The FMA Informative when meeting Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag found that Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag started his training with his father at the age of 6 years old. The training was very hard and brutal labored with sweat, blood and tears. When his father passed away, Grandmaster Magdaroag now understands why he was trained the way he was… it was in preparation for him to carry the torch and continue what he had meticulously started. Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag fully admits that the art of Aikido that his family teaches is not the stan-dard Aikido, though that is the very roots, but the art of Aikido that he teaches has been constantly updated with techniques that are modern and deals with the situations of today. Magdaroag Magdaraog Martial Arts System have a unique system that has been kept very secretly by my father the use of the Aikido/Aikijutsu principles and incorporated the Filipino arts of Arnis, Eskrima and Kali; or the Stick and Knife weapons. The Magdaraog Martial Arts System is a principle of martial discipline that only a few have survived the brutal training and only some can have the privilege to be trained one-on-one in the Zeta theory and principles that the late Reynaldo A. Magdaraog had developed. And myself as the son “Grandmaster Roy B Magdraog” have constantly worked to improve the zeta that my father trained me in, with the true meaning and theory prin-ciples of it. The Alpha-Omega and Alpha techniques have been added and improved upon with more powerful techniques. The Magdaraog Martial Arts System is a martial discipline that has been around for many years; a mar-tial art that has survived many trials, and this is not only concerned with the physical, mental and spiritual unity of each practitioners. The training is different, we train in a place that is available and the environmental matter whether rain or shines. Each of our practitioners will be trained for years; if they can survive the training which it must be a training of dedication, determination, and so on…

The Beginning

Magdaroag Martial Arts main art is Aikido which was practiced by Reynaldo “Rey” A. Magdaraog who was born in Le-gazpi City, Albay Province, Philip-pines. He learned the art of Aikido through the guidance of the book Zen Combat. As no other person could possibly teach him, (at that time there was no known Aikido dojo in the Philippines) the Master relied mostly on books, which he practiced to perfection. After years of hard training he was able to har-ness the power called Ki. From this discovery he

gathered some friends and started to share his knowledge of the power of Aikido. By this time he was not economically blessed to meet the demands of lesser-known Martial Arts. Following nature’s way he continued to defy the trials and tribulations confronting each moment. Destiny has its own way of getting things realized when the Master was able to land a teaching job at the Divine Word College of Legazpi City handling Practical Arts subjects. Even in his pro-fessional life, the Master has to

combine and introduce his knowl-edge in the Arts of Aikido to his students.

The Arnis in Magdaroag Martial Arts is not for Sports Arnis. In the Magdaroag art it is thought of as a form of discipline used if the need arises. An example that was told was that at one time a student of Magdaroag Martial Arts was chal-lenged, and was forced to use the Arnis that he was taught. At the time it was known as a “rumble in Bicol.” The challenge was for each person to choose a weapon, (not guns), In Magdaroag martial arts it is not allowed to participate in free fighting challenges, for the art is for self-defense, and physical and mental well being. Grandmaster Roy and his father realizing that in a confrontation things escalate and proceed to become out of propor-tion, visited the challengers home to see what the problem was. Upon conclusion of the talks and under-

standing what the situation was and that it would not escalate and it would not have rumors which would not escalate that would make it grow out of proportion consented to the match. The opponent brought a bolo and the student of Magda-roag brought an Arnis stick. The Magdaroag student was victorious, and the both Roy and his father analyzed the sequence of events of the fight and were satisfied that what their student used was very successful. To train in Magdaroag Arnis the steps of training that is followed are: 1. First is to learn the Aikido that is taught in Magdaroag martial arts with the standard weaponry. 2. Once the art of Magdaroag Aikido is learned and understood with the basic concepts of weap-

Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag

Grandmaster Roy Magda-roag started his training with his father at the age of 6 years old. The training was very hard and brutal labored with sweat, blood and tears. Training hours were not chosen. It was early morning and night, rain or shine. Roy started in weapons training in the art of Aikido, 1st weapon he trained with was a katana followed by bokken, jo and bo, arnis and knife, though some were taught in his later years in life. Roy was trained and treated

as a student not as a son, which was very hard for him. His father had great expecta-tions of him. Until this day Roy still trains, teaches and revises in the improvement in the art as he has done since he started his path to knowledge and understanding of Magda-roag martial art. But when his father passes

away, Roy now understands why he was trained the way he was… it was in preparation for him to carry the torch and continue what he had meticulously started. Grandmaster Roy Mag-daroag fully admits that the art of Aikido that his family teaches is not the standard Aikido, though that is the very roots, but the art of Aikido that he teaches has been constantly updated with tech-niques that are modern and deals with the situations of today.

Expanding the techniques, making them more realistic, his art is constantly being revised or updated with improvements. Adding Arnis one must realize that weapons were already being taught in Magdaroag mar-tial arts. It was in 1998 that com-menced the inter-twining of Mag-daroag Aikido and Arnis which father and son worked together and were brought to light at a demon-stration in Legaspi in 1999. Some of the other arts in the area could recognize some of the movements that were demonstrated; however they could not get the full under-standing of the concepts behind the movements. When Roy’s father passed away he realized that there was a need to improve and revise the art improving techniques, concepts, and philosophies.

ons, Grandmaster Roy then takes the student on a one on one instruc-tion to instill fully the concepts of Magdaroag Arnis. In this way Grandmaster Roy is sure if any questions that may arise during the teachings he can fully explain and demonstrate so the student under-stands.To Note: In Magdaroag Arnis the movements, footwork is 100% Aikido. In the beginning partners are used to develop the basic’s and concepts of the movements. Once the student has developed and un-derstands and develops the basics, automatically the techniques are transformed into a non-pattern movement. (Learning a routine set of patterns of movements in executing strikes and blocks is con-sidered just exercises).

Even though Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag has opened Magdaroag martial arts accepting students, few have come. A reason is that even the basic Aikido with the concepts that is taught in Magdaroag martial arts seems to be physically and mentally challenging, and Grandmaster Magdaroag will not change to a non-com-plicated teaching just to get students. He fully believes and wants quality in a student, not a quantity of students that are not proficient and lack full understanding. Grandmaster Magdaroag is working on a program to be used for one or two day or even a week long seminar, that will give the student a outline and a familiarization of the Magdaroag Martial Art. Grandmaster Roy Magdaroag is developing a program that is for a period of 3 months which is more in depth, which will teach a student the very basics and principles of his art, but actually it is a general overall concept of the art. This is for groups that wish to get an understanding of Magdaroag martial art.
