Somerset (LPD 25), the ninth amphibious transport dock built by Ingalls, returned to Avondale Friday flying three brooms signifying successful acceptance trials in the Gulf of Mexico.

After three days of rigorous at-sea testing, the U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) team gave the ship excellent scores.

“We have now completed successful sea trials on nine LPDs, and each ship continues to get better than the previous one. Our shipbuilders, and specifically the LPD 25 team, did an outstanding job in getting this ship prepared for this trial,” said Mike Duthu, LPD program director.

We will continue this trend on our two LPDs in Pascagoula, John P. Murtha (LPD 26) and Portland (LPD 27).”

During the acceptance trials in port and at sea, INSURV observed more than 200 test events demonstrated on the ship by Ingalls’ Test and Trials Team, including anchor handling, flight operations, steering, navigation, ballasting and de-ballasting and a full power demonstration.

“LPD 25 is a great ship, and she performed well for INSURV,” said Richard Schenk, vice president, Test and Trials. “Once again, our strong partnership with the Navy/SupShip team worked well

Somerset is named to honor the courage of the passengers and crew members of United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed on Sept. 11, 2001, near Shanksville in Somerset County, Pa. The ship is scheduled for delivery to the Navy in October and will be commissioned next year in Philadelphia.

“The sea trials went extremely well and the ship performed as expected,” said Wayne Davis, LPD 25 program manager. “We had a perfect score in three major ship categories with high scores in several other tests.”

Coming to a trailer near you in October!

Engagement

Survey 2013

Ingalls Shipbuilding is inviting its employees and their families to help celebrate the company’s 75th anniversary during Ingalls Shipbuilding Family Day Oct. 19.

“Our shipbuilders come to work every day with one goal in mind: to safely and efficiently build the great ships that defend our nation,” Ingalls Shipbuilding President Irwin F. Edenzon said. “Family

Day is an opportunity to say thank you to the families who support them as they do this important work.”

To show appreciation for our shipbuilders and their families, Ingalls Shipbuilding Family Day will be held at the Pascagoula facility Saturday, Oct. 19, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Festivities will take place under a huge tent located south of the ARAMARK Café and the Administration buildings.

Family Day has fun activities for the whole family and will include lunch, shipbuilding displays, giveaways, photo booths, snow cones, popcorn, a dunking booth and a Kid’s Zone with inflatable slides and bounce houses.

Shipbuilders and their families will be offered a shipyard tour and an opportunity to tour the large deck amphibious assault ship America (LHA 6).

One ticket and a company identification badge will allow an employee and up to six family members to enter. The tickets are free and available throughout the shipyard. See the list at right to locate a ticket provider near you.

For your safety and protection of company proprietary information, shipbuilders and family members attending the event are reminded of rules that must be obeyed while visiting the shipyard:• All visitors must be U.S. citizens.• Employees must present their badge and a signed ticket to enter.• No more than six guests may be allowed for each employee

presenting a ticket.• Open-toed shoes or heels are not allowed. • Skirts and dresses are discouraged.• Coolers will not be allowed. Soft drinks will be available on site.• Photography south of the fence is prohibited, and photography will

not be allowed during the yard or ship tours.• Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.• Children under 7 years old are not allowed aboard the ship.

Celebrate 75 Years at Ingalls Shipbuilding Family Day

The next employee engagement survey launches Oct. 2 and runs through Oct. 15. Look for it where you work and let your voice be heard by answering a few simple questions.

Huntington Ingalls Industries will launch the “Tougher Than Steel” advertising campaign, featuring Ingalls Shipbuilding employee William Coleman, on Wednesday, Oct. 2, with a full-page ad in The Mississippi Press, the Press-Register and the Sun Herald. Gulfport delivers DDG 1001 composite hangar

Special Delivery

Gulfport leadership, shipbuilders and U. S. Navy representatives were on hand in Bay 6 to witness as the Gulfport Composite Center of Excellence delivered the all-composite hangar for Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) to the U. S. Navy Sept. 18.

“The Gulfport team has successfully delivered its second all-composite hangar ahead of our schedule commitment made last year,” said Steve Sloan, DDG 1000 program manager. “Our craftsmen did an outstanding job with another unique product that only our facility can produce.”

The DDG 1001 hangar and the hangar delivered last year for Zumwalt (DDG 1000) are each 60-feet wide, 60-feet long, 25-feet tall and weigh nearly 200 tons. They are the largest composite helicopter hangars in the U.S. Navy.

“With completion of our second hangar, the Gulfport team can take satisfaction in the fact that they are personally responsible for building some of the largest and most complex carbon fiber structures in existence,” said Donny Dorsey, Gulfport site director.

U.S. Navy Cmdr. Stephen Blevins, DDG 1001 Program manager’s representative, said, “Delivery of the hangar is the result of a successful team effort between Ingalls and the Navy. The production of these composite components is extremely challenging, and a testament to the professionalism of the Ingalls workforce.”

John Fillmore, manager of the DDG deckhouse and hangar, noted the early delivery was significant because this hangar included additional scope.

“We made the requested changes in the Ingalls/Bath unit interface configuration, which will make it easier for BIW to incorporate the hangar into the hull,” Fillmore said. “I commend our production team, particularly, our skilled composite craftsmen, for their hard work and dedication. They continue to produce high-quality composite units at lower costs.”

Neil Adams, general superintendent, said the DDG 1001 hangar was constructed with care and significant cost savings in both the composite components and in outfitting.

Ingalls Shipbuilders at the Gulfport Composite Center of Excellence celebrate delivery of the all-composite hangar for Michael Monsoor (DDG 1001) Sept. 18.

Navy League establishes Washington Navy Yard Survivors Fund

The Navy League of the United States has established the Washington Navy Yard Survivors Fund to provide financial assistance to those families most affected by the tragic events at the Navy Yard on Sept. 16.

“We are going to do our best to help members of our extended Navy family through this difficult time,” said James H. Offutt, national president, Navy League.

All donations will be used to help the victims’ families and those injured in the attack. To find out how you can help, visit http://www.navyleague.org/.
