Autodesk AliasStudio Platinum membership customer

If you are an existing Autodesk AliasStudio Platinum membership customer, your licenses may be included in LicenceUpdate.exe on the software CD. The LicenseUpdate application installs encrypted licenses.

Double-click LicenseUpdate.exe to install your license.

To confirm that the license has been installed, run AliasStudio. If your license has been installed, the AliasStudio software starts up and no further action is required.

Obtaining your licenses from the LicenseUpdate.exe

If you are an existing Alias customer and your licenses were not installed by double-clicking LicenseUpdate.exe, you may be able obtain and install your licenses from Webkey on the Autodesk Web site.

Getting the Webkey using the Alias Product Configuration Wizard.

1 Start Autodesk AliasStudio. If you have not licensed Autodesk AliasStudio, the Product Configuration Wizard appears. If the Product Configuration Wizard does not appear, you can launch it from your Windows Start menu by selecting Programs > Autodesk > AliasStudio 2008 > Licensing.

Activating the software from a serial number

Use these instructions if:

You only have a serial number and...

● You are a new customer installing AliasStudio for the first time.

● You are upgrading AliasStudio to a new version, and do not have a Platinum membership.

● You are relocating AliasStudio to a different computer.

● You are setting up a floating license server on a Windows machine where you want the software installed on the server machine.

Do not use these instructions if:

● You already have a license. Go to Activating the software from a license (page 44).

● You are an Autodesk AliasStudio Platinum member who may already have a license available through LicenseUpdate.exe. Go to Your software may already be licensed (page 39).

● You are setting up a floating license server and do not want the Alias software installed on it, or you want to set up a floating license server using operating systems other than Windows. Go to Setting up floating servers without installing the software (page 46)

After you install your copy of the AliasStudio software, you need to obtain a license to activate the software.

The easiest and fastest way to get a license is to use the Internet.

What if my machine can’t browse outside to the Internet?

If no computer in your organization has access to the Internet, follow the Product Configuration Wizard until (fax phone email) is requested; you will need to request your license by email.

If you can access the Internet from some machine in your organization (but not the machine you’re licensing):

1 On the computer that is being licensed, follow the Product Configuration Wizard until you are asked how you want the data sent to you. Request the one of the phone, fax, and email options. You will be provided with all the data you need to license the computer (hardware ID, serial number, and so on). Record or print this data.

2 On another computer that is connected to the Internet, go to the following URL: www.autodesk.com/opa

3 Enter the serial number, hardware ID, and other information you recorded for the computer you want to obtain a license for. Once the license is returned, install it on the computer you want to license.

Where is my serial number?

New customers will receive a serial number in one of the following ways:

● emailed or otherwise sent directly from the reseller where you obtained your copy of the software

● emailed directly from Autodesk.

● on the outside of your software package (available from selected resellers)

What do serial numbers look like?

Here is a sample of what a serial number might look like:

STF030-B-3322-0933-7182-1111-0000

or

123-12345678

What if I don’t have a serial number?

If you did not receive a serial number, contact your local Autodesk sales office or your reseller to obtain one.

The following instructions tell you how to use your serial number and hardware ID to obtain license data from Autodesk. The instructions then tell you how to use the license data to create a license file that can be used to run the software.

Setting up floating servers without installing the software

Use these instructions if:

● You are setting up a floating license server and do not want to run the AliasStudio software on it.

● You want to set up a floating license server running on operating systems other than Windows.

Do not use these instructions if:

● You have a node-locked (single) license.

● You intend on using a Windows machine as a floating license server. In this case, you must install the Autodesk AliasStudio software. Go to Activating the software from a serial number (page 41) or Activating the software from a license (page 44).

● You intend on using a Windows machine as a floating license server and as a working machine. Go to Activating the software from a serial number (page 41) or Activating the software from a license (page 44).

In some cases, you may want to set up a floating license server on platforms other than Windows. Or, you may want to set up a dedicated license server on Windows machines without installing the Autodesk AliasStudio software.

In these cases, you cannot use the Product Configuration Wizard for license installation. If you are setting up a server on a platform other than Windows, you must download the appropriate license tool software from the Autodesk website.

To set up the license software1 Go to www.autodesk.com/licensetools (You may have to

register for this free service.)

2 From the Web site, open the installation instructions for the server machine’s operating system. From these instructions, find out how to locate the hardware ID for the server machine. Copy or write down this hardware ID.

3 Download and install the license tool software on the server machine, if required.

4 Submit your license request at www.autodesk.com/opa/. To submit your license request, you need to provide the serial number for the floating license you purchased, along with the hardware ID for the machine that will be the floating server.

5 Follow the installation instructions you downloaded to set up and configure the server and its clients.

If you do not have Internet access:

If you do not have Internet access, you need to phone in or fax a SPAR form with the hardware ID for your server machine. Contact your Alias representative for details.

Set up the client computers

Client computers must have AliasStudio installed and must have a client license file that points to the license server.

These steps aren’t necessary for the server...

You can already run AliasStudio locally on the license server computer using its existing aw_servername.dat file, so you don’t need to do the following steps for the server.

To set up the client computer:

1 Install AliasStudio on every client computer you are going to set up.

2 On the server machine, make a copy of its server license file, located at C:/FLEXLM/aw_servername.dat. Place the copy at another location (for example, your desktop) and rename it aw_clientname.dat.

Note Only the original file, aw_servername.dat, should remain in the server’s FLEXLM folder.

Tip Make sure that Hide known File Extensions is not checked as one of your View options for this folder, or the file may be called aw_clientname.dat.txt but you will only see it as aw_clientname.dat.

aw_clientname.dat.txt will not work as a license file. (You will have to rename it to aw_clientname.dat.)

3 Edit the file you copied in a text editor (for example, Notepad).

4 Keep the lines beginning with “SERVER” and “VENDOR”.

5 Remove all the rest of the lines in the file.

6 Add a line reading, “USE_SERVER”.

Example ..

The original file might look like the following:

The edited file should look like the following:

7 Save the aw_clientname.dat file and copy it to the C:\FLEXLM folder on all client machines. Rename the file on each client to reflect the client’s machine name (but leave the contents of the file the same on all client machines).

8 Verify that you can launch the software on each client machine by selecting Start > Programs > Autodesk > AliasStudio 2008.

Removing (uninstalling) AliasStudio software

To uninstall all of the installed AliasStudio 2008 products and components, follow the process below. To see the version number of the currently installed AliasStudio software, choose Help > About AliasStudio from the AliasStudio main menu bar.

Uninstalling AliasStudio removes the AliasStudio directory and its subdirectories, and possibly the Com directory and its subdirectories if they are not used by other products. It also removes AliasStudio keys and values from the Windows Registry.

The uninstall program also tells you which AliasStudio files or directories it cannot remove. It does not remove any user’s home AliasStudio directory (or subdirectories) or other user-created files. For example, uninstalling does not remove any directories or files at or below C:\Documents and Settings\“USER_NAME”\Application Data\Alias\AliasStudio. These directories are not removed because it is likely that the user wants to keep many of the files.

The uninstall program lets you view files that it cannot delete. You can delete them manually by dragging them to the Recycle Bin.

To remove (uninstall) AliasStudio

1 Choose Start menu > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs utility.

2 Choose AliasStudio 2008.

3 Click Remove. A Confirm File Deletion windows appears asking you if you want to completely remove the Studio software and all its components. Choose YES.

The Setup Status window may pause at 100% for a few minutes. Do not be alarmed and do not click Cancel. Due to the size of the software, removing it may take a few more minutes.

Note Add/Remove Programs cannot remove the online documentation files. You will need to manually delete these files and directories.

Installation troubleshooting

Brief description Question Solution

Exit prematurely Q. What happens if I exit from the installation program prematurely?

A. If you installed a prior version of AliasStudio, exiting from the installation program returns AliasStudio to the state it was in before you started the installation program. If you are installing AliasStudio for the first time, exiting from the installation program leaves your system in the state it was in before you began installation.

Hardware lock Q. Can I move the hardware lock to another computer?

A. Yes. To move the lock from one node-locked computer to another, attach the lock and install AliasStudio on the other computer, then copy the previous computer’s aw.dat file to the new computer. To move a lock from one floating license server to another, attach the lock to the new computer and do the installation and licensing procedure over.

If the hardware lock does not appear in the list of hardware IDs, check the following:

• Ensure the device is properly connected to your computer.

• If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, in certain cases you will not be able to install the HASP device drivers that support the new USB hardware locks (USB dongles). If you encounter this problem we suggest that you download and install the latest HASP4 drivers directly from the Aladdin support pages at www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/hasp4/enduser.asp. It is recommended that you use the Command Line Installation method to ensure proper installation of the HASP4 driver.

If your hardware lock suddenly won’t work...

Ensure you install the driver (Sentinel® for parallel port, HASP for USB port) for your hardware lock when you install Autodesk AliasStudio.

If you accidentally remove this driver, the hardware lock won’t work and you will need to reinstall the driver using the installer provided on the AliasStudio CD.

To install the Sentinel driver:

1 Restart your computer and log on as Administrator.

2 Insert the AliasStudio 2008 installation disk into the CD-ROM.

3 Navigate to the CD and find the Sentinel folder.

4 Double-click on D:\Sentinel\flexid.exe.

5 A Rainbow Technologies window appears.

6 Select Functions > Install Sentinel Driver.

7 Select OK.

8 Restart your computer.

Uninstall Q. Can I manually uninstall AliasStudio for Windows?

A. No. Use the Windows Control Panel to Add/Remove Programs.

Windows Registry Q. Does AliasStudio for Windows affect the Windows Registry?

A. Yes. Some configuration data is stored in the Registry; for example, the top-level folder of the AliasStudio installation.

Brief description Question Solution

Run two copies of AliasStudio

Q. Can I run two copies of AliasStudio at the same time on the same machine?

A. Yes. If your computer gets its AliasStudio license from a license server, it uses only one license even if you run multiple copies of AliasStudio for Windows on the same machine.

Kill AliasStudio Q. How do I kill the AliasStudio program when I can’t exit?

A. The Windows Task Manager lets you kill a task that for some reason no longer responds to your commands. To display the Task Manager, press the Ctrl-Shift-Esc keys. If possible, do not quit AliasStudio in this way, because you are likely to lose some of your work. Instead, click File > Exit.

Version info Q. How do I find out which version of AliasStudio I have?

A. In AliasStudio, click Help > About StudioTools; or on your desktop, right-click on the icon and choose Properties.

Start time Q. How long does it take AliasStudio for Windows to start?

A. This depends on the speed of your computer. In any case, AliasStudio for Windows should start within ten seconds.

Operating Systems

Q. Can I run AliasStudio for Windows on Windows 95 or Windows 98?

A. No. You must use Windows XP or Windows 2000 Professional.

Error messages Q. What do I do if I see errors when I try to start AliasStudio?

A. See troubleshooting license problems.

Hardware lock Q. What do I do if I lose the hardware lock?

A. You must buy a new lock from Autodesk. Consider buying insurance for your lock as you would for any valuable business property.

Hardware lock Q. What do I do if the hardware lock falls off or is removed while AliasStudio is running?

A. Reconnect it immediately after disconnection and AliasStudio operation should continue undisturbed. If the lock is off for more than five minutes, AliasStudio quits and displays:Lost connection to dongle or License manager, exiting.... Your work has been saved to the file lostlock. Look for a file called _m.saved or _checkpoint.saved. For a node-locked license, reattach the lock, restart the computer, and start AliasStudio again. For a floating license, reattach the lock to the license server computer, use FLEXlm License Manager to stop and start the license server software, then have all users on the network start AliasStudio again.

To investigate license errors

If you think that you have already installed a valid license, but continue to receive

No valid license found

or the system can’t find aw.dat or aw_servername.dat, try these steps:

1 Restart the license server or node-locked machine, in case you didn’t do it after you installed AliasStudio.

2 If you tried to run AliasStudio on a client or server, make sure that the time and date on the client and server are synchronized.

3 Review the licensing procedure to make sure that you completed all the steps.

4 Do the steps in Example of a license log file (page 71).

5 Do the steps in To check license errors with lmtools (page 76).

6 Verify that the directory C:\FLEXlm\ contains the file aw.dat or aw_servername.dat.If this file doesn’t exist, re-install licences as described in Activating the software from a license (page 44)Do the steps in To check license errors with lmtools (page 76).

To investigate further: errors for floating licenses

If you are running a floating license, try these additional steps:

1 Stop and start the license server software as described in To set up your floating license server... (page 35).

2 Do the steps in To check license errors with lmtools (page 76).

3 Restart the license server computer.

To investigate further: errors for hardware locks

1 Restart the computer where the lock is plugged in.

2 Make sure you attached the hardware lock correctly. See Setting system hardware properties (page 18) for installation details.

3 On a node-locked computer or license server computer, make sure that the parallel port works. If you can print from the port, it is working.

4 Do the steps in To investigate further: errors for hardware locks (page 70)

Example of a license log file

If you still have trouble with licensing, you can create a licensing log file to learn more about the error:

● For a node-locked license, do these steps on the computer where the error message appears.

● For a floating license, do them on the license server machine.

To examine the license error log file:

1 From the Windows Start menu, choose Programs > Command Prompt.

2 At the command prompt, enter:set FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS=2

3 Try to start AliasStudio by typing:Alias.exe

Because you set the environment variable FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS, the attempt to start AliasStudio creates a licensing log file that you can open and examine.

4 To list the files in the current directory a page at a time, enter:dir /p

The licensing log file is named flexnumber.log file, where number is the process identification number defined by the operating system. If more than one flexnumber.log file is present, choose the file with the latest time stamp.

Understanding log file error messages

When you create a licensing log file as described in the previous section, you can browse the file to find error messages to help you identify a problem.

The most common error messages are explained below. If multiple errors exist, only the first one found is listed in the log file. In these explanations, the term license file refers to the aw.dat file for node-locked licenses or aw_servername.dat (on the server) for floating licenses.

Error Possible solutions

FLEXLM checkout error: Invalid (inconsistent) license key. The license key and data for the feature do not match. This usually happens when a license file has been altered.

• Check the license file against the license file that you received. There may be a typing mistake in the password, expiration date, or license version. If it is a floating license, check to see if the HOSTID is spelled correctly.

• If you obtained a pre-release license for AliasStudio, also check the spelling of eval in the VENDOR_STRING.

FLEXLM checkout error: Feature has expired...

• Either the current machine date is later than the expiration date or there’s a typing mistake in the expiration date.

FLEXLM checkout error: Invalid date format in license file

• Check the license file’s expiration date for an incorrect format, for example, may-4-2006. The correct format is 4-may-2006.

• The license count digit may be absent: uncounted for node-locked, a number greater than 0 for floating.

FLEXLM checkout error: Invalid License File syntax.

• Check the license file against the license file that you received. There may be a typing mistake.

FLEXLM checkout error: No such feature exists.

• Check the license file’s spelling of components, package, and feature lines against the license file that you received.

FLEXLM checkout error: Future license file format or misspelling in license file.

• Make sure you have the newest version of FLEXlm license server (AliasStudio 2008 requires version 10.8).

• Check the license file’s spelling of VENDOR or any part of the string HOSTID number.

• Check that you typed \ instead of / at the end of a line.

FLEXLM checkout error: No SERVER lines in license file.

• For a node-locked license, check that the license file’s License Count is uncounted.

• For a floating license, make sure the appropriate SERVER and VENDOR/DAEMON lines appear at the top of the aw_servername.dat file (in the license file, the value of servername has to be replaced with the machine name).

FLEXLM checkout error: AliasStudio license in file appears to be corrupted.

• Check the entire license file for a typing mistake.

FLEXLM checkout error: Invalid host.

or

The hostid of this system does not match the hostid specified in the license file.

• Check that the machine possesses the right hardware ID/HOSTID number, and that it is correct and not misspelled. To check the hardware ID of the current machine.

• Check that the hardware lock (dongle) is plugged into the parallel port or USB port correctly.

FLEXLM checkout error: No server for this feature.

• sgiawd in DAEMON (Linux) or VENDOR (Windows) line may be spelled incorrectly.

FLEXLM checkout error: License server does not support this feature.

• Check the license file to see if the feature has expired, the license server has not yet started.

• Check if there is a mismatch between the version of AliasStudio and the version of AliasStudio identified in the license file.

• Try using the computer’s IP address instead of the hostname.

• Make sure the USE_SERVER lines on the client machine are in the right order.

FLEXLM checkout error: Cannot connect to license server.

• FLEXlm floating license software has not been installed or an older version of FLEXlm floating license software is installed. AliasStudio 2008 uses FLEXlm version 10.8.

• The license server daemon has not been started.

• SERVER servername has not been changed to reflect the name or IP address of the server.

• DAEMON or VENDOR is not spelled correctly.• (Linux) The sgiawd path is not right. The

default should be: /usr/aw/COM/etc/sgiawd

• Check the network connection on your client machine.

• Check that the sgiawd path is right. The default should be C:\Program Files\Common Files\Alias Shared\Licensing\etc\ (where C: is the drive where AliasStudio is installed).

• As a last resort, reboot your license server.

FLEXLM checkout error: Clock difference too large between client and server.

Make sure the time and date on the client and server are correct and synchronized. If the time and date of the client differs from the server by more than a half hour, the client may not be able to get a license.

To check license errors with lmtools

Licensing sometimes fails because your licensing software is using the wrong Flex ID / host ID (or server host ID). To verify that this is the case, you can use the lmtools program.

For floating licenses only, you can also use the lmtools program to check for errors not listed in Understanding log file error messages (page 73).

1 Open the Com\bin directory. By default, the directory is at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Alias Shared\Licensing\bin or Start > Programs > Alias > Common Utilities > FlexLM Licensing Utilities (if AliasStudio is installed on drive C).

2 Double-click lmtools.exe.

3 Choose Configuration using services. Your license server should appear in the box below this field.

Note If the license file is not in the default location, specify where it is. Choose the Configure Services tab, enter the license path under Path to the license file field, and then choose Save Service.

On some Windows 2000 systems lmtools.exe and lmutil.exe may fail to retrieve the ethernet HOSTID, returning a value of ffffffff and causing pre-

keying to fail. Obtain the Physical Address of your system by running the ipconfig /all command from the Command Prompt window.

Convert the Physical Address to an Ethernet Address by removing the dashes and converting all letters to lowercase.

For example, a Physical Address of 00-C0-4F-8E-F6-C6 becomes an Ethernet Address of 00c04f8ef6c6.

Contact Autodesk Sales Support, request a license, and provide them with the Ethernet Address.

4 Look under the System Settings tab to find out which host IDs are used by your system.Use this table to find out which field to look at, and what to compare it to in the license file. The license file can be found at these default locations:◆ C:\FLEXlm\aw.dat for node-locked licenses◆ C:\FLEXlm\aw_servername.dat for floating licenses(where servername is the name of the license server computer). If the value in the system settings doesn’t match the value in the aw.dat or aw_servername.dat file, either:◆ You typed in the wrong server name in the aw.dat or

aw_servername.dat file (use Notepad to correct the number)

◆ You were supplied with the wrong license information (contact Alias).

To check for additional floating license errors

To customize and view a status report on the floating licenses:

1 Choose Configuration using services.Note If the license file is not the default location, you must

specify where it is. Choose the Configure Services tab, enter the license path under Path to the license file field, and then choose Save Service.

2 Click on the Server Status tab.

3 Click on the Perform Status Enquiry button. It shows whether◆ the license server is up and running ◆ each feature line in aw_servername.dat is free of errors ◆ the license count is correct for each feature Examine these entries in the status information during the following steps:

4 In the top line, the number 7111 is a fixed value for the TCP port used internally by the licensing software. If you see a different number, make sure that you intend for that port number to be used. Otherwise, open the file aw_servername.dat and change the number to 7111.

5 In the next line of the status information, check that the correct path to the license file is listed.

Note If you didn’t install the license files in the default location, pay special attention that the path is correct.

6 The next line of the status information shows that the license server is running. If it isn’t, you’ll see an error message that begins like this:

lmgrd not running: Cannot connect to license server. The server (lmgrd) has not been started yet, or the wrong port@host or license file is being used, or the port or hostname in the license file has been changed...

◆ Ensure that you have a valid license file with the correct name.

◆ Keep handy the aw_servername.dat file, the Status information, and any log file error messages you examined previously. Call our Global Support Services department and provide them with this information.

7 Below the status information is a list of features in the aw_servername.dat file and whether the clients can use the features. An example follows:

Feature usage info:Users of Studiof: (Total of 3 licenses available)Users of AutoStudiof: (Total of 3 licenses available)

This example indicates that six licenses are available: three for Studio (floating) and three for AutoStudio (also floating). If aw.dat or aw_servername.dat has a typing error, you’ll see a message similar to this:

Confirming FLEXid dongle drivers installation (for hardware locks only)

For hardware locks, a FLEXid dongle driver enables communication between a node-locked or license server computer and its USB or parallel port. The USB or parallel port connector is where the hardware lock is attached.

From the initial installation start up window program choose Install Driver for Hardware Lock to install onto your computer. To make sure the driver was installed, do the following on the computer where the hardware lock is attached.

To check FLEXid dongle driver installation:

1 Open the folder where you installed the FLEXid dongle drivers software. By default, this install folder is at C:\Program Files\Macrovision Corporation\Macrovision FLEXid Drivers, where C: is the drive where the software is installed.

2 Verify that the install folder contains the following subfolders: flexid6, flexid7, flexid8, and flexid9.

3 If this is not the case, install the FLEXid dongle drivers as follows.

To install the FLEXid dongle drivers:

1 From the initial AliasStudio software CD installation window choose Install AliasStudio > Install Driver for Hardware Lock, or go to www.aladdin.com to download the latest driver.

2 Restart the computer.

Starting AliasStudio troubleshooting

Application Launcher

Application Launcher problem Possible solutions

You run appLaunch to start the Application Launcher, but AliasStudio starts without showing it.

• If there is only one product available in your license, that product starts. You see the Application Launcher only if more than one AliasStudio product is licensed or if there is a licensing problem.

How do I reset the Applauncher to choose another product that I want to launch?

Run Programs > Autodesk > StudioTools 2008 > Application Launcher and choose the product you want to launch.

When you start AliasStudio, the Application Launcher says that it cannot find a valid license.

• Ensure that a valid license is installed in eitherc:\FLEXlm\aw.dat orc:\FLEXlm\aw_servername.dat

(See Before you begin: checklist (page 22).)• Ensure that the license server is running.• Check your license file for typing errors.• Use the section Advanced license troubleshooting (page 70) to

pinpoint licensing problems.

You can start AliasStudio from the Application Launcher, but get a license error if you try to run the Alias executable directly.

• Delete the ALIAS_LICENSE variable if you understand licensing and don’t want to run any other AliasStudio products. It automatically starts a particular AliasStudio product: st (Studio), as (AutoStudio), ss (SurfaceStudio), or ds (DesignStudio). To disable this variable for Windows:1. From Start > Settings > Control Panel > System, click on the Environment tab. 2. Look for the ALIAS_LICENSE variable. If you see that it is set, delete it by highlighting it and clicking the Delete button.

• Your default product might be no longer available. In that case, choose another product in the Application Launcher, click Set Default, and click Save.
