On the following pages, we’ve assembled a listing of the restoration parts that were featured in the New Products Showcase at the 2014 SEMA Show, but “restoration” is now as much about rejuvenating a vehicle using modern underpinnings as it is about numbers-matching purity. In

fact, many of the industry leaders quoted in the commentaries included within this buyer’s guide cite “restomod” vehicles as the segment’s most significant. They also note that trucks have become a major force in the restoration category, and the limits of what qualifies for “classic” status are also being stretched. Read on for the full scoop!

I see a consistency over the last few years in the types of restorations, builds and modifications done to vehi-cles. The restomod and pro-touring sects are still popular,

with restification being a staple, and pur-ist restoration being a small percentage of the segment.

I am seeing a movement in the Ford and Mercury ranks to vehicles other than Mustangs. Galaxies, Falcons, Fairlanes and Torinos and their Mercury counterparts are popping up in numbers not seen in some time.

I believe that the more obscure vehicles are becoming more popular due to being more affordable. But more affordable doesn’t mean inexpensive to restore, as these vehicles have very few avenues for replacement parts. I think we should revisit the feasibility of needed products for these vehicles.

Technology has definitely changed the restoration market, leading to improvements in the quality of parts. But the greatest advancements are data enrichment and rapid prototyping. Data enrichment helps to provide hassle-free shopping, giving answers to questions such as what fits, what is and isn’t included and installation instructions or videos. And 3D printing and other rapid-prototyping resources should drive down tooling costs and help in product short runs.

It is a great time to be involved in the automotive restoration market.

The economy has still soft-ened our market. My cus-tomers are do-it-yourselfers and need discretionary dol-lars, which are far and few between. Many of them are

restoring trucks and old race cars because they’re more affordable, but we’ve become snobby about restored cars, VIN numbers, OEM rather than reproduction and what is being restored. How about the enthusiast who gets excited about an ’83 Honda or ’94 BMW 3 Series? We somehow disregard them even though they’re the future.

The greatest opportunities lie with our customers. We need to listen to them and find out what they want. Many of the bestselling items we stock are due to cus-tomer suggestions. We constantly hear from customers who are upgrading their electri-cal systems for both performance and secu-rity reasons, using modern applications on older cars.

The major hurdle we face is the govern-ment, which seems to think that it needs to micro-manage our lives and choices. It forces us to buy economical vehicles to lower gasoline usage, then turns around and raises taxes to pay for roads because we’re using less gas. They are force-feeding corn into our gasoline, which eats up gaskets and seals. Using corn in gas also raises the price of feed, resulting in higher food costs.

Musclecars of the late ’60s to early ’70s are still the hot-test vehicles. That was the end of an era where style and horsepower were combined. But people are always look-

ing for the next big thing. They want some-thing unique that stands out. One is what I call the “Scooby Do” market: Vans from the ’60s and ’70s have become very popular.

Many of the parts needed today are of more complex design. We utilize digitiz-ers, high-level CAD/CAM software, 3D printing of models and CNC machining. The cost of developing molds has increased tremendously, but the end product is better than it’s ever been.

Most of the A-list parts have already been made. With the cost of making parts going up, competition driving prices down and the market being speculative, you will see fewer replacement parts being made in the future.

My advice is to be involved in the hobby. Pay attention to what people want. Find a niche and service it.

The fastest-growing seg-ment of the restoration mar-ket is restomods. Restorers love the look of the old cars but often want more modern touches, such as disc brakes

and better sound systems. Technologies such as 3D printing have allowed manufacturers to make new products that may not have been feasible in the past and get them to market faster.

We see the largest growth in newer cars, like third- and fourth-generation Camaros. As our customers get younger, their defini-tions of classic cars change. These cars are also much more available and at much less cost than, say, a ’69 Camaro.

As has been the case for the last few years we are a graying industry. We need to find a way to get younger people involved in this great hobby.

Restomods and street machines are being built more than anything else. The number of custom cars or trucks at shows is ten times that of original resto-

rations, and trucks are currently driving our business.

Customers can now search the Internet for more tech information and really get informed before they buy or install an item. We do a lot of tech and how-to videos on products through our own YouTube chan-nel, and social media as a business tool has changed how customers communicate with us, allowing them to share their experiences with us about a product or a company. But social media changes so quickly that we’ve hired a fulltime firm to do nothing but handle our social and online ads.

The graying of our industry is a problem. I am 40, but I’m a very young guy in the industry. Getting more and more youth involved is the toughest thing we face. We need to be focusing on getting more college and high-school kids involved as techni-cians and fabrication guys as well as in the parts and administrative ends of our busi-ness. We’re also facing continued govern-ment and legislative problems, such as sales tax and health care for employees.

With ’69 Camaros and other classic musclecars get-ting harder to find and more expensive to purchase, many people are turning toward other vehicles. Some that

were previously deemed “too new” or “too oddball” are now getting the value and respect they deserve. Just as I now hear ’80s tunes on oldies radio stations, we see more contemporary cars become worthy of a restoration. That’s good for the industry, since more variety equals more parts and specialized items, and it’s fun to see classic Cadillacs, AMCs and Plymouths mixing it up with Mustangs and Chargers.

Companies that produce restoration products have done their homework and created databases that contain a wealth of part-number information. Companies can now tell customers very specific information about parts, and those with good databases can tell you the differences between the same models that were manufactured in different plants. You can find this info on their websites, and it can really save a lot of headaches.

I don’t see a lot of strict restorations that don’t include modifications these days. We’re seeing cars that can do much more than drag race in a straight line. Now that autocrossing is popular, suspensions and brakes have really become more sophisti-cated and efficient.

Cars are going back to basics. We went through a cycle where there were no door handles, no door locks. Now all of the stock stuff is going back on the car with

just subtle changes, and things are going toward a restomod look.

You may see some new technology trickle down to the aftermarket from OEs intro-ducing new cars, but technology can only go so far. It seems like everybody has already done everything you can possibly do to a car with regard to the current technology, and manufacturers have improved their parts.

On the downside, a lot of shops have closed due to the economy and because this industry demands a prospectus customer with the disposable income to actually build cars. Another major problem is age: The average age of my employees is 56. It seems that the younger generation is not that interested in building cars, and this industry does focus on having some type of artistic ability to do the job.

We also need to work on educating the public about how to choose a shop. About 60% of the cars in my shop come from other shops. Those customers are so dis-couraged that they’ll never build another vehicle. If shops don’t treat their customers right, more and more of them will shut down, diminishing the industry.
