DETAILS OF THE COMPETITION

In order to celebrate the many benefits of cycling, Evans Cycles are teaming up with Olympic cycling hero Sir Chris Hoy and inviting schools around the country to enter a cycling poetry competition.

Pupils will be encouraged to take part in classroom based cycling activities (see ‘Resource Pack’) to learn more about the benefits of cycling, culminating in the creation of either an individual or class poem about bikes, cycling or bike racing. The school will be asked to shortlist one poem to be submitted to Evans Cycles for the competition.

The winning school will be visited by Sir Chris Hoy who will help host a British Cycling HSBC Go-Ride cycling session as well as inspiring and entertaining pupils with stories from his cycling career.

Remember this is a great activity to plan for National Poetry Day, on Thursday 4th October. This year’s theme is ‘change’. How could riding your bike change you, change your school or even change the world?

WHO IS SIR CHRIS HOY? Sir Chris Hoy MBE is one of the most successful Olympic cyclists of all time, with six gold medals and one silver medal. He was born and raised in Edinburgh and started competing in various sports at the age of seven. He started cycle racing in BMX then transferred to track cycling, where he became a multiple World Champion and multiple Olympic Champion. He was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 2008 and received a Knighthood in the 2009 New Year Honours list.

Sir Chris retired from competitive cycling in 2013 but launched his own bike range, HOY bikes with Evans Cycles, and is author of illustrated children’s books ‘Flying Fergus’ in collaboration with Joanna Nadin and illustrator Claire Elsom.

ABOUT HOY BIKESThe HOY kids bike range, available exclusively at Evans Cycles, has been designed to offer the best possible riding experience and quality and with little riders’ needs in mind.

All of the latest bike models feature shorter cranks than most other brands to allow for a lower bottom bracket position to help increase stability, as well as aluminium forks and integrated headsets to ensure weight is kept to minimum and to keep the front end looking as clean as adult bikes.

Evans Cycles and HOY Bikes are the official bike partners for British Cycling’s HSBC UK’s Go-Ride programme.

ABOUT FLYING FERGUSFlying Fergus, published by Piccadilly Press in London, is an action-packed children’s book series of cycling adventures aimed at 5-8 year-olds and created by Sir Chris Hoy in collaboration with writer Joanna Nadin and illustrator Claire Elsom.

The books evolve around nine-year-old Fergus Hamilton and his friends and a parallel universe called Nevermore.

While, on the ground in Scotland, Fergus rides on his grandpa’s cycling team with great success, Fergus soon discovers that he can travel through time and space with his dog, Chimp, by pedalling his bike backwards, entering magical, and sometimes scary, places where adventure awaits and where he meets many amazing characters…

The latest addition to the series, book 9, ‘The Secret Cycle Scoop’, is out in October!
