The first people known to eat ground beef were the 13th century Mongol horsemen. Hamburger probably got its name in the mid-1600s when it became popular with local sailors in Hamburg, Germany. In America, the first Hamburg Steak appeared in 1834 at Delmonico's restaurant in New York.

The first hamburger served on a bun was introduced by Davis Fletcher at the 1904 World's Fair in St. Louis. This led to first fast-food hamburgers in 1921, made by White Castle, and then to McDonald's hamburgers in 1954.
