Student represents the society's investment for future. Their mental health and well-being are important not only in its own right but also as a factor contributing to the larger society's well-being. College students frequently have more complex problems today than they did over a decade ago. Common stressors in college include greater academic demands, being on your own on a new environment, changes in family relations, changes in social life, exposure to new ideas and temptations. Some of the salient problems specific to college students are time pressure, fear of failure, struggle to establish identity, pressure of academic excellence and tough competition. Emotional problems such as feel inferior to others, not able to think properly, worrying too much, feel life is not worth living. Academic stress is a mental distress which respect to some apprehended frustration associated with academic failure, apprehension of such failure or even an awareness of possibility of such failure (Gupta and Khan, 1987). Several authors have studied the academic stress of different age groups. Zeidner (1992) study reported that students appeared to be under high by pressure originating from course overloaded and academic evaluation procedures and least stressed by personal familiar and social factors. It depends upon the student how to handle academic pressure. It varies from a meritorious student to a commoner. The curricular should be so arranged that the students can have ample time for play with fun. Psychologist Dr. Sudha Bhogle also asserts that lack of peer network and social support, coupled with high parental expectations can cause suicidal tendencies, suicide is rarely impulsive. Meanwhile, engineering students claim that the syllabus does not stress them out. However, they eat up a lot of their study hours. "We do feel a little pressure, but it is not because of the curriculum. It's the tedium of writing out all our lab experiments twice that takes up a chunk of the week, so study days are reduced". For thousands of youngsters, crucial exams are nigh. Many say the pressure on students should be minimized, but should people just accept it as a fact of life, asks Mathew Syed. Is it any wonders that many students fail to perform, not because they lack ability, but because they lack ability, but because of unique pressure of the exam room the ticking clock on wall, invigilators pacing up and down, and the surreal sense that one's very future is in the balance? Removing pressure altogether from life is, in many ways, an impossible dream. When it comes to exams, the parallels are obvious. Many students are profoundly spooked by working up against a hard deadline in which case, diligently practicing essays or problems under time constraints, perhaps with a parent or friend acting as invalidator, would help dramatically. Even a huge exam is not as important as, say, a loving family, or good health. Are students today under more academic pressure than in past generations? While some students probably are working harder these days, "about 90% aren't under much pressure," says Laurence Steinberg, a professor of psychology at Philadelphia's Temple University and author of one of the most extensive nationwide survey sever done of U.S teens. Pressure is necessary and unavoidable concomitant of daily living necessary because without some stress we would be listless and apathetic creatures. A person's response towards pressure depends on whether an event is appraised as a challenge or a threat. Students have different expectations, goals, and values that they want to fulfill. It is important to the society that students should learn and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills that will in turn make them contribute positively to the development of the general economy of any nation.
