REPLACEMENT OF DETERIORATED LANDWARD OUTFALLSAN CLEMENTE ISLAND, CA.

C&W Diving Services, Inc. (C&W) mobilized an LCM-8 outfitted with a Deep Air Fly-Away Dive System to San Clemente Island for the installation of an outfall system. C&W installed a 160-foot long HDPE surf-zone section and a 320-foot deep-water zone section. The surf-zone section was a single 4-inch inside and 8-inch HDPE. The annulus was grouted and anchored in place. The deep-water section consisted of eight 40-foot flanged sections. The deep-water outfall was anchored using concrete ballast weights. The operation was successfully completed with minimal impact to the environment.

LAKE MEAD INTAKE NO. 1 MODIFICATIONSBOULDER CITY, NV.

The contract required tie in of the existing water intake for the city of Las Vegas from 100' to 170' of water depth. The existing 12' diameter raw water intake was prepared to receive a 10' diameter tee section. A 12' diameter x 168' long mortar coated steel pipe section weighing 180 tons was constructed on shore and placed in the lake utilizing a critical lift plan involving two 300-ton cranes. The pipe was towed to deep water, where it was deployed utilizing a controlled descent plan developed by C&W and naval architects. The pipe was mated to a Carnegie joint section attached to the tee section in 100 ffw. The lower end of the pipe was set on a precast slab located at 170 ffw.

NIMBUS DAM RADIAL GATE REPAIRSRANCHO CORDOVA, CA. AMERICAN RIVER

C&W is replacing the radial gate lifting hardware and watertight seals on 18 tainter gates used to control water flow. Articulating submersible bulkheads composed of eleven caissons are first assembled and installed in order to dewater the 18 individual bays. The lifting hardware and old seals on the tainter gates are then removed and replaced. Additionally, C&W is installing ladders and handrails on the concrete platforms joining these bays. C&W is also assisting in the development of future bulkhead installation procedures.

SAN ONOFRE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATIONSAN ONOFRE, CA.

As the contract diving company for SONGS for the past 15 years, C&W has carried out numerous penetration dives requiring as much as 1500 ft. of penetration. C&W's dive crew, aboard C&W diving support vessels, has conducted underwater video inspections, cleaning operations and repair activities of the plant's reactor cooling intake pipe. In April 2006, C&W was approached by the SONGS decommissioning team to assist them in permanently plugging the Unit 1 intake and discharge conduits. Working in conjunction with SONGS personnel, C&W developed and engineered a method to remove piping obstruction and install a concrete plug at the offshore side of the plant gates. The plug will effectively block ocean water from entering the plant.
