Office of Senator Anderson

There is one time of the year when La Mesa Boulevard feels like

Winter Wonderland. Christmas in the Village is a parade orga-nized by the La Mesa Village Merchants Association and takes place every December on La Mesa Boulevard.

John Vigil, the Executive Director of the La Mesa Village Merchants Association, made sure everyone had a joyful and happy time at the parade on Friday, Dec. 12 despite the weather delay. The two-day event continued on Saturday to give an opportunity to those who could not participate on Friday.

Christmas in the Village has become a family tradition for many including Michael Pe-terson, whose family has been attending Christmas in the Vil-lage for nearly 11 years. “Ever since we started having kids, we would bring them down to [Christmas in the Village] and look around at the shops and watch the parade.”

This event also highlights outstanding local volunteer organizations that are work-ing hard in our community. La Mesa’s State Senator Joel Anderson provided Senate Certificates of Recognition to the volunteers of Project for Ondrea, who participated in the parade this year, for their effort to help Ondrea Ham-lett, an 18-year-old girl who has dealt with serious injuries since being struck by a car in December 2011. Ondrea is in great need of a wheelchair accessible van, and the Project for Ondrea team has dedicated time and energy to share On-drea’s story with the public to find people who can help Ondrea. Anderson said, “The La Mesa Village Merchants Association did a fantastic job with Christmas in the Village. I am touched by Ondrea’s story, and I am happy to be part of this great cause. John Vigil and his team did a great job with organizing this wonderful family-friendly event.”

Four of the five Board Members of the Al-pine Fire Protection

District were sworn into office for additional terms at the December 16 board meeting. At the meeting, District legal council Steve Fitch, adminis-tered the oath of office to all four at the same time.

County Supervisor Di-anne Jacob on a Su-

perior Court decision to allow sexually violent predator Gary Snavely to be housed in Ja-cumba Hot Springs:

“With this latest placement, the court is once again un-dermining public safety in the name of trying to rehabilitate a monster. Gary Snavely is a sick man who molested young girls. He belongs behind bars, not in a quiet, family-friendly community. Each time a judge allows one of these sexually violent predators to be housed in a neighborhood, it robs residents of peace of mind and costs taxpayers an outrageous amount of money.”

Help in updating the San Diego Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan

Please give us your input! The San Diego Multijurisdic-tional Hazard Mitigation Plan is a framework that guides communities in making deci-sions and developing policies to reduce or eliminate risk to life and property. It identifies the types of hazards that threaten our communities, evaluates our vulnerabilities and outlines a strategy to reduce or eliminate the risk posed by those threats.

This year, local, county and special district government agencies will update the re-gion’s plan for reducing the threat to life and property from man-made and natural disas-ters. The results of this survey will be essential in helping a regional working group under-stand concerns and questions the community has about the threats the region faces and will guide discussions as the group revises the San Diego Multi-jurisdictional Hazard Mitigation Plan. This year, the region’s 18 city governments, the County and several fire protection and water districts are working together to update the region’s plan for mitigating the impact of potential disasters. The group is asking for your input through an online survey. With 18 questions—16 of them multiple choice—the survey just takes a few minutes. It will help gauge residents’ level of disaster pre-paredness and awareness and help local governments set pri-orities for addressing potential disasters before they happen. Go to the City’s website and look under “What’s New” and click on “San Diego Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan Com-munity Survey - We need your input!”

A Christmas giftA guy bought his wife a beautiful diamond ring for Christmas.

After hearing about this extravagant gift, a friend of his said, “I thought she wanted one of those sporty four-wheel-drive vehicles.”

“She did,” he replied. “But where was I going to find a fake Jeep?”

Food for Thought

by Leanne Ely

We’re only a week away from one of the biggest dinners

of the year. (It seems like we were just enjoying our Thanks-giving dinners, doesn’t it?)

If you didn’t manage your Thanksgiving dinner properly, you might have (gasp) ended up growing sick of the left-overs. Let’s see to it that you enjoy the remnants of your Christmas dinner until the *very* last bite!

The following leftover ideas will help you to ensure that you enjoy what’s left of your next big holiday feast.

Turkey carcass broth. Once

you strip the turkey of its deli-cious meat, don’t you dare through the carcass away. Roast that sucker and turn it into a delicious soup (or stew).

Christmas Hash. Fry up some bacon in a large skillet. When the fat has rendered, add diced onions. When those are tender, add your leftover shred-ded turkey. Once that warms up, add something green like spinach, kale or whatever you have leftover, for some nutrition. When it’s warmed through, add salt an pepper and serve.

Turkey Curry. There is no rule that says turkey can’t be used in place of chicken in a curry. What a wonderful change that will be from all that traditional holiday food!

Resolve to give blood in January for National Blood Donor Month

The American Red Cross asks eligible blood donors to make a resolution to give blood regularly in 2015, beginning with

National Blood Donor Month in January.

National Blood Donor Month recognizes the importance of giving blood and platelets while honoring those who roll up a sleeve to help patients in need. It has been observed during January since 1970, and that’s no coincidence. Winter is an especially difficult time to collect enough blood to meet patient needs. Unpredictable winter weather can result in blood drive cancelations, and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, may cause some donors to be unable to make or keep blood donation appointments.

Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with O negative, A negative and B negative. With a shelf life of 42 days, red blood cells must be constantly replenished to maintain an adequate supply for patients. Individuals who come out to give blood Jan. 1 through Jan. 4 will receive a long-sleeve Red Cross T-shirt, while supplies last.

To learn more about donating blood and to schedule an ap-pointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Local American Red Cross Blood Donation Centers:

El Cajon, 1/5/2015: 1 p.m. - 7:15 p.m., El Cajon Heartland Masonic, 695 Ballantyne Street

Santee, 1/5/2015: 9 a.m. - 3:15 p.m., Civic Center, 10601 Magnolia Ave.

How to donate bloodSimply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App,

visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Turkey salad or stirfry. Fix a large green salad and top it with shredded leftover turkey. Or in your next stirfry, use turkey as the protein.

Alice Johnston’s Fabulous Thanksgiving Pie. One of our favorite holiday traditions is this wonderful leftover pie.

• Leftover gravy, heated• Leftover turkey, chopped• Leftover stuffing/dressing • Leftover mashed potatoes• Leftover veggies• Leftover cranberries• Preheat 375 degrees.

In an 8 to 9 inch pie pan, press the leftover stuffing into a bottom to make a pie shell of sorts. Next, make a layer of

potatoes, then veggies. Add the chopped turkey to the heated gravy and mix well. Pour that turkey mixture into the middle of your pie and put it in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes or so until completely heated through. Serve with leftover cranberries. YUM!

No matter how you have your leftovers, enjoy the food and the time with your family.

If you’ve been missing eating normally (yeah, the holidays will do that!) and need a little veggie boost, our Just Juiced Greens are just the ticket. You get 4 servings of veggies & fruit in every serving! LOVE this stuff, wouldn’t be without it. You need it!

Dear Dr. Luauna — Treasurer in Heaven

Dear Readers,

As this year is winding down, 2014 and the

new one prepares to dawn, 2015, wow, I almost can’t be-lieve it! I like to take stock and think about all the wonderful things the Lord has done throughout the past year. It was a year of traveling, open doors, filled with wonderful events and footsteps into the

future; but the most important thing to me has been the people.

Over the past few months in our inner city church, so many wonderful people have come through the doors. My heart has been deeply touched, each one is a treasure to me and a treasure in Heaven.

One precious man was invited by his instructor; he would come in and sit in the back row, carrying his Bible in his hand. Last week, during one of the services, I asked each person to give a Bible verse from memory, as I went around the room, it was his turn. He said, “I don’t know any verses from memory.” I said, “Ok, I’ll give you your first one, ‘Jesus wept.” He proudly repeated after me, “Jesus wept, but I don’t know where it is.” He returned the next service, with Bible in hand and gave his one Bible verse; yet he is hungry to learn more. This man has been through so much in his life; he comes to every single church service and he started inviting his friends. Sometimes, he will just sit there in the back row, crying as the power of God is touching his life. To the world, he may not be rich or famous, but in Heaven the angels rejoice over this precious gem.

Young, single mothers have been coming with their small children; some with new babies. My heart so touched by them also. One precious mother, rides the trolley and the bus, we see her walking in with a stroller and her two toddler’s in tow, and she’s early every time. When she received Jesus, I said, “To grow as a Christian, be here every time the doors are open.” She has found the pearl of great price.

Or the banker with a 25 million dollar line of credit, who thinks money and success is everything, then he finds himself behind prison walls. There he discovers, he too, is in need of a Savior. Then the doctor, who found success and everything the world had to offer, still empty inside and said, “Is this all there is?” He came to Jesus, and found true success!

This is what ministry is all about, the people who God loved so much. People are the only thing we can take with us to heaven. Matthew 6:19-21; Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Every single one of the people who walk through our doors are important to God and treasures to me!

InspirationDo Christmas temptations really count?

by Dr. James L. Snyder

All my life I have been careful about suc-cumbing to the temp-

tations of life. I have not always been successful and have fallen into some. Oscar Wilde famous-ly said, “I can resist anything except temptation.” We all know the end of his life.

It is not being tempted that is difficult, because everybody is tempted. The hymn writer said, “Yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin.” So the tempta-

tion is not sin, it is how I react to that temptation.

I must say I have had some abundant help from the Gra-cious Mistress of the Parsonage whose major role in life is to keep me from yielding.

But this is the holiday season, celebrating Christmas and ev-erything that goes with it. One major activity that goes with this kind of holiday is eating.

Now eating is something we

do all the time; at least I do. It is not the eating; it is what I am eating that poses some prob-lems. The Christmas holiday of-fers so many cookies and cakes and pies that I cannot eat them all, but I try. Oh boy, do I try.

“Don’t you think you have had enough cake?” She asked me in the middle of eating a piece of cake. If my mouth was not full with cake, I would like to tell her, “No, I don’t think I have had enough cake and when I do I’m certainly not going to tell you.”

You all know where that will get me!

Where I get into trouble is when my wife and I go to some Christmas party. I feel as a responsible partygoer I need to taste all of the cake and cookies that the gracious host has pro-vided for us. I believe it would be insulting to go to a party and not eat all of the party vittles, at lease sample them.

My wife has this strange no-tion that when I go to a party, particularly when she is ac-companying me, the less I eat the more I honor the hostess.

My idea is simply that if it is a holiday party with Christmas cakes and cookies the calories are on holiday and do not count. At least I am not count-ing them.

It is after the party that I en-counter the greatest difficulty. That is, explaining to my wife why I ate so much cake and cookies and pie.

She does not very much accept the, “I just do not want to be rude,” explanation. It is when I get home that I have to deal with the Christmas tempta-tions I yielded to at the party.

For several years and I plan to use it this year, I always respond by saying, “I’m going to make a New Year’s resolution not to eat cake anymore for the rest of the year.”

How I get away with this New Year’s resolution is that I make it two days before the end of the year. And so, for the rest of the year, which includes two days, I will eat no cake or cookies or pie while the world stands.

The Bible Says, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).

Temptations never count un-less for some reason I yield to the temptation.

War and its after-math often have un-expected cultural ef-fects, historian says

The United States has been so militarily influen-

tial throughout the world that it was invading other countries before it officially existed, says American history scholar Chris-topher Kelly.

In 1741, military forces from what would become Ameri-can soil conducted large-scale operations in Cartagena, Co-lombia, and the U.S. has been busy changing other parts of the world since then, Kelly says.

“Andor ra, Bhutan and Liechtenstein – those are the only three of the United Na-tions-recognized 194 nations that the U.S. has not invaded,” says Kelly, co-author with Brit-ish historian Stuart Laycock of “America Invades,” www.americainvades.com, a global tour of Americans’ military impact around the world.

“While America’s cultural and economic influence has been ubiquitous, we ultimately decided to define an American invasion as an ‘armed attack or intervention in a country by American forces.’ ”

Naturally, there are bound to be holiday tales amid all the action throughout the past few centuries. Kelly and Laycock share a few that occurred dur-ing Word War II.

• An unlikely Battle of the Bulge Christmas dinner. This battle was a last-ditch effort from Hitler during the waning days on the German front. On Christmas Eve, 1944, near the German-Belgian border,

a woman and her 12-year-old son were confronted by three wounded American soldiers on their doorstep. She let the Americans inside, even though it was considered treason by the Nazi regime. Later, four German soldiers knocked on the cottage’s door, and the woman provided shelter for them, too. She collected every-one’s weapons, insisted upon peace, and shared a chicken for dinner. The next day, the Germans told the Americans how to safely navigate back to their side. The story was told in a Reader’s Digest article by the woman’s son, the late Fritz Vincken, who reunited with one of the soldiers in 1995.

• Operation Christmas Drop is a charitable tradition forged by war. The Japanese front was a simultaneously brutal and tedious effort, made more challenging by the many small islands dotting the South Pacific. One of the results was the creation of Andersen Air Force Base in Guam. An air crew from the base flying over the Micronesian atoll of Kap-ingamarangi near Christmas 1952 spotted islanders wav-ing to them. The crew swiftly gathered miscellaneous items on the plane, placed them in a container with an attached parachute and dropped the goods to the islanders. The Christmas Drop has since become the longest running U.S. Department of Defense mission in full operation, and the longest running humanitar-ian airlift in the world.

• The odd Christmas tradi-tion of KFC in Japan. America and Japan have been bound to each other since the war and one of those bonds includes Yokota Air Base, originally a facility for Japanese forces but eventually taken over

by the United States during combat. Since hostilities have ended, strong cultural bonds have developed including a Christmas Day tradition of a meal from Kentucky Fried Chicken for the mostly Bud-dhist nation. “Kurisumasu ni wa kentakkii!” – Kentucky for Christmas! – was inspired by a group of foreigners who were searching for Christmas turkey. Ultimately, they settled for the next best thing, fried chicken.

More than 3,000 guests at tended Senator Joel An-

derson’s Holiday Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 10. The event was held at Toyota of El Cajon, who donated their space for this event.

This free event was an op-portunity for Anderson and his staff to meet with constituents and hear ideas on new legisla-tion for 2015.

Anderson said several of the bills he introduced in the past originated from suggestions from attendees at this annual event.

“My job is to make govern-ment work for those I represent. The Holiday Legislative Open House makes me accountable to my constituents, and I ap-preciate everyone who took the time to attend and shared their ideas and work with me to improve our state. Forty to 60

percent of my bill ideas come from this event. My constitu-ents’ ideas make me a better legislator,” said Anderson.

Donated hors d’oeuvres and refreshments were provided, including high school Culinary Arts students who all served their delights. Granite Hills, Santana, Valhalla and Gross-mont all participated.

Many businesses also vol-unteered their food and time to serve refreshments: Rubio’s El Cajon, Cafe Merlot, Chick-fil-A, Eastbound Bar & Grill, Souplantation, Jersey Mike’s, Hilliker’s Ranch Fresh Eggs, Nothing Bundt Cakes, PWI, The Art Institute, A-Maize-ing Kettle Corn, Dream Dinners and The Hills Local Pub.

Anderson’s Senate district includes Poway, Santee, El Ca-jon, La Mesa and most of East San Diego County. He was first elected to the state Assembly in 2006 and to the state Senate in 2010.

‘Annie’ a glittering gift under the tree

Review by James Colt Harrison

For most of our lives we have been reading about Little Orphan

Annie in comic strips, beginning in 1924 from author Harold Gray. It has been great fodder for theatrical productions and films. Not only is the latest Annie from Columbia Pictures with stars Jamie Foxx and little Quvenzhane Wallis a stunning toe-tapping musical version, but there have been several other previous films made that were not as good. Plus, there was the original 1977 hit Broadway musical from which much of the music comes in the latest version.

The version most people remember is the 1982 Co-lumbia film that starred Albert Finney and Carol Burnett. Aileen Quinn starred as Annie. That film was directed by the formidable Oscar® winner John Huston. As we can see, Annie has been entertaining audiences for decades.

Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhane Wallis star in Annie. Photo Credit: Columbia Pictures / Village Roadshow

Because the original story and setting (1930s) was getting a little long in the tooth, the producers felt the show needed a bit of a re-polishing and updating to appeal to today’s audience’s taste in music and humor. They brought in British actress Emma Thompson to update the script and add some much-needed humor. She col-laborated on the screenplay with director Gluck and Aline Brosh McKenna, turning out a script that relied on bringing out the humorous side of the characters. Jamie Foxx, now called Will Stacks instead of the time-worn “Daddy Warbucks” uses dead-pan humor to his ad-vantage. He’s still rich, but he’s a strong billionaire from the 21st Century now. Foxx is a likeable person in his own right, but he has to play a somewhat dis-agreeable man who frequently makes us laugh because of his seriousness.

The story, of course, remains the classic one where Annie is sort of “rescued” from the

hands of mean and acidic Miss Hannigan, who runs a home for foster children. Cameron Diaz plays Miss Hannigan ag-gressively over the top and exaggerates her every gesture and facial tick. Overdoing it too

much, she should win the Ham Actress Award of the Year.

Stacks saves Annie’s life by saving her from getting run over by a truck. They bond and Annie becomes the catalyst for Stacks’ running for New York Mayor. Stack’s slimy campaign manager, played humorously by handsome Bobby Can-navale, encourages him to use Annie to boost his polls num-bers. Naturally, this complicates their relationship.

The music is tuneful and happy and has been updated with altered lyrics to today’s rhythms. Kids today can relate to it easily. It’s toe-tapping even for the adults, who will enjoy hearing favorites “Tomorrow,” “Little Girls,” and this reviewer’s favorite, “It’s A Hard Knock Life” featuring a new down beat and cadence. The original music is by Martin Charnin & Charles Strouse with newer

songs written by Greg Kurstin, Sia, and Will Glick.

A funny, happy musical is perfect for the holiday season.

This new film version of the perennial favorite Annie is a glittering gift under the tree. Go see it and sing along with all the heart-warming tunes.

Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.A hearing on the petition will be held in this court on 1/8/2015 at 1:30 PM in Dept. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the

property. You are encouraged to inves-tigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder’s office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contact-ing the county recorder’s office or a title insur-ance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mort-gage or deed of trust on the property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this Notice of Sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call 714-573-1965 for information regard-

ing the trustee’s sale or visit this Internet Web site http://www.qualityloan.com , using the file number assigned to this foreclosure by the trustee: CA-14-632310-HL. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the tele-phone information or on the Internet Web site. The best way to verify postponement informa-tion is to attend the scheduled sale. The un-dersigned trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the property address or other common designation, if any, shown herein. If no street address or other common designa-tion is shown, directions to the location of the property may be obtained by sending a written request to the beneficiary within 10 days of the date of first publication of this Notice of Sale. If the trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder’s sole and exclu-sive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the trustee, and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. If the sale is set aside for any reason, the Purchaser at the sale shall be entitled only to a return of the deposit paid. The Purchaser shall have no further recourse against the mortgagor, the mortgagee, or the mortgagee’s attorney. If you have previously been discharged through bankruptcy, you may have been released of personal liability for this loan in which case this letter is intended to ex-ercise the note holders right’s against the real property only. during these chilly months. I have a mild temperament and a moderate energy level, so I enjoy cuddling and I enjoy going for walks. I’d probably prefer to be in a quiet adult home, but I’d also be comfortable in a home where the kids are older and very considerate of my small size and my mild nature. I know how to sit on command, and I’ve already been house trained. I get along nicely with other dogs, and I’m a very respectful boy. Everyone here at the El Cajon Animal Shelter agrees that I’m an all-around great guy! Won’t you please come visit me? They have a lovely play yard here where you’ll have a chance to hold me close and see what a great little dog I am. As a cat owner, you do your best to take care of your pet. But there

may be some things you don’t know about cats that could affect its health and happiness.

For example, a survey con-ducted by Wakefield Research on behalf of Purina ONE found that only 3 percent of respon-dents thought that playfulness is a sign of a healthy cat. Here are eight other cat facts that can help you keep your kitty thriving.

Cats require more protein than dogs. Dietary protein is digested and broken down into individual amino acids. While dogs require 10 essen-tial amino acids, cats require the same 10 plus one more: taurine.

Cats need physical activity to maintain their muscle tone, alleviate stress and burn off excess energy. Yet 76 percent of cat owners say their cats spend less than half of their time being active. Consider taking your cat out for a walk on a leash – it keeps them ac-tive, gives them a chance to explore and is a great sensory experience.

Nearly half of cat owners (45 percent) think their cats may be overweight. Remember, an ideal body condition is important for your cat’s overall health. To determine this, you

How well do you know your cat?want to be able to feel its ribs with gentle pressure. If you can’t, it might be overeating. If you can see its ribs, it might be too skinny. Also, with the cat in a standing position, you want to see a waist behind its ribs when look-ing down at the

sight lines.

Cats can experience “whis-ker stress,” an annoying sensa-tion that’s caused when their whiskers rub up against the sides of the bowl. To prevent this, try feeding your cat from a flat dish, large enough to hold a day’s worth of food.

Most cat owners (98 percent) consider their cats happy, but it may be difficult to read a cat’s body language and non-verbal cues. When a cat’s tail is point-ing upward, with tip slightly bent or pointing forward, they are in the friendly mood. But, if the tail is in a similar position but with raised hair, a cat could be angry.

To see the differences a healthy diet can make, try switching your cat’s food for just 28 days. Check out the Purina ONE 28 Day Chal-lenge at www.purinaone.com/onesmartchange and receive a coupon to help you get started.

back, and a minimal amount of abdominal fat when viewing from the side.

Cats enjoy a variety of tastes and textures, so wet and dry foods work well together. Dry kibble helps keep teeth clean. Wet food has a protein and moisture content that’s close to a wild cat’s natural diet.

Most cat owners (81 percent) know bright eyes are a key indicator of cat health. Another indicator? A shiny coat. And what you feed your cat can make a difference. Within three weeks of switching your cat to a food optimal in omega-6 fatty acids and essential vitamins and minerals, such as Purina ONE, you may notice brighter eyes and a shinier coat.

Cats like to have a clear view of their surroundings in order to detect the approach of rivals or predators, so keep your cat’s food dish out in the open or in a high spot to maximize
