68% of first-time, degree seeking students take at least one remedial course.

Remediation course success rates range from 52% in MAT 050 to 65% in ENG 032.

On average 57.4% of students who enrolled in a remedial course stayed in it and earned a C or higher.

While only 5.7% of remedial enrollment was delivered via distance education, the success rates for this delivery were significantly lower than face-to-face delivery.

Female students, students 15 – 19, and African-American students are more likely to take remedial courses than their respective counterparts

Some Lessons Learned from Remediation Pilots

Contextualization requires significant time and effort; however, a compelling case could be made for embedding ASA competencies into and across select curricula.

Workplace pilots must involve clear coordination and expectations among all stakeholders.

Accelerated delivery is more than just scheduling classes twice a week.

Curriculum and professional development are essential elements in revamping remedial education.

The role of case management is critical in remedial and developmental education.

Next Steps for Ivy Tech

Accelerated Remediation Study– Hypothesis: “There exists no difference in overall

student success and outcomes between 16-week and 8-week delivery of remedial courses.”

8-week ASA courses for Spring 2009 Encourage retesting upon completion of ENGL 031—
