The Ranger School has accomplished many things during thepast 10 years that have helped preserve its status as the premiereforest technology program in the country. We have increased en-rollment, developed and implemented an elective surveying con-centration, and improved the forest technology curriculum. Webegan an assessment program to measure the effectiveness of ourefforts and involved our faculty in professional development andcommunity service activities. We also have completed a major cap-ital construction project.
Without a doubt, none of these successes could have been ac-complished without the significant financial support from ouralumni, colleagues, friends and neighbors.
The outpouring of financial support for our small institution lo-cated on the northwestern edge of the Adirondack Park has beenoverwhelming, especially given our relatively small number ofalumni — approximately 2,200 individuals.
In 1991 the Ranger School Endowment was started. The en-dowment was a new concept for the Ranger School, but it quicklygained support among our alumni. The fund has grown each yearto its current level of approximately $275,000. The endowmentprovides scholarships for our students, field and technical equip-ment for our classes, and supports faculty development.
Additionally, some of our alumni have created scholarship en-dowments. Frank Buholtz ’47 presented us with a gift of land sev-eral years ago with the expectation that the land would be sold andthe proceeds used to fund student scholarships. Sale of the prop-erty raised more than $200,000 and represents the single largestgift received by the Ranger School. Mr. Buholtz, who died in 2001,requested that awards from the Buholtz Endowed ScholarshipFund be given in memory of C.E. Farnsworth, who was on the fac-ulty at the Ranger School when he was a student. Daniel Cooke’55 has endowed an annual full-tuition scholarship for a deservingRanger School student.
In August of this year, we launched a campaign to raise$300,000 to help purchase furnishings and equipment to put thefinishing touches on our $6 million capital construction project. Infive months we raised nearly $100,000 in gifts and pledges — a re-markable show of support from our neighbors, friends and col-leagues. Many gifts have come from non-alumni who have, in someunique way, been impacted by the Ranger School. A lot of ourNorth Country neighbors have contributed in recognition of theservices the Ranger School provides to the local community.
The Ranger School is only one of many programs at the Col-lege of Environmental Science and Forestry. Each one, like ours, has students who would not be able to attend college withoutscholarship assistance. Each has special needs — for class and fieldequipment, for the latest journals and other library resources, andfor travel and other activities that support and supplement studentlearning experiences. Each has dedicated faculty members whobenefit from research support and professional development activ-ities, which in turn enhance their classroom teaching.
To those of you who provide support to ESF, I can tell you thatyour dollars do matter. It is your generous and continuous supportthat helps to make our programs successful. Thank you for yourcontinued support of all of ESF’s programs and a very specialthanks to all who have supported the Ranger School.
Christopher L. Westbrook returned to the Ranger School in 1989 asprofessor and later was appointed director. He also directs the SummerProgram in Field Forestry for the Faculty of Forest and Natural Re-sources Management. In 1996 he received the Chancellor’s Award forExcellence in Teaching.

Live from New York — It’s ESF!
It’s not unusual for the folks at ESF’sRanger School to receive "funny" phonecalls from alumni, so when a caller identi-fied himself as being with the NBC showSaturday Night Live, Kathie Nevil, pro-gram aide, was not about to take the bait. The caller assured her he wasn’t jokingand provided a number at which to callhim back.
Jamie Savage, associate professor, called the alleged SNL representative backand found out it was the real deal. PropMaster Greg Tull was looking for items toestablish a classroom setting for a sketchon the January 18 show. SNL found thecollege as a result of an Internet search for“forestry,” said Savage.
A few more phone calls and an hourand a half later, Savage had a box full ofmaps, pine cones, leaf mounts, RangerSchool mugs, a hard hat and maple syrupready to go to New York City. RangerSchool stickers were slapped on many ofthe items so the college’s name would bevisible on camera.
According to Savage, they had no ideawhat the skit was about except that itwould take place in a classroom setting andinvolved trees. "When I was on the phonewith Greg I could hear people in the back-ground reworking the script," he said.
The props wereused in a sketch ti-tled, “The Falconer,”the story of a societydropout living in thebackwoods with acompanion falcon. When the man istrapped under a fallentree, he sends the fal-con for help. The fal-con goes to a collegeand instead of gettinghelp ends up at a
sorority party. Not only did a number of the items
sent get used (look carefully and you cansee a Ranger School mug and a bottle ofsyrup), the college’s name was workedinto the skit when guest host Ray Liottawelcomes the falcon to “the College ofEnvironmental Science and Forestry” andintroduces himself as the “dean of log removal.”
The nod from the award-winningcomedy show caused quite a stir at theRanger School and on the main campus.Christopher Westbrook, Ranger Schooldirector, said many people have contactedhim to say they saw the skit including aCranberry Lake summer resident andfriend of the Ranger School in Alabamawho sent the following e-mail:
“Dear Sir,We watched your elegant performance
on SNL. I had difficulty recognizing youroffice. I also wonder where that Sororityhouse is located.”
“It was fun,” said Westbrook. “It wasjust a fun thing to have happen.”
ESF Receives High Marksfrom U.S. News & WorldReport
ESF was ranked among the nation’stop universities in U.S. News & WorldReport’s annual list of America’s best col-leges for the second year in a row.
ESF was ranked 36th on the list of the top50 public national universities in the doc-toral category, an improvement over lastyear’s ranking of 39. The college wasranked 4th for universities having thehighest proportion of classes with fewerthan 20 students.
College president Cornelius B. Mur-phy, Jr. said he was pleased with the col-lege’s improved rankings. “It is a furtheraffirmation that ESF is a leader in its fieldand a testament to the faculty and staffthat ESF is rated so well,” he said. Mur-phy cautioned that the rankings are onlyone indicator of the quality of the educa-tion provided by a college or university.
Here is how ESF fared in other categories:• Among universities with the lowest ac-
ceptance rates, indicating a more selec-tive admission process (ranked withPennsylvania State University and Rut-gers).
• ESF’s graduation rate is the 29th high-est among Public National Universities— Doctoral (along with Georgia In-stitute of Technology, Indiana Univer-sity and Michigan State).Overall ESF was ranked as a Tier 2 in-
stitution — the group just below the na-tion’s top 50 universities. This categoryalso includes the University of Minnesota,Ohio State, Michigan State, Virginia Techand Texas A&M.
New Biotech Major DebutsESF students will have an opportunity
to focus their studies on a new area nextfall, when the college offers a major inbiotechnology.
The college’s approach to the subjectwill be unique because it will focus on the environment, unlike most biotech programs, which are geared toward medicine or agriculture, said ESF’s Dr. William A. Powell.
“Biotechnology is defined as the use oforganisms, cells or cellular molecules to

produce a service or product for the better-ment of humankind,” Powell said.
ESF already has an array of projectsunder way, including research in the area ofphytoremediation (using plants to clean uppollution) and experiments in genetically al-tering American chestnut trees to makethem resistant to the blight that has wipedout most of the trees across the country.
Although the new program will be ad-ministered by the Faculty of Environmen-tal and Forest Biology, students will take aninterdisciplinary approach to the subject, with classes including chemistry, and forestand natural resources management.
Powell, director of ESF’s Council onBiotechnology in Forestry, said studentseventually will have an opportunity to workin the new Central New York Biotechnol-ogy Research Center, which will be con-structed in Syracuse with $20 million instate funding. ESF has been designated asa lead academic partner with SUNY Up-state Medical University.
“That would be a great place for thesestudents to do their internships,” Powellsaid. “A big part of this program is going tobe experiential. We will encourage intern-ships and a research project in an ESF lab.”
Alumnus’ Gift Names NewLab in Baker
In the 1970s, ESF helped one woodproducts student develop the skills hewould need in the business world. Threedecades later, he’s helping provide the toolsfor tomorrow’s leaders.
Richard Ahearn, construction manage-ment and wood products engineering classof 1974, donated $50,000 to name theConstruction Method Lab in Baker Labo-ratory. The donation is the second largestgift the college has received toward theBaker rehabilitation project.
“The most important thing the collegetaught me was to think in a logical mannerand solve the problems, be they technical orpolitical, that crop up in day-to-day busi-
ness,” said Ahearn. As president of Ahearn Holtzman Con-
struction in Port Chester, NY, he hopes toensure the next generation of students hasthose same opportunities available. “Thestudents need state-of-the-art equipmentto give themselves the knowledge basethey’ll need when they get out into thebusiness world.”
While at ESF, Ahearn studied materi-als marketing, and after college beganworking in the construction side of thebusiness. In 1984 he became president ofAhearn Holtzman Construction, whoseclient list includes the Central Park Zoo,Nextel, the New York Times, IBM andBank of Boston.
“His generous donation will allow us toprovide hands-on, high-tech educationalexperience for our construction manage-ment students,” said Brenda Greenfield, as-sistant to the president.
New Leadership for ForestryFacultyDr. Chad P. Dawson has been appointedchair of the Faculty of Forest and Natural
Resources Man-agement.
Dr. DonaldW. Floyd hasbeen appointedto the new posi-tion of associatechair.
Dawson, aresident ofMexico, N.Y.,
joined the ESF faculty in 1989. His workfocuses on recreation resources manage-ment and wilderness management. Heteaches courses on wilderness and riverrecreation management, psychology ofleisure behavior, and commercial recreation.
Dawson received his bachelor’s degreefrom the University of Michigan, his mas-ter’s degree from Cornell University and hisdoctorate from ESF. He is a member of the
Society of American Foresters and associ-ate editor of the International Journal ofWilderness.
Floyd, who has been on the faculty atESF since 1993, is a specialist in the area ofpublic policy in forest and natural resources management. He teaches courses in ad-vanced natural resources and environmentalpolicy.
Floyd earned his bachelor’s degree fromHumboldt State University, his master’s de-gree from the University of Wisconsin andhis doctorate from the University of Ari-zona. He was elected a fellow of the Soci-ety of American Foresters in 1999.
International Paper EndowsMinority Scholarship Fund
A gift to the college from InternationalPaper will bring new opportunities for tal-ented minority students who pursue stud-ies in forestry and related fields.
The minority scholarship fund, initiatedby IP in 1998 as part of the company’s100th anniversary celebration, has grown to$80,000 through annual gifts of $20,000over four years.
The company has expanded the termsof the gift to provide full tuition to a student studying in the Faculty of Forestand Natural Resources Management, Con-struction Management and Wood ProductsEngineering, or Environmental and ForestBiology. In addition, the scholarship willprovide students with opportunities forsummer internships with InternationalPaper, as well as a chance to pursue employment with IP after graduation.
The gift is funded by InternationalPaper’s New York State Managers Council, which is made up of the managers of thecompany’s facilities throughout New York. The members make contributions fromtheir individual budgets. InternationalPaper maintains about a dozen facilities inNew York. Throughout the United States, the company employs hundreds of forestersto manage more than 10 million acres.

Sarah Wiles:It Really Works
Sarah Wiles ’83 has fond memories ofher experiences at ESF’s Cranberry LakeBiological Station.
After earning both her bachelor’s degreeand her Ph.D. from ESF, Wiles looked fora way to give something back to the college, and specifically to its satellite campus on theshore of idyllic Cranberry Lake.
Wiles was aware of the college’s effort tomake it easier for benefactors to make a do-nation to ESF, using the World Wide Webas a tool. “I thought, ‘I’ll just see if this on-line donating really works,’” she said. “Ifound out it does and it’s really neat.”
Wiles made the first such gift to theESF College Foundation, Inc.The programallowed her to divide her gift as she chose:part to the general foundation fund, part tothe bio station, part to an entrepreneurshipprogram that will teach students how to usetheir academic success in the real world.
Her experience with her family’s com-pany, Mid-Lakes Navigation, prompted herinterest in the entrepreneurship program.
“It’s not because our business has any-thing to do with forestry, but because ourfamily business started small and my fatherwas a real-life entrepreneur,” she said.
Anyone wishing to make an online giftto ESF can visit the development websiteat www.esf.edu/development/ and click onthe “make a gift” button.

Allen Naples:A Great Opportunity
When Allen Naples looked for a pro-gram to be the recipient of a gift from hisemployer, ESF’s Stalking Science Educa-tion in the Adirondacks was “the perfectfit.”
HSBC Bank USA, which Naples servesas president of the Central/Capital Region, made a gift of $13,500 to provide computerequipment, stipends to fund senior associ-ate teachers, and design and printing ofmodule booklets and fungi field guides.
“The bank has always been a very strongcorporate citizen supporting as many of thenot-for-profit organizations, both statewideand regionally, as we could,” Naples said.“Stalking Science is a fantastic program.”
Much of HSBC’s generosity is directedtoward organizations that are involved ineducation or the protection and improve-ment of the environment. Stalking Sciencedoes both. Operating under the wing of theRoosevelt Wild Life Station, the programtakes science teachers into the Adirondacksfor five days so they can use natural inter-pretation to enrich their teaching.
“It’s just a great opportunity for HSBCto support this kind of effort,” Naples said.“This is something I would look forward tosupporting over the long term.”

Sasha Blount:So Many Choices
As the end of her high school career ap-proached, Sasha Blount faced a decision.
“I could pursue a career in the culinary artsor I could save the world,” said the ESF freshman.
Luckily for ESF, a two-year stint as an in-tern with The Nature Conservancy in Manhat-tan and a favorite high school science teacherhelped tip the balance for Blount toward a ca-reer in the environmental sciences.
Blount’s contacts with admissions coun-selors, faculty, and students reinforced her posi-tive image of the college. “They were wonderful. And, ESF is very well known and focused on somany environmental issues,” she said.
A campus visit clinched her decision tocome to ESF. “It was important for me to seethat my mom was comfortable, too, because I’man only child.”
Scholarship assistance also was a key con-cern. “We’re not the richest family—we’re notthe poorest. We’re middle class.”Without schol-arships, Blount would have had to take out “lotsof loans.”
“The scholarships took a lot of stress off andallowed me to go to a good school at the sametime,” she said.
Blount’s interests continue to be varied —she loves her environmental processes class withProfessor Robert Malmsheimer but also is in-terested in environmental communications, pol-icy and management, and environmental justice.
Wherever her final career choice leads, shesays she’d like to stay in an urban area. “I wantto work to correct problems ‘close to home,’” shesays, “problems I’m familiar with.”

Charles Hall:Teaching Comes First
Charles A. Hall has garnered manyaccolades in his 30 years as a systems ecol-ogist. But the honor he treasures most, hesaid, is the one he received from the ESFCollege Foundation, Inc.: the third annualFoundation Award for exceptional achieve-ment in teaching.
“It means the most to me because for meteaching has always come first and becausein my previous position at an Ivy Leagueuniversity I was told four times by mychairman that I ‘spent too much time withmy students,’” Hall told an audience of ESFcolleagues the day he received the award.
Hall has been a member of the ESFFaculty of Environmental and Forest Biol-ogy since 1987. His spirited lectures and thepassion he holds for his subject have madehim a favorite with students.
The foundation’s recognition awardcame with a $1,000 grant to be used forprofessional purposes. Hall used it to payfor the taping of presentations in his GlobalEnvironment and the Evolution of HumanSociety courses. His goals are to continueraising funds for the project and get the ma-terial on the World Wide Web so highschool students and other users can have ac-cess to the information.
“The award was essential to the projectand it led to more funding,” Hall said. “Itwas superb seed money.”

Eric Greenfield:It’s Why I Came To ESF
Time, said Eric J. Greenfield, is a preciouscommodity.
“The Farnsworth Fellowship has givenme time: time to reflect, time to focus onmy research,” he said.
Without the fellowship, which he wasselected to receive in the spring, Greenfieldsaid, “I wouldn’t be able to focus on mystudies full time.”
In addition to working on his disserta-tion, Greenfield is a visiting instructor atESF and a member of several campuscommittees and organizations including theEcological-Economics Group and the So-ciety of American Foresters.
He is used to being busy. Before return-ing to graduate school, Greenfield served asa village trustee and as mayor of Delhi, N.Y.He also was executive director of the Coali-tion of Watershed Towns, and previouslyworked as an instructor at SUNY-Delhi.
After completing his doctorate, Green-field plans to continue teaching on the col-lege level. “It’s why I came to ESF,” he said.“A degree in forest and natural resourcesmanagement is incredibly well-rounded interms of problem solving and learningabout resources. It’s broadened my horizonsand will help me be a better educator.”

Leo Tidd:It’s Made A Difference
Although sophomore Leo Tidd wouldlike to attend law school, he’s not sure whatcareer path he’ll eventually pursue.
“I’m trying to get as much as I can outof ESF and keep my options open,” he said.
Several “really good” science teachers inhigh school helped turn Tidd on to a col-lege major in the sciences. When he learnedabout ESF from a friend’s mother, he said,“This is really cool, I’d like to do this verymuch.”
So far, Tidd’s experience at ESF hasborne out that initial impression. “I’ve hadsome really, really good professors,” he said.“They’re into what they’re doing and theirenthusiasm absolutely captures the students’interest.” One of his favorite classes so faris Nature and Popular Culture taught byDr. Mark Meisner.
Tidd said he’s been fortunate to receivetwo awards from the ESF College Founda-tion. This year, he qualified for a Founda-tion Award; last year he received the HirschScholarship.
“It’s made a huge difference to be able togo to school here,” said Tidd, “especially lastyear in SU housing, every dollar helped.”

Edward Audi:A Shining Star
A wood products lab in the renovatedHugh P. Baker Laboratory will bear thename of Stickley Furniture, thanks to a$25,000 gift from the Central New York-based company.
Edward Audi, operations manager forthe family-owned company, said Stickleyemployees often turn to ESF’s wood prod-ucts experts for advice on technical issues, particularly those involving the kiln-driedlumber the company uses to produce finefurniture.
“ESF is, in our opinion, a shining starin our own community and one that hasbeen very helpful to us and to anyone whoworks with wood products,” Audi said.
His family has owned the company, which was founded in 1900, since 1974.L. J. G. Stickley, Inc. employs 1,250 peopleat its plant in Manlius, N.Y., just a fewmiles from Syracuse.
“We hope this gift provides studentswith the most up-to-date tools they need,”Audi said. “Baker has been due for renova-tion and we are delighted to see it happening.”

Dr. Donald J. Leopold
Dr. Donald J. Leopold’s research takes him from forests to urbancenters to wetlands and to scrub patches of land under utility poles. The ecologist wants to learn more about the many and varied speciesboth locally and regionally, and the natural communities in whichthey occur.
“All species likely have a unique role,” he said. “We just don’t al-ways know what it is.”
Leopold points to recent discoveries about the Pacific yew host-ing a specific anti-cancer compound. “Years ago it was cut down asa weed, now it is protected,” Leopold said.
Preserving and promoting biodiversity are important on a host oflevels, from species’ benefits to society to the aesthetic — life isricher, more textured, more colorful.
“What controls patterns of biodiversity? Why are there manyspecies in some places but so few in others?” he said. Similarly, someplants are rare over large areas, but are abundant in small patches.
Research suggests that the more species present the more resilientan ecosystem is, and the better able it is to recover after disturbance.Understanding the role biodiversity plays in making ecosystems re-silient is key to helping restore areas damaged by humans.
“Most institutions study ecology for the sake of basic science, butdoing so doesn’t often increase species of concern, restore degradedhabitats, or contribute to other activities that improve the world. AtESF, we seek ways to substantially enhance the environment and society.”
