OpenROAD delivers all the tools needed to create robust, data-driven applications. OpenROAD includes a component-based integrated development environment (IDE) delivering all the benefits associated with object-oriented development. Development Advances

OpenROAD 2006 creates a more productive environment for application developers. This environment reduces the learning curve of getting started with OpenROAD development. Experienced OpenROAD developers can use the “classic” OpenROAD. In addition, it includes an enhanced debugger to easily ensure the quality of OpenROAD applications.

Deployment Advances

OpenROAD allows programs written in Java or any .NET language to access the business logic executing in an OpenROAD Server. • Forms and reports — OpenROAD contains a rich, event-based, extendable GUI, drag-and-drop interfaces, and more. It also allows user-defined, external class, and database events. The report writer is repository-based, displays reports online, and in printable format.

• Workplace tools suite — The suite includes a debugger for interactive testing, a visual application server administrator for configuration, and an eClient packaging tool for web deployment. Extensive built-in tracing is available to assist in debugging application logic and locating application bottlenecks.

• Cross-platform programming and scripting language — OpenROAD includes a rich, highly productive, object-oriented DSL that supports agile development methodologies. This language is implemented in its entirety on all supported platforms in a high-performance virtual machine ensuring 100% application compatibility between platforms.

• Reusable application objects — Built-in application objects are stored in a shared object repository. OpenROAD also provides an intuitive object-oriented system class hierarchy for both GUI and non-GUI components with more than 100 classes.

• Application libraries — OpenROAD includes user-defined and predefined templates and specialized functions. These templates are reusable application components that can encapsulate classes, scripts, and menus.

• External interfaces — OpenROAD supports a wide range of external call interfaces. OpenROAD allows any 3GL procedure to be registered and called from OpenROAD applications.

External Class support enables OpenROAD to incorporate or drive ActiveX, COM or DCOM controls, and components including web browser, office, and reporting software. It can invoke and manage OS command scripts. The OpenROAD Server provides callable COM interfaces

that can be driven from the web, turnkey applications, Visual Basic, Java, and C# applications. OpenROAD applications can also be embedded in and invoked from a web browser. These features give OpenROAD applications exceptional performance, flexibility, and solid data integration.

Deployment Flexibility

Once developed, successful applications are usefully deployed for many years. OpenROAD offers a set of highly flexible deployment options. These dramatically improve the productivity of IT staff and the usefulness of the applications created. OpenROAD delivers this flexibility with multiple runtime environments. The presentation layer of an OpenROAD application can be run as a traditional, rich desktop application and as a browser plug-in for web-based deployment. Thin clients, including OpenROAD and non-OpenROAD environments, can access business, application,

and data access logic hosted in the OpenROAD server.

Flexible Application Deployment

OpenROAD application binaries can be deployed on any supported platform, including mobile devices, without alteration. Applications can be moved between Microsoft® Windows, Linux® and UNIX® environments without modifications. All interfaces are supported on Microsoft® Windows, Linux® and UNIX® as well.

• Middleware server — Application servers on Microsoft® Windows, Linux® and UNIX allow business components to be deployed server-side. These servers enable N-tiered application architectures while providing dynamic load

balancing, application state management, and database connection pooling. Client-side technology choices can be made independently, providing the flexibility to choose from a variety of options.

• Unmatched data access — Ingres, Oracle®, DB2®, Sybase®, Informix Dynamic Server, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and PostgreSQL can be used as both repository and deployment sources.

• OpenROAD also supports a wide variety of additional deployment data sources including mainframe files and databases, MAPI, WBEM, JMAPI, LDAP Series, CORBA, and OLE-DB data sources.

• Supported platforms include: Microsoft® Windows, Linux®, AIX®, HP-UX®, and Solaris®

OpenROAD – The Future

OpenROAD has an exciting future ahead. Numerous ISVs have adopted OpenROAD as their development platform recently and earlier this year, Ingres made OpenROAD available as an open source software offering. This brings the same enterprise strength to the open source development space that the Ingres database brings to the open source database arena. And Ingres will soon release the latest version of OpenROAD with Unicode support which will simplify the development of robust, internationalized applications that support multiple languages. This will enable business and ISVs to develop the next generation of applications geared for today’s global economy.
