1. Adequate Food As Basic Need• 10% of the world’s population consumes 25%

more food than they need, while the poorest 10% consumes 30% less than they need

• At least 40% of Canadian children between 11-14 have at least 1 medical problem caused by malnutrition (not enough nutritional value from food consumed)

• As many as 1 500 000 children have across the country suffer from malnutrition problems related to poverty

2. Health as a Basic Need• Partly a matter of adequate food and proper

nutrition and partly a matter of correct sanitation and a disease minimized environment

• There is a direct correlation between life expectancy and nutritional requirements, as well as between life expectancy and literacy levels

• Relatively short life expectancies equates to higher Infant Mortality Rates – high IMRs are strong indicators of the quality of health within a nation

• Of the worlds literate, 69% female, 86% are male

• Illiteracy impairs the ability to improve food production, health care, population programs, etc.
