PALERMO HUB
The “Palermo Hub” project envisages electrified double-track connection of the City of Palermo
with the Punta Raisi “Falcone e Borsellino” international civil airport, to be constructed mainly
alongside existing electrified single-track sections, laying the track partially on the surface and

VARIANT SS24 “DEL MONGINEVRO” IN THE CESANA – CLAVIERE SECTION
Asbestos-bearing rock was encountered during excavation of the “Cesana” tunnel at the end of
2006. The Technical Variant Expert’s Report drawn up at the time introduced construction of the first
underground repository for special waste and adoption of a suite of experimental technologies nec-
essary to complete the works while, at the same time, safeguarding the health of workers and
residential receptors bordering on the areas of the site.
