Airlaid Made from: Fibers including rayon, polyester, cotton, polypropylene, wood pulp. • Description: Dry laid web forming process. Uses air to randomly lay fibers. • Attributes: Generally very absorbent, usually not much strength.

Lycra® (Latex-Free Elastic) Made from: Resins including polyurethane.

Meltblown Made from: Resins including polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, nylon. • Description: Extrusion of melted polymers to form fibers and webs. In this process, high-velocity hot air is used to pull and stretch the filaments, which are then collected on a vacuum drum. This is a self-bonding thermal bond. • Attributes: Finer fibers than spunbond, tend to be softer, weaker. More uniform web than spunbond, also more surface area (more absorbency).

Needlepunch (Felt) Made from: Fibers including rayon, polyester, cotton. • Description: Carded fibers. Bonding technique using Needled rolls—literally thousands of barbed needles used to entangle fibers. • Attributes: No chemical binders. Soft, drapable fabric. Good absorbency, strength and flexibility (fiber dependent).

Paper (tissue) Made from: Cellulose—i.e. wood pulp. • Description: Fibers are mixed with water and then laid down on a screen to form a web. The water is then removed and the cellulose fibers are attracted to each other as the web is dried. • Attributes: Many types of cellulose can be used—bamboo, cotton, straw, etc. Can be recycled easily.

SMS (Spunbond/Meltblown/Spunbond) Made from: Resins including polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, nylon. • Description: A layer of Meltblown is deposited onto a layer of spunbond; then a layer of spunbond is then deposited onto the meltblown. The sandwich is then thermally bonded. • Attributes: Stronger than meltblown with more opacity than spunbond. Often has a better feel than spunbond of similar weights.

Spunbond Made from: Resins including polypropylene, polyethylene, polyester, nylon. • Description: Extrusion of melted polymers to form fibers and webs. In this process, the air stream cools the filaments which are then stretched and deposited onto a belt to form a web. The web is then bonded thermally by a calendar roll. • Attributes: High tensile, high tear strength, low bulk, low cost.

Spunlace Made from: Fibers including rayon, polyester, cotton. • Description: Carded fibers. Bonding technique using high powered water jets to entangle fibers. • Attributes: No chemical binders. Soft, drapable fabric. Good absorbency, strength and flexibility (fiber dependent).

Wetlaid Made from: Fibers including rayon, polyester, cotton, polypropylene, wood pulp. • Description: Similar process to paper making but is usually followed by adhesive bonding. • Attributes: Significantly stronger than paper, quieter, softer and more drapable.

Cohesive Characteristics: Lightweight, latex-free crepe-like material that sticks to itself. It is absorbent, porous, elastic-like in its nature.

Cotton Characteristics: Absorbent, breathable, biodegradable, excellent wicking, wipe-dry performance, sterilizable by all industrial methods, low static potential, printable, dyeable, chemically modifiable, renewable resource.

Lycra • Chemical Name(s): Elastane (AKA Spandex) Characteristics: Can be stretched repeatedly and still recover to very near its original length and shape. Generally, can be stretched more than 500% without breaking. Stronger, more durable and higher retractive force than rubber.

Polypropylene/Polyethylene Characteristics: Able to give good bulk and cover. Abrasion resistant. Colorfast, quick drying, low static, and resistant to deterioration from chemicals, mildew, perspiration, rot and weather. Thermally bondable, stain and soil resistant, strong, sunlight resistant, dry hand—wicks body moisture from the skin. Very comfortable and lightweight.

Rayon • Chemical Name(s): Viscose (Regenerated Cellulose Fiber) Characteristics: Highly absorbent (2-3 times more than cotton). Soft and comfortable. From cellulose, has many of the qualities of cotton, a natural cellulose fiber. Rayon is strong, comes in a variety of qualities and weights, and can be made to resemble natural fabrics.
