WELCOME TO 2020

Welcome to the first Newsletter for 2020 and especially to all the new students, parents and carers. We are very proud of the distinguished history of our school and our record of excellence and innovation, and we hope you enjoy being part of this vibrant, caring and diverse community of learners. Our goal at Hobart College is for all students to complete the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) and to prepare them for successful participation in further studies or employment. We are also committed to providing students with a holistic education that enables them to become healthy, connected and responsible members of the community.

Wellbeing is one of our key school improvement priorities and the staff started the year off with a professional learning session led by Dr Craig Hassed OAM, from Monash University (pictured below).

A leading expert on mindfulness and the connection to better learning and mental health, Dr Hassed facilitated a discussion with staff on the development of strong relationships, the negative impact of technology on wellbeing and the importance of limiting distractions to learning. This session informed our mobile phone policy which will be discussed at the first College Association meeting later this month.

Once again, Hobart College students continued to achieve outstanding academic and vocational results in 2019, and we are currently preparing for our annual Awards Evening where all student achievements from last year will be recognised. Watch out for more about the Award recipients in the next Newsletter in May!

2020 is shaping up to be another productive year for the College with some exciting initiatives taking place. We are continuing to work with our associated high schools to ensure there are greater pathway opportunities for all students to continue their education across the southern region. We are looking forward to the opening of the College musical production, Sweet Charity, in the newly refurbished theatre, and seeing the benefits of new facilities in the revamped C Block Design Studio on our expanded technology learning programs. We will keep you updated on these and other stories through our regular Term Newsletters.

I hope to see as many of you as possible at our first Meet the Home Group Teacher Evening on Tuesday 17 March and please do not hesitate to contact me on 6220 3133 or email [email protected] if you have any concerns. You are also welcome to make an appointment for a tour of the college and to see firsthand the high quality programs we have on offer.

We congratulate Rosemary Beswick, Science Teacher, who recently received a University of Tasmania Supervising Teacher of the Year Award for 2019 which recognises the critical role that schools and supervising teachers play in the development of pre-service teachers.

Rosemary was nominated for her ability to immerse pre-service teachers in

all aspects of teaching life other than just those attached with the subject area. Her friendly manner, meticulous class preparation, calm and nurturing personality and clear modelling of building strong relationships with students and their parents/carers were aspects of Rosemary’s skillset that were particularly noteworthy in Rosemary’s nomination.

Regular and punctual attendance is essential if you are to achieve successful outcomes. It is expected once you are in the workforce and you need to be preparing for this during your time at College.

If you are too ill to come to classes: Your parent/carer should telephone the College Office on 6220 3133. If you live independently (or are over the age of 18), you should contact the College Office yourself, just as you would be expected to telephone your employer if you were unable to attend work. The notified/explained absence will be recorded on our computerised attendance system.

SMS alerts are forwarded to parents/carers indicating students’ absences from class at 9.30am and 1.30pm each day. However, it is not an authorised absence unless it is one of the categories listed by the Department of Education. Ongoing absence due to illness requires evidence from a medical practitioner for the absence to be authorised.

On your return: If you or your parent/carer did not contact the College Office on the day of your absence then a medical certificate and/or note should be given to the office or mailed directly so that our records register a “notified/explained” absence. If you do not telephone or provide a written note, your absence will be recorded as “unexplained”.

It is also your responsibility to identify and catch up on all work missed during the period of your absence. Discuss your work with your subject teachers and Home Group teacher as soon as possible on your return. They will discuss with you any attendance concerns they have and will contact your parents/carers if problems persist. Attendance in class is crucial for success at College.

ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS

Student Services is located in A Block on the level above the College Office. Specialist staff are on hand everyday to provide students with assistance and advice on a range of issues, including course information or changes, special provisions for exams (see information on opposite page), post-college pathways, career counselling, personal or learning difficulties, Youth Allowance, Centrelink or housing issues.

Course changes will only be actioned after discussion with course counsellors, subject teachers and the relevant ‘purple’ course change form taken to parents/carers for discussion and sign off. At all times these changes should ensure that future pathway opportunities are not compromised. This includes the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) and university entrance requirements.

Please note that researching the pre-requisites required for mainland university courses and programs is the responsibility of the student alongside their parents/carers.

SPECIAL PROVISIONS FOR TASC EXAMINATIONSThe Office of Tasmanian Assessment, Standards & Certification (TASC) provides for special assessment arrangements to be made for students who, because of a diagnosed disability, are unable to be assessed in the same way as other students.

Provisions can be applied for in the case of significant health impairment or physical disability, a learning disability (e.g. dyslexia), a hearing or vision impairment, or a diagnosed/significant mental health disorder.

Special provisions may include additional time to complete examinations, use of a word processor for severe handwriting difficulties, special seating arrangements or the use of a smaller room, permission to take medication or food/drink into the exam (e.g. if diabetic), a reader or scribe, and advice to markers to ignore poor spelling, grammar or handwriting.

For those wishing to apply, please ensure contact is made with one of the College psychologists (Jenni Bailey, Monday to Thursday, or Denika Classen, Tuesday and Wednesday) on 0436 808 082, 6220 3106 or 6220 3133 as soon as possible, and definitely before the end of the first term. Applications to TASC close on 29 May. One of the College psychologists will be available at the upcoming Meet the Home Group Teacher Evening on 17 March for general information and to organise an appointment for later in Term 1/early Term 2.

PLAYGROUP 2020

A group of happy and enthusiastic students have been cast for this year’s musical production Sweet Charity. Directed by well-known local actor and director, Jeff Michel, with music direction by our talented teacher musician, Simon Cawthorn, Sweet Charity will bring together songs to sing along with, dancing to amaze and a musical score that will make you believe that love might be possible.

On Friday 21 February the cast read through the script for the first time. The levels of engagement and energy in this first read-through indicated that this will be another production of a very high standard. And it will be the first to be performed in our fantastic newly-renovated Theatre!

Rehearsals are taking place on Monday and Friday afternoons between 2.30 and 5.00pm.

Our Opening Gala Night is on 21 May, with a Matinee Performance for our Associated High Schools on 20 May and our own Home Groups on 27 May.

Art Exhibition 2019 The 2019 Student Art Exhibition was officially opened on 1 November and was another huge success. 189 pre-tertiary Art students exhibited their assessment displays (of which 17 were awarded EAs!), with an additional 180 student artists also displaying their work.

Every year the Art Exhibition celebrates the amalgamation of a range of areas in the college as they showcase their skills. Attendees were treated to background musical entertainment by a quartet of our music students playing jazz, as well as delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by our VET Kitchen Operations students and served by the VET Hospitality students.

The exhibition was opened by Patrick Hall, a local contemporary artist of international acclaim. Ten of the exhibiting students had their work selected for the 2019

Art Rage exhibition which was the biggest number of students ever chosen. The artwork of these students is displayed on this page below. Well done to all involved!

VISUAL ARTS

Hobart College Media Production students were again successful in the MyState Student Film Festival Awards, judged in December last year. There were hundreds of films entered by thousands of students in 21 categories. Films are created entirely by students. The theme or feature object for 2019 was a key which left a wide range of possible interpretations.

Thirteen HoCo students entered the competition with Amara Gantz winning both the ‘Best Film – Post Year 10’ and ‘Best Animation’ Awards for Feel the Music. Layne Kullrich who starred in Kaani Booth’s Cute Girl won the ‘Most Engaging Talent – Post Year 10’ Award. The films are available for viewing on https://www.mystatefilmfestival.com.au/films

The HoCo accolades continue with Amara Gantz securing an amazing opportunity to undertake a six month placement with Wooden Boy Productions in Portland, USA. Amara will be working on Guillermo del Toro’s stop motion production of a new feature film version of Pinocchio. Great talent gets recognised!

What’s New Around the Campus?New Library Shelving!Libraries are usually quiet spaces where students and teachers can study and read in peace. But, the new year at the Hobart College Library has started with a bang and a clatter! The teacher librarians have been busy taking apart the old metal shelving bays and replacing them with lighter, contemporary-looking and more accessible ones.

In the meantime, please pardon the mess as we continue to deliver all the usual library services such as lending laptops, providing student ID cards, issuing textbooks, offering library orientation, printing and photocopying assistance, research help and resetting student passwords. New couches, more student artwork and revamped study areas are part of the plans for an overall makeover for your Library this year, and stay tuned for a cosy new look for the balcony area!

BUSHFIRE RESPONSE PLAN FOR HOBART COLLEGE Due to improved forecasting of bushfires, if a rating becomes severe, the College will close the day/s before. Any closure of the College will be advertised via the media to ensure students/staff do not attend College when the bushfire risk has a ‘severe’ rating.

Evacuation of Hobart College due to immediate threat of bushfire will be a last resort. Our evacuation plan is to assemble all students/staff on the grassed area between D and F Blocks. During the next few weeks the College will perform an evacuation drill.

In the event of an evacuation, the College will keep in contact with the Tasmanian Fire Service who have identified two nearby safer places depending on which direction the fire is coming from: the Olinda Grove Sports Ground (UTAS soccer grounds) and the Mount Nelson Oval, also on Olinda Grove, south of the College. All Hobart College students/staff will walk or use private cars to get to the nearby safer place as directed by the Tasmanian Fire Service until advised it is safe to leave. Staff/students who have issues with mobility will be transported by College buses.

Any queries should be directed to Felix Goward, Assistant Principal, at the College on 6220 3133.

Summer School ExperienceDuring summer, Alexi Bancal, Year 12, participated in the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture’s (TIA) ‘Feed your Mind, Feed the World’ camp. Alexi wanted to gain insight into what an agricultural science pathway might look like, as well as learn about the technology that is shaping the agriculture industry.

The group visited a number of farms including Costa’s Berry Farm, a robotic dairy, Premium Fresh’s processing facility, and the TIA Research Farm.

“It was great seeing the technology that farmers use to be more efficient in their field, like robotics and electronic tagging systems, and how they manage the micro climate around their crops,” said Alexi. “There is so much more to farming than just growing a crop or getting an animal ready for market.”

This was a great way of seeing first-hand the science behind some of Tasmania’s agricultural businesses, and a brilliant way to learn about exciting career opportunities on offer in Tasmania.

Congratulations to Ella Lord, Seb Viner and Tad Willmott for their excellent results in the 2019 Science Olympiad exams. Ella and Seb received High Distinctions in Biology and Earth & Environmental Science, and Distinctions in Chemistry. Seb also got High Distinctions in the Physics Olympiad exams. Tad Willmott received a Distinction in the Earth & Environmental Science exam.

Each Olympiad exam was over two hours long, including multiple choice questions as well as extended answer type questions, so it was very impressive that these students did three to four exams each! Well done!L- R: Ella Lord, Seb Viner and Tad Willmott proudly displaying their raft

of certificates

Over summer, Seb Viner attended the Physics Olympiad Summer School. Originally planned to be at ANU in Canberra, it was moved to Parramatta, Sydney due to concerns about the bushfires. 31 Year 10 and 11 students

from around Australia were selected to participate, based on their performance in the Australian Science Olympiad Exams held in August last year.

Students covered the equivalent content of a first-year university Physics course including mechanics, thermodynamics, waves and oscillations, quantum mechanics, fluid/plasma dynamics, electrical circuits, electromagnetic fields, and geometric and physical optics. They also did daily experiments and write-ups which helped them to develop time management skills. At the end of the program there was a 3 hour practical exam followed by a 5 hour theory exam. Although mentally arduous it was a worthwhile and enriching experience. Seb will find out very soon if they are on the Australian team to head to Taipei in May for the Asian Physics Olympiad.
