Hi Oldsmobile Club members:

The nominations for officers are on the agenda and I am happy to announce Bob Griffith is accepting the run for president. VP nominee now is Jeff Stanish. We do need a nominee for secretary, Dan Haggerty will continue as Membership/Treasurer. Please contact me or any board member shown on the front inside cover if you would like to be a nominee or nominate someone willing to participate. The Sept 6 meeting is the deadline for nominations. Also a car show chair-person is needed but is not an elected position, just volunteer. The ballots will be in the Nov/Dec Oldsletter with the results announced at our annual Christmas party.

The OCA Nationals are being held in Albuquerque, NM July 18-23. For those going Jon Manji has given some suggestions in his Ask Your Zone Director on page 7. If you are planning to drive to the Nationals I’m leaving Sunday 7-16 for Barstow.

The next event coming up after the Nationals is the Cadillac Club show and picnic on July 30th If you decide to go call me if you want to park together. Arrive around 10 am. This issue has coverage, starting on page 8, of our outing April 1 at Pack Rat Flat. We did go there as a club back around 2007 and it’s much different now as Gary spent most his days work-ing to make it special. It was good then as it is super good now!

May 5-7 was the BOP+ Cadillac and GMC show in Clovis. This year 10 Nor Cal members were in attendance. Dan and Elaine Haggerty and Linda and I went up to Bass Lake about an hour from Clovis to check out their facilities. We found it charming but prices were even more than the increased prices we found at Sea Crest. So a zone show there would be expensive and not too convenient as far as cabins and show field. It’s geared more for the summer family vacation spot. The Clovis show was great and I encourage our club and So Cal to attend next year as a substitute for our zone show. See this year’s show coverage starting on page 14.

We are actively looking for a location for our 2018 Zone Show but have not secured a place. My thought was to combine with the Central Valley Pontiac Club in Clovis in conjunction with their annual All GM Show held the end of April or the first part of May. This would be about 2 weeks prior to our regular mid May time that we usually have with our costal shows. The Pontiac contact, Andy Hoff, welcomes us and is open to any arrangement we may choose.Their event starts Friday night with a BBQ followed by the car show at the park Saturday with lunch and awards in the afternoon. By 3 pm they are done. The question is how do we want to incorporate our zone show with them. They book two hotels that share the same parking lot, The Homewood Suites and the Hampton Inn and they can handle the increase of our club attendance. There is plenty of room on the show field for us and Andy would be OK if we parked and judged our cars separately. This is a nice offer but I think that would take away from his show. We could have the Park the next day for our show but our members at the last meeting were opposed to the idea as this is a travel home day for those working. Another idea is to be a part of Andy’s show but incorporate our judges to look at our Oldsmobiles and have our awards banquet Saturday night. This task would be a time challenge if we went by our OCA type judging so a simple judging process would be a must. Your thoughts? President, Larry Ewing

Ask Your Zone Director By Jon Manji

It’s hard to believe, but just about this time next month, the OCA National Meet will be in full swing.

For those of you attending the Meet, I’d like to encourage you to attend the General Mem-bership Meeting on Saturday. The time and location of the Meeting will be listed in your registration packet. This is your club, and the meeting provides an opportunity for you to hear firsthand what is happening in your club. The meeting starts with introductions of the club of-ficers, followed by updates about club activities, voting on action items requiring the approval of the membership, and concludes with a question-and-answer session.

Also, if you have not yet volunteered to judge, I encourage you to do so. The judging experi-ence will expand your knowledge of Oldsmobiles and provide insight into how to better pre-pare your own Oldsmobile for all shows, not just National Meets. Please contact Bob Surran (505-263-7571) or Ken Halvorsen (505-263-3565) to volunteer.

Have a safe trip, and see you in Albuquerque!

June 7, 2017 Nor Cal Meeting MinutesPresident Larry Ewing called the meeting to order at 6:05 pm at Denny’s Restaurant in Hay-ward with 13 members in attendance, Larry asked Linda Sutherland to read the January 7, 2017 minutes.

Officer Reports:Vice-President: Denise LaCentra reported the Castello di Amorosa Winery in Calistoga was a good tour and everyone would like to repeat it next year.

Treasury and Membership: Dan Haggerty reported we now .have 118 members. Our treasury is solvent.

Health and Wellness: Linda Sutherland stated she had nothing to report.

Webmaster: Don Sutherland reported that our website had an up-tick of visits the last three months of 2016 and remains steady.

Newsletter Editor: Larry Ewing plans to add the Micke Grove flyer in the next newsletter. He stated that the overall cost of putting out the six issues of the newsletter for the year remains constant. He added that there has been no hits on the club library.

Old Business: Discussions were held about upcoming car shows: Father’s Day Car Show at Black Hawk Museum, Danville, CA, June 18th; OCA Nationals in Albuquerque, NM, July 18-23; Portal Park Cadillac Show, Cupertino, CA July 30; Roamin’ Angels Car Show, Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley, September 8-10; Rocket West, Pete and Christi Clayton, Hollister, CA, September 23; Micke Grove Car Show, Bear Creek Picnic Area, Lodi, CA, Oct 8th, Christmas Party, Cattlemen’s, Livermore, December 3rd.

New Business: Larry Ewing started discussions regarding a new location for the annual Zone Show. One possibility is to combine it with the Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac show at Bicentennial Park, Clovis, CA. He has spoken with the Southern California Olds Club about

Page 8: Inside This Issue; l Pack Rat Flat Tour l Clovis Trip l ...July 28-30: Sonoma - NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Nationals - (800) 870-7223 July 30: Portal Park Cadillac Show, Cupertino,

Minutes continued;this location and they will discuss with their membership and then resume discussions with Larry after their meeting. Discussion on how we want to do judging at a zone show and pros and cons were presented.Consensus was only one person out of 13 is interested in doing OCA type judging at our zone shows. People’s Choice is liked by all at our Micke Grove Show and a variation of that would be acceptable for our zone shows. Also most people were not interested in a Sunday show be-cause that’s travel day for many. Saturday night banquet preferred.

Micke Grove’s theme this year will be 7-7-7, based on the theme, participants that register cars with year’s ending in 7 will be charged a $7 registration fee. All others the regular registration rate applies. It was suggested those bringing potluck dishes switch this year, i.e. A-M bring desserts and N-Z bring salads. Volunteers will be needed this year for setting up tables, parking, and registration. Larry also reminded everyone this is an officers’ election year. Larry nomi-nated Bob Griffith for President, Jeff Stanish, seconded the motion. Jeff Stanish said he would be interested in the Vice President position. Dan Haggerty said he would continue as Member-ship/Treasurer. Linda Sutherland said she would not continue as Secretary, that position will be available. It was also mentioned again that we still need a new Car Show Chairman, vacated by Jon Manji.

Next meeting will be Wednesday, September 6, again at the Denny’s Restaurant on Industrial Parkway SW, Hayward.

Larry made a motion to adjourn and Don Sutherland seconded the motion. Meeting adjourned at 7:25 pm.

Minutes submitted by: Linda Sutherland.

It was a beautiful day in Auburn California on April 1. Joanne and Gary Cope opened their home to us and we had a wonderful picnic on their patio. After lunch we were treated to a tour of Pack Rat Flat, a name they came up with to describe their unusual landscaping. Twelve of our NorCal members attended and we also invited The Buzzard Racing car club that added another dozen people to the event. I took many pictures but you can’t get the sense of the overwhelm-ing impact of this place! Gary has collected over many years almost every thing to do with aftermarket speed equipment for Olds V-8 and GMC/Chevy inline engines. Many items are on display and do include other GM products with a strong emphasis on land speed cars of which Gary has a few recorded holders on display. There is an Oldsmobile, Pontiac room and an engine room along with a ‘50s era gas station and work shop, all full of period correct signs and parts.Words can’t do it, you have to be there! Our thanks to Gary and Joanne for hosting such a wonderful day!

A Tale of a Long Roof to a Short Road by Steve Spatola

On Thursday, 11 August the mighty (weak) Custom Cruiser made its way to Castle Automo-tive for a heart transplant and some muscle re-alignment. Out of allegory this means I took the Olds to a shop that pulled the engine and transmission and is sending those “organs” to separate shops for overhaul.I got the shell returned to me yesterday to wait the re-creation of what I hope is an improvement on the 1980’s lack of under the hood manhood! Today, my work began! I climbed inside the ample engine bay and scrubbed, power-washed and rinsed for four hours. The once oil crusted frame and engine cross member is now sparkling clean with the steely look of true steel. I also scrubbed the inner fenders and gave it my best for the radiator overflow container. The engine may take up to two months as Ron is about the last machine shop left in town. Dennis will have the tranny done in about one week. The engine is the venerable Oldsmobile 307, some 140 HP with 255 ft. lbs. of torque. B&R Engine of Stockton will be performing the machine work and rebuild. I hope to install a Comp Cam with .505 Lift with .210 duration and the rest of the package kit to include a double chain timing chain. Adding an Edelbrock 3711 intake which is supposed to be smog legal will add some much needed torque and some more HP! All Custom Cruisers came with the 4 bbl. carburetor and according to Mondello Olds this Y engine also has the roller cam and lifters, something Chevy didn’t have until much later and needed TPI to do it. This allowed Olds to supply highway gearing of 2.41 rear gears! The transmission, a 200R4 went to Paz Performance in Stockton to have Dennis do his magic of ensuring a smooth ride and a leak free one at that! A new radiator will be added to enhance and accommodate safe motoring. We plan to take the wagon to Albuquerque this summer for the Olds Nationals. As it will be hot on I-40 everything is being considered a must for safety and comfort. We also are attending the Mercury Cougar 50th indoor show in Tulsa, OK in April.

We will be towing the Cat to this one but will take it on the Route 66 cruise along the river we will gather for pictures too. Stay tuned for another report and some pictures. Above is a shot of work done. A little black spray paint will cover the sins of time. Thanks to Tap Plastics I fashioned a new below the radiator air dam. Using ABS plastic and the remnants of the OEM air dam I affixed the new over the old. This will help air to the radiator area as original design intended.Much time has elapsed since the foregoing para-graphs. In fact, nearly nine months between a pre-op and post operation works. Let me explain.

I had no intention of such a long time to redo the engine and transmission. Somewhere around the end of October a trial delivery was presented to my eager driving hands. The engine looked so bright and clean inside its factory cubby. I was excited and I needed a reason to start putting miles on so that the break-in oil can be used up and it would be safer to put some pedal to the metal. That opportunity was a drive to the Dixon, CA area Veterans Administration (VA) cemetery for a ceremony of my brother’s demise. My wife and daughter jumped in and we were on our way.

Page 12: Inside This Issue; l Pack Rat Flat Tour l Clovis Trip l ...July 28-30: Sonoma - NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Nationals - (800) 870-7223 July 30: Portal Park Cadillac Show, Cupertino,

Taking it easy keeping the speed around 60 mph I took the exit from I-5 to Hwy 12 heading west. I crossed Hwy 12 at the light and WHAM! The engine seized! All the looking and cussing couldn’t put the restart in the engine. I called a tow truck, letting others know I would be late to the services. Along comes my cousin Ronnie and he took Sonia and I to the VA and Val waited for the Olds to return to the shop. The wagon returned to my usual shop for a temporary haven, Paz Performance. The engine shop sent me to his warranty shop where they removed the heads and determined that the intake valves had seized from a lean burn situation. Obviously the 1984 PCU thinks I cannot improve this engine unless it has first say!The repair to the heads did not fix the lean burn. Here are the lessons in this scenario. Paz ran in to Lynn Welfinger (Mondello Oldsmobile) at the Bakersfield race track sometime in February. He asked Lynn if he knew anything about an ‘84 Olds with his 307 kit in it that is having prob-lems running correct. Lynn couldn’t recall but I followed up this encounter with a call to Lynn.Asking him “when you have such a lean burn problem and need to be able to smog an engine what do you do for the carburetor to comply with the PCU?” He said, “We send them to Jet Performance in Huntington Beach”. I called them and passed on my concerns andAway it went to Jet Performance with the specifications of my engine build, cam duration, intake manifold, piston type and head information. They will build the carburetor to properly run in harmony with the computer.Meanwhile the long roof sat in the air of Paz’s rack until the carburetor returns, it is installed and smogged. Before I left for the Cougar show on Easter Sunday I let Paz know that I had just got the new registration and smog requirement due on the wagon. When we returned I was notified that the Olds did indeed pass smog in flying colors. Wow! Was this a relief after all the money I had poured in the engine and the 200R4 rebuild?I was given an Rx for the car. Drive the s#$t out of it so it can break in. Meaning around 500 miles then change the oil. This small tale can’t convey my angst that if this did not work! What do I do with the car? I never came up with a solution in that I believe good mechanics solve bad problems. So far the engine has a lope that I have not experienced since my days of cheap gas and four speed trannies. I did bump up the rpm idle speed so that some cold morning doesn’t kill my thrill of a green light and an engine needing a restart. We took it to the A&W cruise in one Thursday evening. All ran well and I even got brave to see if the kick down would provide any trace of improved oomph that was missing in its original form. Yes, some spirit was there and with some controlled Elan it should improve.I learned that with smog burdened cars, there are not a lot of shops in California that will try anything fancy if you will be making this a street-able car. Do your homework. Mondello Olds-mobile provided top quality conversion parts. I wanted the car to be smogged so I can continue driving it; I wanted some reliability that later engines got with roller cam and rockers and some better performance. I think I have achieved this, time will really tell.Be sure to communicate exactly what you want and within any restrictions that are applicable to your desires or the law. I still would like to add on gauges to eliminate the idiot lights and a tranny cooler. I am not sure if any aftermarket stuff can be added because the sensors may not allow without messing up some smog requirement. The trans-cooler should be no problem, just get the car in the air.Alas! We have had to forgo that trip to Albuquerque Olds nationals. Some other family priorities came up that my grandson needed more than I did another trip on I-40. Another show closer to home and we will try and make it.The Cougar trip in April to the 50th Anniversary

show was fun. The rain in Tulsa cancelled the photo opportunities and the Route 66 cruise but a lot of fun and new friends were made at the indoor show on Saturday. 111 Cougars and 2 Comets took the arena in style! The trip to and from was fun though the home trip had head-winds and gusts to 60 mph! Ouch! Taking in the sights and museums along the Mother Road is always exciting. Since our last trip many businesses have closed so be sure to make the Route 66 journey sooner rather than later.

The Central Valley Pontiac Club put on their 19th Annual all GM (less Chevy) Show in Clovis again this year and it was a great success.Starting off with the Friday night Kitahara Buick Sponsored BBQ at the Homewood suites. Held at the pool patio next to the parking lot with a sample of show cars that were entries for the fol-lowing day show. The host hotel also had complimentary beer and wine inside the dining area until 6 when at that time the BBQ was served. A delicious Tri-Tip steak, with salad, roll, rice and string beans was our meal.

After dinner event organizer Andy Hoff introduced the President Bill Richards of the Central Valley Pontiac club who thanked us all for coming. Nearly 150 people were in attendance. Bill Richards also introduced Larry Kitahara the Buick dealer who sponsored the BBQ.Then the introduction of Jim Wangner who is known as Mr. GTO was having his 91st birthday so 2 sheet cakes were provided for dessert after we all sang “Happy Birthday”

The following morning we all met at Sierra Bicentennial Park which is a few miles from the host hotel. We were met by friendly Pontiac Club members who gave us a goodie bag and directed us to our pre-planned destinations on the park lawn.Nor Cal members present were Dan and Elaine Haggerty, Albert and Vicki Esquivel, Barb and Harv Goldhammer, Gerald Nickles, Linda and Larry Ewing and Ginger and Dennis Baker.Dennis is totally involved with the show judging and a very busy guy on show day with his cell phone and clipboard in hand. He is also is the MC who announces all the awards. Each class which represents 5 to 10 cars gets judged and the top 3 cars are awarded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.A special crew is selected to go pick from the show field of 90 cars and to come back with their favorite Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and GMC truck. Also Larry Kitahara got to choose his favorite vehicle.Jim Wangner was the presenter so every winner got a photo with Mr. GTO himself (on right).

When I joined the Olds Club in the late 80’s Faye and Mac were very active in our club. They had meetings at their home in Pleasant Hill and were always at our events in their ‘70 SX convertible. As Mac handled the club photos Faye did the club business and was a lighting rod when it came to doing the right thing. She will be dearly missed.President Larry Ewing
