Team Updates

Visual Identity Team participated in a training on branding, identity formation, and the art of the logo by Communication Strategist and Graphic Designer, Joanna Hallstrom. The team is now in the design process, working from Joanna’s sketches. By mid-December, we should have a new logo, new font family, new color family, and design set.

First Friends Team was trained by MCCI coach Sue Nielson-Kibey in a curriculum which engages guests in small, social groups. They team developed a guest tracking system, came up with the structure for inviting guests into small groups, and are readying themselves for a launch of some new groups at the beginning of February.

Family Ministry Team has been guided by MCCI coach Ranae Street. They have completed ministry summaries for children, students, and preschoolers and reviewed demographics of a one-mile and five-mile radius of the Woodbury Campus. The team is working on a family-driven paradigm by responding to challenges found in the demographic studies.

Community Connects Team was trained by coach Joseph Bishman in the triad approach to community outreach, which includes splash events, “invite-them-back” events, and then finally a deeper connection to something within the church. The team has brainstormed triad events and now is evaluating which ones best help us reach our mission of making new disciples of Jesus.

Worship Design Team spent a weekend with consultant Jason Moore on November 18 and 19. The team has trained in the design process and experienced a design retreat where they worked on a summer series. The team will now identify roles for team members and create a process for designing worship which we will use for the next two years.

Social Media Team has examined our current social media platforms to assess what’s working and what’s not working. They reviewed a conference training on best practices and are planning for a training with consultant Brad Aycock in January to teach church participants how to create social media buzz. They will be rolling out new platforms in January.

Name Clarity Team has completed its work, but the process continues as we work towards launching our new name, The Grove. The Core Team has secured name registration. The new Name will likely roll out in three phases:

Communications: Once the Visual Design Team has completed their work in January, we will cross the threshold to start using the name as we relaunch our new website, social media, and other print publications.

Business: During the winter, our new Financial Manager, Jennifer Schutz, will be charged with changing over the name on business accounts.

Facilities: The First Impressions Team continues to work, and throughout the winter and spring, they will be turning over signage and elements throughout the facilities.

The Core Team is also assembling a Transition Team which is charged to support the congregation in making meaning around the name. Stay tuned for details on upcoming events where we will both honor our heritage and also explore our new name and logo through stories, art, and discussion.

Stewardship Update

GOAL 1: At least 260

households will make

commitments.

252 households have

made commitments.

While we haven’t met this

ambitious goal yet, we are

thrilled to have 10 more

commitments than we

had in 2017.

GOAL 2: At least 121

households will step

up their giving.

121 households stepped

up their giving. We set

this goal with trust that

at least half of the

pledgers from last year

would step up, and you

responded in faith.

GOAL 3: At least 30

households, who

previously have not

made commitments,

will make a new

commitment.

49 households made new

commitments. Bravo to

our new families and for

those recommitting

anew. You stepped out

for your church!

Thank you to each person in our faith community who submitted a commitment card. Your commitment helps create a stable and healthy

church which can think strategically about its future.

SOMETHING NEW: As we continue moving forward, we’ll be starting a new tradition to celebrate our church community. While you need no incentive to give to your church, each year, pledgers will have an opportunity to order an annual commemorative mug(s). The 2018 version will feature our new name and logo. You may buy mug(s) for your home and/or you may donate mugs to the church for use at Sunday morning Coffee Time. Mugs are $5 each. Those who have pledged should look forward to an order form via mail to return if they are interested.

Hosting the Tubman Holiday Gift Program is a Christmas tradition at our church. It's a great opportunity to help make the Christmas season merrier and brighter for families struggling with domestic violence, mental health issues, and addiction recovery. We will be collecting donations of gifts and creating gift baskets for each family served by the Tubman organization. In addition, we will host a Christmas dinner and party for the Tubman clients on Thursday evening, December 4. Participating in this program is guaranteed to put you in the spirit!

Gift Donations are Needed While you are doing your Christmas shopping, why not put Tubman on your shopping list! Gifts can be dropped off at the Woodbury campus during the week of December 5-10. Look over the gift suggestion list on this page for ideas.

Volunteers are Needed

Come December 8-11 and help:

• Sort and organize gift donations

• Create gift baskets from a “Wish List” completed by the families.

• Help on December 7 with the party for Tubman families by greeting, supervising crafts and games, donating food, working in the kitchen, etc.

People of all ages can participate. Consider making this a part of your family’s Christmas traditions.

SIGN UP AT CHURCH. Questions? Contact Delores at 651-334-1240 or at [email protected].

The Not-So-Silent

Night Sunday, December 17, 10:30 am

All children ages 3-5th grade can participate in this program. Practices will be held on Sunday mornings during regular worship times on December 3 and 10. Children will feel most comfortable if they come to at least one rehearsal.

Watch for a sign-up for help at 9 am the morning of the program. We’ll have all the regular costumes plus a few extras!

HOUSING AND SUPPORT

FOR 50 WOMEN

AT EMMA NORTON RESIDENCE

MENTAL & CHEMICAL HEALTH

SERVICES THAT SUPPORT

WELLNESS & INDEPENDENCE

EMMA NORTON SERVICES Emma Norton Residence, located in St. Paul near downtown and the state capitol, offers permanent supportive housing to 50 single women. Also available is scattered-site single adult housing in the community with access to support services. Clients partner with case managers and support staff to set and accomplish individual goals towards achieving independence and self-sufficiency. Emma's Place, located in Maplewood, offers on-site permanent supportive housing to 13 single parents with three or more children, as well as scattered-site family housing in the community with access to support services. WPGUMC has supported and worked alongside Emma Norton Services from its beginning.

GRACE CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL This hospital in Haiti., founded in 1967, is recognized as Haiti's leading medical facility dedicated to the treatment of children with tuberculosis. Each year the hospital receives thousands of children who are suffering from TB, HIV and other diseases. OUTPATIENT CLINIC - In Haiti, affordable health services for both children and adults are hard to come by. In response to this need, INTERNATIONAL CHILD CARE has offered outpatient clinics at Grace Children's Hospital in Port-au-Prince since the mid-1970's. The clinics provide diagnosis and treatment for TB and HIV, as well as preventative health care like eye exams and vaccinations. WPGUMC sponsors a bed at Grace Children's hospital, and many of our congregants have traveled to Haiti on mission trips to help out at the hospital and clinics.

GOD’S CLOSET Transition Continues –

New Name, New Location For well over a decade, Woodbury Peaceful Grove has been involved in the God’s Closet free clothing ministry on White Bear Avenue, first with Epworth United Methodist Church and more recently, with The Beloved UMC. Now the clothing store is entering a new stage. It has moved to The Beloved Church, 1965 Sherwood Ave., St. Paul. It also has a new name: the Giving Rack, part of a newly formed community development center named the Eastside Resource Center. For the time being, the store is only open to shoppers for mini-shopping events on Monday and Tuesday evenings. These are being held in conjunction with Loaves and Fishes (a free meal program). As this goes to print, the hours for December and January are still pending, and it is anticipated that the regular hours (including daytime hours) will be established for the official opening in February. Former shoppers are being kept updated, and new shoppers are welcomed. VOLUNTEERS Many of the Woodbury Peaceful Grove volunteers have continued to volunteer in the new setting, both sorting clothes and working with the customers. If you are interested in joining this ministry or have other questions, please email Pat at [email protected]. DONATIONS In addition, donations are now being received both at the Giving Rack location and in the room set aside for that purpose in the Woodbury Plaza (near the collection bins) at WPGUMC. Please be aware, only good, clean, in-season clothing can be accepted at this time. (No housewares, books, toys, games, etc.) If you could mark the contents on the bag (i.e. women’s clothes, pants, toddlers) it would be greatly appreciated.

Brown paper grocery bags with handles are once again needed.

HARRIET TUBMAN SHELTER Tubman Shelter helps women, men, children and families struggling with relationship violence, substance abuse and mental health. Throughout the Twin Cities, Tubman provides safe shelter, legal services, counseling, elder care resources, youth programming and community education. Its mission includes guiding and sustaining individuals and families on the journey toward healing and restoration. Tubman is the state's largest provider of domestic violence services, with over 20% of all Minnesota shelter beds for adults and children experiencing family violence. The agency offers a full complement of services including shelter, mental and chemical health treatment, legal services, youth outreach programs, parenting education, resource counseling and community education. Each year 25,000 people in Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington Counties and the surrounding areas get the support and information they need to reach their full potential for safe, healthy and stable lives. WPGUMC holds the Tubman Christmas Party each year for the residents of Tubman.

Look for information on page 5 of this publication about how you can help this year!

CUB Scout Fundraising!

Our chartered Cub Scout Pack 56 demonstrated at the last pack meeting that they know how to put the “fun” in fundraising. Pictured here are one of our Webelos Den leaders David Webb and our Cubmaster Kyle Falconbury. I’m sure you will be able to recognize each one in these pictures. Okay if you are having a little trouble, I will tell you that our cubmaster got hit with more whipping cream. Still need some help? Well he also got hit with several toppings included. Each fall Pack 56 participates in a major fundraising effort to help support the pack and scouting in general. Cub Scouts sold wreaths and popcorn. The highest seller in the pack got to throw a huge pie in the face of our cubmaster. That honor went to Logan Kreidt who is a Webelos scout. Logan was also the biggest seller last year and definitely had the technique down.

The highest seller from each den was given the opportunity to “place” a pie in the face of their den leader. A few of you might recognize that it was David’s son Raymond who got to carefully place the pie in his dad’s face. Both Cub Scouts did an excellent job of demonstrating the correct technique to younger scouts. FUNdraising was a big success and everyone loved this special celebration as well as the prizes that were given out to the scouts.

Questions about scouting may be directed to Dick Hansen, Chartered Organization Representative for WPGUMC, [email protected].

Merry and Bright by Debbie Macomber Christmas is a season for the heart, and this is a story of what our hearts know, but our eyes have trouble seeing. Merry is a very busy lady with many responsibilities and no time for a social life. So her mother and brother arrange for an online dating adventure. At the same time, Jayson Bright, Merry's boss, hears from his friend that he should sign up for an online chat. They both like their conversations, and each plans to meet in person. Have fun reading as you see what happens! May your Christmas be Merry and Bright! Review by Jackie Easton

THE LITTLE FREE LIBRARY is on Steepleview

Road in the Woodbury Grove, near the pre-school playground. Please feel free to walk up to this little library to find a book that interests you or to leave a book that you've enjoyed and now want to pass on to the next person.

The Dogs of Christmas by W. Bruce Cameron This book is billed as a novel, but it is also a mystery. Mr. Cameron is one of the best writers about dogs around.

Josh Michaels is nursing a broken heart, but this is interrupted by a neighbor who drops off a very pregnant dog, Lucy, at his home. He is in no way prepared for this and calls a local animal shelter for help. Now we are introduced to a beautiful young woman, Kerry who is well versed in all things dog. Can a litter of Christmas puppies really change one man’s life? WELL, YES. I’ll give away no more secrets. You’ll have to find out for yourself. Review by Barb Haberman

Imagine by John Lennon I’ve never been a Beatles fan, but this book by John Lennon fairly sang to me.

A little pigeon sets out on a journey to send a message of hope and tolerance around the world. The text is lyrics by John Lennon, and illustrations are by Jean Jullien. This book dares to imagine a world at peace.

There is a forward by Yoko Ono Lennon. What could be more appropriate in this day and age? But the greatest thing about this book is that it fairly sings to you.

Do treat yourself to this incredible book. It may be a children’s book, but it has a lesson for the whole world. Review by Barb Haberman

Woodbury Peaceful Grove United Methodist

well-established endowment fund.

cause of your choice.

Plan A Gift to Your Church

Including your church doesn’t mean forsaking your children. You can provide for both. Simply

state in your will or estate the following:

I give Woodbury Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church Hope for the Future Endowment Fund a specific dollar amount or a percentage of my estate, to be used by the church for the designated need(s) of my choice: general purpose, scholarships, missions, capital needs, and/or worship

and music. (Suggested language for will.)

Your planned gift will make a much greater impact than you can imagine. It may also

provide you with significant tax advantages.

I give because, first of all, I have a personal relationship with God through our savior Jesus Christ. And because of that important relationship, I recognize that God has asked us to give back to his work on earth with our time, talents and possessions. God has also asked us to tithe a specific amount which is 10% of our income.

Most importantly, I have known generous Christian givers my whole life, starting with my parents, who tithed and gave their lives to God. They have set a good example for me.

I give cheerfully because God has given me everything that I have, and I want to give back to God in recognition and gratitude for my life, family and friends and also for Woodbury Peaceful Grove United Methodist Church. I am so thankful for the Methodist Church and its work here at home and around the world. That is why my local church is the primary focus of my giving. I feel very blessed to be a part of such a wonderful, uplifting congregation led by dedicated ministers.
