About this study
Do we manage to control our
weight? What happened to sports?
How many suffer chronic pain? Is
depression a problem in Europe?
How healthy are we actually? ...
Patients have massively discovered
the internet as a source for health-
related information. Do patients act
as doctor now with the help of
Doctor Google? ...
I have stress, you have stress, we
all have stress!!!!!!!!!! And we
mainly blame our jobs. How close is
Europe to a total burn-out? What do
people do to relax these days? ...
Are we on prescription drugs? What
about generic alternatives? What
medication do we keep in our
home pharmacy? Which medication
do we pack to go on holiday? ...
Are we too fat? Or are some too
skinny maybe? And if people face
weight problems, are they also
acknowledged? Learn about popular
diets across Europe and more ...
„And me‟ is all about personal
hygiene. What products do we
use, do we buy them in the
supermarket or the pharmacy, how
much do we spend on them ...
Do you want us to tell the story live?
Have we raised certain questions
you would like to ask us? Our
contact details are included and
we are happy to pay you a visit.
Do we all have a personal general
physician? What is (s)he like?
How often do visit them? Do
Europeans trust their GP? And how
well do GP‟s know their patients? ...

How healthy are we?
On average only 45% says to have a healthy life-style.
In Germany up to 66% admits to have an unhealthy way of living.
3 in 4 indicate not doing enough sports.
There are no exceptions across Europe.
40% considers themselves to be overweighed.
Only the Dutch & the Italians are somewhat more optimistic (around 30%), but still ...
Also chronic pain seems to be a massive problem (3 out of 10).
In France the problem is significantly larger (43%) compared to the other countries.
Furthermore, around 20% indicates to be depressed at least occasionally.
Depression is the most severe in the UK (33%) and is registered more among women.

How to read such table?
Scores for items on the left (e.g. gender, age and country) always add up to 100%.
For each of the items on top (e.g. blood pressure, cholesterol ...), both the positive answers and the
negative answers are displayed, as well as how they are distributed.
Significant differences between groups (e.g. age groups, sexes) are indicated in yellow.

Stress!!!!!!!!!!
Up to 20% (GE) reports high to very high general stress levels.
Women indicate relatively more stress than men.
Stress significantly drops once passed the age of 55.
Overall, the Dutch report least stress. However, in the Netherlands
they are also least stress resistant.
Work-related factors are relatively more stressing than private ones.
Especially the amount of work and the job content stresses people on the work floor.
Remarkable is that national politics are a major stress factor for the Italians.
Also Spanish are relatively more sensitive for this. So maybe it is a Southern thing ...*
The Spanish also score the highest stress levels on most work-related items.
Much more than other Europeans, they have experienced burn-outs in the past.
* Also in Belgium relatively high political stress levels were measured.
This might be explained by the political impasse at the time of the data collection.

To diet or not to diet ...
Overweight can be considered as a BIG problem.
However, the problem is not always recognized by the „sufferers‟.
31% of overweighed women and 48% of overweighed men do
not consider themselves to be overweighed!*
On the other hand, 10% of women who do not have overweight feel too fat.
Significantly more women are trying to loose weight and/or have ever tried so.
4 out of 10 people are currently trying to loose weight.
The Dutch diet significantly less (only 29%), the Germans significantly more (50%).
Of all diets, most have ever tried it with the help of a professional dietician.
Among the diet methods, the Weight Watchers‟ method is most popular & satisfactory.
* Overweight is defined as a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 25 or more;
the BMI scores were calculated based on people‟s self-reported weight and height.

To diet or not to diet ...
A well-considered diet starts in the supermarket.
34% (NL) to 59% (UK) of people check the nutritional valueof food products in-store.
Shoppers mainly check fat, sugars & the energetic value of food products.
Especially older people (55-69) and people suffering
overweight are interested in the nutritional tables.

To diet or not to diet ...
Specialists, general physicians and dieticians are considered to be
the most reliable sources when diets are concerned.
Only the Germans have significantly less faith in the dietician.
Although the partner is somewhat less reliable compared to the
professionals, the actual influence of the partner on the personal
weight is comparable to that of professionals.
Males consider their female partners as pretty reliable & influentialweight advisors. This is much less the case the other way around.

To the doctor
On average more than 9 in 10 has a fixed general physician.
Only people from the UK quite often do not have a fixed GP (28%).
French visit their GP most often (1/2 goes at least every 6 months).
The Dutch pay the doctor a visit least often.
GP’s are still predominantly male.
Only in Spain the female GP‟s outnumber their male colleagues.
Most GP‟s are between 45 & 54 years old.
In Germany, the average GP is somewhat older.
GP‟s know their patients very well (i.e. their name, age, family, job).
Belgian GP‟s score best in class, colleagues from the UK & Spain worst.
The confidence people have in their GP‟s is high.
Again Belgians score best. A personal relationship seems to be valued.

Doctor Google
70 to 80% looks up medical-related information online at
least a couple of times a year.
Women do this more than men.
And older people do it at least as often as younger ones.
Italians use the internet more intensively (45% at least monthly) for health related
information compared to their fellow-European patients.*
Doctors are still the most reliable health information sources (up to 90% trust).
But specialised sites on specific syndromes and medical portal sites already
manage to install trust on a large scale as well (above 40%) ...
and they are consulted almost as often as doctors!
* This is quite remarkable knowing that overall the Italian are even less internet mature than average.

My medication
The average number of prescription drugs currently
consumed is more than 2 in all countries.
9 in 10 keep medication in a home pharmacy.
Most prevalent items in home pharmacies are plasters.
Many also stock up pain killers, cough syrups, throat tablets and remedies for a
congested nose.
Up to 10% of the medication we keep at home is thought to be expired.
Italians and Spanish are best in class, reporting least expired products.

Also the attitudes towards generic medication vary broadly.
In France and the UK scepticism is much higher.
Also attitudes towards other forms of alternative medicine seem
culturally bound.

My medication
Going on holiday, Italians take the most medication with them
(88%), Germans least (66%).
Overall pain killers, plasters and remedies for diarrhoea are most often present in the holiday pharmacy. Only few French
travellers pack pain killers.
9 out of 10 is informed upfront about the vaccinations needed for their destination.
The general physician is the most important information source, but also the internet, the
travel agent and the pharmacist are sources that are consulted.
The doctor is by far considered the most trustworthy source for information about
holiday vaccinations.

With more than €40 a month, Spanish people spend the most
on personal hygiene. The British spend the least (less than €20).
Most of the hygiene budget is spent in the supermarket, because people visit supermarkets more regularly.
The pharmacy is only more popular for hypoallergenic products.
For condom purchases, the supermarket & pharmacy are equally preferred.
Only Southern Europe (Italy & Spain) clearly prefers the pharmacy for rubbers.
40% considers the pharmacy to be too expensive for personal hygiene products
whereas only 1 in 5 believes that the pharmacy offers better quality.
The range of products is also considered smaller compared to the supermarket.
