Domaine Simha

OverviewAvant-garde,fineTasmanianwine

Founded at the edge of the world, Domaine Simha brought new heights to Tasmania’s fine wine landscape. These wines are highly sought after by collectors and sommeliers in the world’s leading restaurants. Domaine Simha offers a powerful proposition of authenticity from some of the finest terroir in the world. Crafted by hand in micro batches, only a limited number of barrels of Domaine Simha are made. These artisan single vineyard wines are shaped ‘au naturel’ to reflect epic Tasmanian terroir. At the heart lies the pristine environment, sparkling air and 200 million-year-old-soil.

An avant-garde approach focuses on living wine relying on ancient knowledge and intuition. Methods embrace harvesting by lunar cycle on fruit and flower days, whole bunch wild fermentation with foot pigeage, maturation in custom oak demi-muid oak and clay amphorae with perfect natural balance. These are graceful styles with beautiful perfume, fine structure and superb ageing potential.

The house of Simha originates from Sanskrit for Lion. Domaine Simha wines take their names from historic royal titles like Rani, Rana and Raja.

Based in Tasmania’s Derwent Valley, Domaine Simha was established by expert winemaker Nav Singh and Louise Radman. Born in Delhi India, Nav Singh studied to master the craft of viticulture and oenology in Australia and honed his skills in the most prestigious French chateaux. He has been recognised with countless accolades and trophies, is a regular on the international wine show judging circuit and was been inducted as a Wine Australia future leader.

Louise Radman is a multi-award winning brand identity and experiential marketing consultant, international show judge, former wine journalist, author and head of purchasing for Hyatt hotels. She sits on the Brand Tasmania Council and national executive board of Sommeliers Australia.

We welcome you to visit us in Tasmania. The Domaine Simha wine cellar is located on the waterfront at Brooke Street Pier in Hobart.

Independent Schools Tasmania

OverviewIndependent Schools Tasmania (IST) represents and supports 32 independent schools throughout Tasmania.

Independent schools are a significant, large and growing component of the Australian schooling system. They have a reputation as providers of quality education and are recognised for their leadership and innovation in school education.

Independent schools demonstrate best practice, providing excellent outcomes for students and choice for families.

Survey research shows that the main driver of school choice is the desire of parents to match the school with the individual needs of the child and the values of the family.

Other reasons parents choose an independent school for their children include academic outcomes, particularly at Year 12, quality teaching, a supportive caring environment, the physical environment and facilities, the content of the curriculum, quality leadership and extra-curricular opportunities.

The independent school sector has considerable involvement in providing education opportunities for overseas students, mainly at the secondary level. More than 6 300 overseas students attended independent schools in Australia in 2015.

While the majority of Tasmania’s independent schools engage in partnerships with schools in other countries for student exchange and global collaboration, six independent schools in the cities of Hobart and Launceston attract overseas students as boarders in their secondary school cohorts.

The Tasmanian independent schools offer a number of advantages for overseas students in comparison to similar schools in Australian mainland cities, while providing the same quality education:

• Significantly lower tuition fees.

• Less disruption to study with smaller and safer city environments.

• Improved English language proficiency through smaller enrolments of overseas students.

• Diverse home countries encouraging multi-cultural student engagement.

• Easy access to world heritage areas and outdoor activities.

• Close links and pathways with the University of Tasmania.

Our founder rallied to have the laws changed to allow boutique distilleries to operate. Since then over 20 new distilleries have opened in Tasmania alone.

Bill Lark realised that everything you need for a world class whisky was in Tasmania – rich fields of barley, an abundance of wonderfully pure soft water, highland peat bogs and the perfect climate bring all the ingredients together in a marriage of science, art and passion.

Today Lark Distillery is one of Australia’s leading distilleries, producing high quality premium spirits using traditional time honoured spirits.

Lark Distillery now also owns the prestigious Overeem Whisky Distillery, a small boutique distillery which focuses only on single cask releases along with Forty Spotted Rare Tasmanian Gin.

Our saffron is produced without the use of chemicals and uses only organically certified fertilisers and bio-inoculants.

Approximately 220 000 flowers are hand-picked and processed to produce one kilogram of saffron. The correct amount of moisture is extracted during the dehydration process ensuring a moisture content of less than 12 per cent.

Tas-Saff saffron is free of any part of the flower besides the stigma and necessary part of the connecting pistil so as to keep the stigma whole. 100mg of Tas-Saff saffron is sufficient to colour, flavour and add aroma to a dish serving four to six people.

ISO 3632-2 testing carried out by the University of Tasmania has shown all Tas-Saff growers not only meet but far exceed all the requirements for an Extra Category One quality rating.

Unlike bulk saffron producers, we are able to pick and process the saffron flowers on the day of their emergence ensuring we meet the very best in quality standards.

Tasmanian Whisky Producers Association

OverviewTasmanian whisky has gained a recent global reputation as producing some of the best whiskies in the world. Tasmania is an island, it is Australia’s southern-most region, and it is renowned for clean water, natural beauty and the quality and diversity of its local food and beverages.

The Tasmanian whisky industry is relatively new, with the first legal modern-day distillery established in 1992 by Bill Lark. Today, the industry consists of more than 20 distilleries - 12 of these are producing high-quality Tasmanian whisky, and more producing products such as gin and vodka infused with elements of the local region.

Tasmanian whisky is recognised globally as a high-value, premium product. Production levels are considered quite low in comparison to other prestige markets. The Tasmanian industry produced in order of $AUD20 million of whisky in 2015 with most product sold domestically and small volumes exported by some producers (Lark Distillery, Hellyer’s Road Distillery, Sullivans Cove and Nant Distillery) to select international markets.

In the next three to five years, the Tasmanian whisky industry will grow. A number of the region’s distilleries have plans to treble production and the businesses understand the opportunity available within international markets. Tourism experiences of Tasmanian distilleries continues to expand and the industry has responded by creating opportunities for international visitors to meet distillers, visit distilleries, hear the story, learn the craft and to taste and purchase product as part of the experience.

Most of the bigger distilleries offer tours and tastings of their product. Visitors to Tasmania can take part in events such as Tasmanian Whisky Tours offering intimate in-distillery tours and experiences, and the Tasmanian Whisky Academy offers an Introduction to Distilling course for people wanting to learn the art of Tasmania’s hand-crafted whisky.

Tasmanian whiskies continue to be recognised on the world stage. In 2015, Sullivans Cove Distillery was recognised by the World Whisky Awards as the best craft distiller in the world, Nant Distillery received gold and silver for its single malt at the World Spirit Awards, Lark was named Best Australian Distiller and in 2016 Shene Estate claimed gold at the International Whisky Awards in Chicago and Redlands Distillery gained silver. Tasmanian whiskies are traditionally produced in a single-malt style, although there is artisanal variation and choice.

The industry’s economic value includes its contribution to employment, and the downstream benefits to tourism, suppliers and those that service the industry. Its export value is yet to be fully explored but includes limited export to markets such as China, India, the United States and Europe.

Tasmania’s premium whisky products are typically available in 500ml (and some 700ml) bottles and retail on average for around $AUD165/bottle, with some products available more cheaply, and rare releases between $AUD400-1 000 per bottle.

The whisky industry in Tasmania has reached a level of market maturity that indicates that it is ready for growth. Tasmania’s whisky producers invite you to visit Tasmania for a rich, personal and valuable experience of the Tasmanian distilling industry.
