Differentiated Instruction
Content Give a pre-test to determine knowledge base
Process Vary the types of learning activities
Product Allow for a variety of learning products
Menus A “menu” of activity choices that are all
related to the learning goals and objectives are compiled.
Students may choose from the menu what items they would like to carry out to learn the material.
Menus may be tiered according to ability levels. Math Menu (rational functions) Science Menu (Momentum and Collisions Menu.doc)
Tiered Activities
Provide a challenge to students of all
ability levels through tiers. Each tier provides different levels of
complexity. Chemical Bonds Table Atom Graphic Organizers
Orbital Studies
Short term (3-6 weeks) independent or group investigations.
Student’s choose the project type, design the plan, define the final product and negotiate the grading rubric with the teacher.
Students are usually required to present end result to class. “Let Me Introduce You” Orbital Study
Stations Different tasks carried out simultaneously. Students may skip stations if they know
the material. Some stations may be for advanced
students only. Students rotate through several stations
to master the content/skills related to the topic. Equations Triangle Congruency

Compacting
Curriculum compacting is a three-step process implemented by the teacher for one or more students who have mastered portions of the essential curriculum:
1) pre-assess to determine what a student knows about content/skills to be taught; 2) modify learning activities so that student receives
instruction only about what he/she does not already know 3) provide alternative learning activities that offer
acceleration of meaningful, challenging enrichment
Independent Study
Students select topic, set goals and criteria for work, negotiate evaluation plan with teachers and present results to appropriate audience.
Independent study provides total flexibility based on students readiness, interest, and learning profile. Compacting/Independent Study Lesson
