On another dog list people were talking about the bene- fits of Diatomaceous Earth for dogs. So what the heck is that? you ask. Let me tell you…. Diatomaceous Earth or DE isn’t dirt, or even earth. It is ground up microscopic shells of tiny critters called diatoms (related to algae) that lived long ago in the oceans and lakes and died in groups so massive that they can, today be mined, milled and proc- essed for a variety of uses. If you were to poll dog breeders on what is their dog’s most disgusting habit, hands down it would be “poop eating” . We can all agree there is nothing more disgusting than seeing your dog eat poop! Pool Grade DE (for use in poolfilters) is toxic for animal andhuman consumption . FoodGrade DE is safe for animals andhumans to ingest. It’s a naturaland safe way to kill internalparasites without chemicals. Themicroscopic shell particles of DEare sharp enough to cut theparasites without harm to hu-mans and animals. When DEcomes in contact with externalparasites ( fleas, ticks, etc) andinsects (aphids, ants, etc), thesharp edges cut the waxy exo-skeleton while the powderyearth absorbs the body fluidscausing death from dehydra-tion.

The uses and benefits of DE foranimals and humans, are plenti-ful, too many for me to list here.Visit websites that sell DE formore detailed information, usesand benefits.

http://www.earthworkshealth.com/How-Diatomaceous-Earth-Works.php

Or simply Google“Diatomaceous Earth” for hoursworth of websites to read :-)

So, back to the poop eating….

After starting my dogs on the DE(and myself) I continued to visitthe Wolf Creek Ranch website,(one of the most informative

sites I found) finding out moreand more information with everyvisit. In the section that discussesCoccidia/Giardia I came acrossthis statement “ If your animal iseating stools, it will continue toreinfect itself. Stool eating is of-ten eliminated by feeding foodgrade diatomaceous earthdaily. Feed Food grade DE inyour animals daily food at dou-ble the recommended dailydose once a day for 30 days, then back off to the daily rec-ommended dose. “

As I read this I realized thatlately I had been picking upwhole stools instead of halfeaten ones! Just to make sure Iwasn’t dreaming this, I hid andpeeked out the window towatch when the dogs were putinto the potty yard ( you knowthis isn’t easy to do with Schnau-zers because they KNOW youare still there even if they can’tsee you!!) One by one theywould walk by a fresh stool, sniffand walk away!! EUREKA!! Afteryears of trying every productand suggestion, I finally foundwhat really works. I don’t knowhow or why, but it does.

Sad fact that anything aboutdog poop can make a grownwoman happy, but I’m now en-joying the kisses from mySchnauzers without the odor ofyard snacks!

HSUS stands for the “Humane”Society of the United States. It isa corporation in the UnitedStates that does not own orcontrol any animal shelters andit does not represent humanesocieties in the United States, other than itself.

While HSUS began an animalwelfare organization back in1954, its current focus is towardlegislation that severely im-pedes or eliminates domesticanimals and animal ownership.HSUS disguises its political cam-paigns as attacks against“puppy mills,” animal cruelty, and “hoarding.” HSUS claimsthat it only targets “puppy mill”breeders and not “ethical”breeders, but the definition of“ethical” provided by HSUSmakes breeding of animalsimpossible.

HSUS defines “animal cruelty” inthe broadest sense that essen-tially defines nearly *all* humancontact and control over ani-mals as cruel. HSUS has defined“hoarding” as a mental disor-der where a person owns morethan the “typical number” ofanimals and does not care forthem in the way HSUS thinksthey should. HSUS has furtherdescribed the “typical num-ber” of animals owned by thetypical animal owner as beingabout 2 and it provides defini-tions for “proper care” that un-reasonable in the broadestsense.

Additionally, HSUS recommends

and encourages unhealthytreatment of animals by pro-moting its vegan dog food(which is untested as beinghealthy) and by advocatingspaying and neutering, whichare medical procedures thatcarry long term health risks andprevent breeding of quality, healthy animals. Ironically, HSUSopposes animal research, butby placing its vegan dog foodin the stream of commercewithout testing the long-termsafety of its product for dogs(which are naturally meat eat-ers) on a small test population,HSUS is testing its vegan dogfood on the unsuspecting massconsumer population. So, HSUSis conducting animal researchon a large scale.

HSUS has also been involved incampaigns to take animalsaway from innocent people, itadvocated the killing of adopt-able puppies because theyonce belonged to MichaelVick, who later took a job withHSUS, and it regularly cam-paigns for donations to helpvictims of natural disasters, while offering no aid to thosevictims.

When HSUS “rescues” animals,it will only collect a few of thestranded animals for photoopportunities to show the cor-poration as a “rescue” organi-zation. HSUS typically sells thecute animals and disposed ofthe less marketable animals inarea animal that are usuallyburdened by the disaster them-selves. HSUS makes no attemptto reunite animals that it col-

HSUS Defined lects with the owners of theanimals and it usually discussesthe conditions of the animals as“deplorable”.

Recently, the HSUS heavilycampaigned for donationsafter the Haiti earthquake. Thecorporation solicited funds andsent a “team” of people toHaiti to “analyze and assess”the situation. Haiti is a finan-cially poor country with peoplewho cannot readily afford theluxury of “pets.” Most of thedogs in cats in Haiti function asscavenger animals, which arethe predecessors of modernpets. Scavengers perform afunction of consuming humanand animal waste and of killingand consuming vermin. Re-moving these free-roaminganimals from Haiti after a disas-ter would only add to the disas-ter.

HSUS should have studied thesefacts before wasting resourcesto “analyze and assess” thesituation overseas. HSUS re-turned about a month afterlanding in Haiti and broughtback four dogs. Two of thedogs “rescued” from Haiti origi-nated in the United States andaccompanied employees of acompany owned by HSUS whowere evacuating Haiti, butfailed to follow the proper pro-tocol for bringing their dogsback.
