The FMA Informative was able to meet and talk with Grandmaster Leopoldo O. Alcatora and Master Jerson B. Monderondo of LSAI Combat Judo Variation Style. Grandmaster Alcatora commenced his training in 1962 with Grandmaster Benjamin Luna-Lema. Grandmaster Alcatora said some of the important things learned from Grandmaster Lima were the concepts and principles in defending one’s self against an opponent, whether with or against a baston, bolo, or knife. In talking to Master Jerson Monderondo who is a student of Grandmaster Alcatora he says that when commencing to teach a new student, he emphasizes discipline, to teach the principles and concepts of Light-ning Scientific Arnis. In learning it is also emphasized that one should not engage in a confrontation unless it is the last resort.

Grandmaster Leopoldo O. Alcatora

Grandmaster Leopoldo O. Alcatora commenced his training in 1962 with Grandmaster Benja-min Luna-Lema. Speaking about

Grandmaster Lima, Grandmaster Alcatora says that he was a dis-ciplined teacher and when giving you knowledge of his art expected the student to remember, train and commit to the art. Important things learned from Grandmaster Lima were the concepts and principles in defend-ing one’s self against an opponent, whether with or against a baston, bolo, or knife. Per Grandmaster Alcatora there are 42 Defenses that include Stick versus Stick Disarming, Emtpy-hand disarming versus stick, locks, holds and reverses. There are 13 strikes that teach the various targets and that there are 12 prescribed attack patterns that combine the 13 basic strikes taught in the “Manner of Strik-ing.” And says that Lightning Scientific Arnis is a system that revolves around the concept of Tercia Serrada Cadenilla y Espada

y Daga which is a method of inter-cepting and redirecting attacks and blind-siding the opponent by going to the off-side and blanketing him with a barrage of continuous strikes while the checking hand constantly pushes, presses and controls his opponent putting him in a constant state of imbalance. In advanced practice the empty had will be replace by a dagger to es-calate the technology eventually as the practitioner progresses through the discipline. The art has a wide variety of techniques ranging from Solo Baston, Double Baston, Baston Daga, Espada Y Daga, up to unarmed combat. It covers a wide range of skills for all fighting dis-tances. All-in-all, it is a complete fighting system. As Grandmaster Alcatora believes that really no other martial art is a match for Arnis overall.

Master Jerson B. Monderondo

In talking to Master Jerson Monderondo who is a student of Grandmaster Alcatora he says that when commencing to teach a new student, he emphasizes discipline, to teach the principles and con-cepts of Lightning Scientific Arnis. Master Jerson Monderondo spoke of Tercia which is a closing in to close-quarter combat. Integral to this is a coiled close quarter stance that allows evasion and gen-eration of a powerful strike even in close range and Serrada which is a fighting concept of intercepting the opponents attack and redirecting it off of the centerline while moving

Serrada may be done in various weapon combinations: Baston Serrada - One Stick Doble Baston Serrada - Two Sticks Baston Daga Serrada - Stick and Knife Espada Y Daga Serrada - Sword and Dagger Empty-Hand Serrada - Unarmed In learning it is also emphasized that one should not engage in a confrontation unless it is the last resort.
