ISSUE 6: MAY 2019

I am delighted to welcome you to the first official edition of SmartSat CRC Newsletter. This will be a monthly communication channel for us to inform our partners of CRC updates, events and progress.

Following the successful announcement of the CRC and the celebration events that followed, we are now working hard on the establishment phase to get the company up and running as quickly and smoothly as possible. The Establishment Steering Committee will provide guidance and oversight of the establishment process. It will meet for the first time at the end of May to commence this process until the formal Governing Board is established.

We have already begun a series of research workshops to validate the research program and identify additional potential initial projects of the CRC. We hope to see many of our research and industry partners coming together to take part in these important events.

We look forward to working with you on this exciting journey to develop a powerful R&D engine for smart satellite technologies and space innovation for Australia.

PROF. ANDY KORONIOSCEO DESIGNATE

ISSUE 6: MAY 2019

On Monday 15 April 2019, the Honourable Karen Andrews, Minister for Industry, Science and Technology announced that the SmartSat CRC will be given Federal Government Funding to the value of $55 million through the Department of Industry, Science & Technology’s CRC program.

When combined with the $190 million investment from 84 partners, the SmartSat CRC will be the biggest investment in space industry R&D in our history and is set to meet the Australian Space Agency’s goal of lifting Australia’s space industry to $12 billion, generating an extra 20,000 jobs by 2030.

Minister Andrews said the SmartSat CRC will “foster the creation of next-generation space technologies and professions, and make Australia more competitive in the US$350 billion global space economy”.

This is exciting news for all those who have been involved in the CRC to date. We would like to thank all of our partners for their ongoing commitment to ensuring the success of the bid.

ISSUE 6: MAY 2019

The first SmartSat CRC Space Law Workshop was held at the Adelaide Law School on 10 May 2019. The event was very well attended and facilitated a great deal of discussion amongst participants from a large number of CRC partners. Prof Andy Koronios welcomed attendees to the event and highlighted the next steps forward with the CRC. The focus of the event was to provoke discussion and to identify issues that are of relevance to the space industry, from a law, governance and ethics perspective. There was also an emphasis on how to develop effective project teams addressing legal issues from the outset. Significant background work has already been done by the Adelaide Law School through the ANGELS Project, working with the Australian space industry (including startups and Primes) on identifying impediments to industry development and navigating the regulatory landscape.

Topics and presenters were:

Scott Schneider, Jones Harley Toole: Internet of Things

Prof Dale Stephens, Adelaide Law School: The relationship between defence and civilian space

Dr Stacey Henderson, Adelaide Law School: Human settlement of space

Dr Matthew Stubbs, Adelaide Law School: Space Mining

Joel Lisk, Cowell Clark: Regulatory models and the Space Activities Act

Prof Melissa de Zwart, Adelaide Law School: Unauthorised launch: Swarm and the Indian ASAT test

Alice Osborne, Adelaide Law School: A wrap up on the ANGELS project

SmartSat CRC partner, SCISYS Deutschland GmbH, SPACE division is one of the leading providers of integrated ICT solutions for the ground segment, specialising in control centres, monitoring & control systems, data processing, intelligent systems, data services, and integrated applications.

SCISYS Deutschland GmbH has secured two further orders from Thales Alenia Space France for the development and implementation of security-relevant elements within the Galileo Ground Segment. These orders are in addition to two initial orders valued at €3m announced on 24 December 2018.
